Volume One: Start With You

Marketing should be fun!

When you get up in the morning you should want to get to work with energy and enthusiasm…

Choosing a market starts with YOU doing what you enjoy, it starts with your passions and ends with

you inspiring your customers to be just as passionate.

That’s why I strongly encourage you to begin by looking at topics that you are interested in. I would

suggest that you begin by looking at general themes or categories. So, you need to identify broad

topics in which you have an interest before drilling down into specific niche markets.

One of the biggest mistakes I see beginner niche marketers, and indeed even seasoned niche

marketers, make is to create a portfolio of wide and diverse topics.

It's almost as if they have a collection of jigsaw puzzle pieces all from different boxes. There is

absolutely no way that those jigsaw pieces will ever fit together to form a single picture.

So, your very first and most important step is to decide what business you are going to be in.

Let me explain why this is so important …

If you have a collection of niche websites all focused on different topics without a common theme

then you are effectively running multiple businesses. Each of those niche businesses will need its

own promotional campaign, each will need its own auto responder, and each will need its own link

building campaign and so on.

However, if you build a number of niche websites around the common theme then everything can

be managed collectively. For example each of your websites can be an entry point where people can

subscribe to your general theme-based newsletter.

Furthermore, as you develop your own products you will have the ability to cross sell and upsell

those products to all your subscribers because all your products will fall within the same theme.

So, let's start by looking at your background…

Career Background Your career or job history can offer a rich seam of skills, knowledge and experience on which you can

build a successful online business.

Skills

Do you have any specific skills that you could pass on to others? Think about your job history

consider all the skills that you have developed and begin by listing everything that you are good at.

Knowledge

In what topics do you have an in-depth knowledge? Now consider all the technical knowledge and

information that you have learnt in the work environment. Take some time to list the topics where

you have sufficient knowledge to pass on to others.

Experience

What has your experience taught you? Consider all the things that you have learned through

experience, the little tips and techniques that you developed to overcome problems and to make

your job easier. Our experience is often much more valuable than our skills and knowledge because

it is personal to us. Wake a list of as many of those special tips and techniques as you can.

Education

In what subjects do you hold qualifications? Go through your education and training history and list

all those topics where you have achieved qualifications, review any certificate you may have and list

those qualifications.

Once you have completed the above lists review them, look at topics that you really enjoyed, I like

them and then transfer those topics to a shortlist of potential niche markets.

Free Time The vast majority of us spend as much of our free time as we can engaged in the things that we

really enjoy. And, as I said earlier, marketing should be fun so let's have a look at how you spend

your free time…

What do you do for FUN?

If you had unlimited free time what would you do? What are your favourite activities? List all those

fun activities, the things you really love to do.

Hobbies

What are your favourite hobbies and pastimes? What hobbies do you enjoy in the summer? What

about winter… are there different hobbies that you enjoy during the winter months? List all your

favourite hobbies.

Interests

Are you interested in anything specific? What books and magazines do you like to read? Compile a

list of topics that really interest you.

Sports

Do you participate in any sports? Do you prefer individual sports or are you a team player? Or do

you prefer to be a spectator? List all the sports that you enjoy either as a player or a spectator.

Memberships

Are you a member of any specialist associations, clubs or other interest groups? Do you attend

meetings with other enthusiasts and club members? List your memberships.

Collectibles

Are you a collector? I remember collecting cigarette cards, football programmes and badges when I

was a kid. In later life I collected antiques and first edition books. Make a list of the types of things

you collect.

Again, review your lists, highlight those things that enthuse you and add them to your shortlist of

topics.

Dreams Okay, we’ve looked at your career background, we have examined you hobbies and other interests

and it’s now time to shift our focus on the future by taking a look at your dreams and aspirations…

Bucket List

Have you seen a film called “The Bucket List”? It’s a comedy-drama starring Academy Award-

winners Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. The main plot follows two terminally ill men

(portrayed by Nicholson and Freeman) on their road trip with a wish list of things to do before they

"kick the bucket."

