Welcome to Lake View High School (LVHS). As the oldest high school in Illinois, we take pride in the traditions and history that echo loudly through our hallways. Yet, to foster a 21st century learning environment, we know that our bond with the past also gives rise to the future. Embodying this ideal is our nearly-completed $27 million renovation project. This undertaking has preserved our beautiful, 19th-century exterior architecture while modernizing interior areas such as the cafeteria, gymnasium and hallways, and added features like our new turf athletic field and Innovation Lab.
Beyond aesthetics, our creative and supportive environment provides a center of learning and personal growth for current and future Wildcats. My personal experiences as a CPS student in a diverse, high-performing neighborhood high school have shaped who I am today and drive me to challenge, support and inspire our students and staff.
As one of only eight Early College STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) High Schools in CPS, LVHS promotes deep STEM learning to develop critical thinking and disciplinary literacy. Whether a student enrolls in Honors, AP or dual-credit courses, competes on one of our 28 sports teams or joins one of our many clubs, our offerings appeal to the broad interests of our students, and ensure they are prepared for college and careers.
By fostering a sense of community, tradition and innovation, Lake View High School has helped to shape the lives of our graduates and the neighborhood around us for nearly 150 years. At LVHS, we are proud of our past, committed to our present and poised for our future. The choice is yours.

A Chicagoan and CPS graduate (Kenwood Academy class of ‘88), Paul Karafiol has devoted his 24-year career to educating and supporting CPS students. Perhaps foreshadowing his current role, Karafiol began his career as a student teacher in Lake View’s summer precalculus program. Over the years, his commitment as a classroom teacher has been matched by his administrative leadership -- taking on roles including department chair, curriculum coordinator, LSC representative and assistant principal. His CPS high school experience has included positions at Ogden International and Walter Payton College Prep, where he spent 15 years as a teacher and resident principal. A fluent French speaker, Karafiol channels his passion for language and world culture by leading student trips across the globe. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Harvard University and a Master’s degree in philosophy from the University of Chicago, where he also completed a year of law school before realizing his true passion is in educating young people. He is currently a doctoral student at UIC.

STEMOur state-of-the-art Innovation Lab fosters creativity and self-expression by combining advanced technology with traditional tools. It’s no surprise to see a drill press or a sewing machine sitting next to high-precision laser cutters and 3-D printers. In addition to after school programs, our Maker Space class provides juniors and seniors with hands-on, project-based learning that allows them to design, build and bring their imaginations to life.
From the moment they walk through our doors, LVHS students are immersed in a comprehensive, four-year education, where STEM learning is meaningfully infused into every course –– from IT Problem Solving, Robotics and Pre-Calculus to Film & Animation