I believe everyone should have their own personal bucket list. So, what are the things that you

would love to do before you die?

Ambitions

Everyone has their own personal ambitions. Specific targets that you wish to achieve in your life and

career within specific timescales. Take some time to list your ambitions.

Goals

One of my favourite quotations is from Walt Hopkins who said “A goal is a dream taken seriously”.

While it’s great to have dreams and aspirations, they are meaningless unless they are translated into

actionable goals. What are your goals?

Heroes?

Who do you admire? Who are the experts and specialists that inspire you? Looking at our heroes can

offer a great insight into our passions and interest but from a different perspective. Compile a list of

the people who you really admire and be sure to note down their area of specialism.

Now, go through you lists, highlight those topics that stand out and add them to your shortlist of

potential niche topics.

Questions I believe we should question and challenge everything from time to time. The ability to challenge

and question is one of the key skills I look for in my business coach and in the people I work with.

While you can do this part of the exercise yourself, it can be more effective if you can find someone

else to ask the questions. This will give you the freedom to concentrate on the answers.

If you could do anything?

Consider what you would do if you had the time and resources to do anything at all. If there were no

financial or time constraints, on what specific activities would you spend your time?

What are your strongest beliefs?

Values include deeply held beliefs about what is right and wrong, good and bad, acceptable or

unacceptable conduct, and about what is worth wanting, working for and making an effort to keep

in life.

Think about your working environment, think about a time when you were totally motivated and put

yourself into that situation where you are totally motivated and ask: 'What is important in this

experience'?

List those things that are important and when you have completed your list, rank each item in order

of importance.

What motivates you?

Again, consider a time when you were totally motivated. Put yourself back into that situation and

describe what you can see, what you can hear and what you are feeling. Now list the contexts in

which you see, hear and feel the same.

What's got in your way?

What barriers and problems have prevented you from achieving success in the past? How did you

overcome those barriers and problems? List the contexts where you overcame any kind of adversity.

What makes you angry?

Considering what makes us angry is simply another way of identifying those things that we are truly

passionate about. List the things that hit your angry buttons.

What excites you?

Consider what activities excite you; what activities give you the greatest buzz? What gets your

adrenaline going? List the things that get you excited.

You should now have another set of lists. Review those lists and, again, highlight those things that

jump out at you in any way. Add the highlighted topics to your shortlist.

The Brain Dump Technique This technique is in two parts and it is most effective if you can do part one during the evening or

late afternoon.

It’s really easy.

All you need is your shortlist of niche ideas, a few sheets of blank paper, a notebook or a scrap pad

and a pen or a pencil.

Now find yourself somewhere quiet and comfortable to work, a place where you won’t be

distracted. You must switch off your telephone, your computer and your mobile phone!

If you don’t have a quiet place at home then try to find a quiet coffee shop. For real peace and quiet

I recommend you go to your local library.

Make yourself comfortable, set your paper out in front of you and quickly skim through your

shortlist of niche topic ideas.

Now, begin to write… just write the first thing that comes to mind… keep writing… don’t review what

you’ve written… just keep writing… that’s why it’s called a brain dump… the idea is to keep writing to

dump everything from your mind until there’s nothing left… when you don’t feel you have anything

else to write, just sit quietly with a clear mind… relax and enjoy the moment.

Okay, that’s part one completed.

Before you get to part two, you need to get a good night’s sleep. This will allow your subconscious to

work on all the information you have collected and analysed.

First thing in the morning, before you do anything else, grab another few sheets of blank paper and

something to write with and go through another brain dump… just write down whatever comes to

mind… keep writing… don’t read anything back… keep writing until you have nothing else to write…

then relax… sit quietly for a moment.

That’s it. All you need to do now is to review your morning’s writing. You will probably find that your

shortlist will be even shorter and you have much more clarity about the type of niche topics that

most interest you.

It get’s a lot easier from now…

The next part of the process is about researching the market and defining your target customer. You

should begin by reviewing the “Choosing A Market” mindmap and then use the “Volume Two

Mining Your Theme” workbook.
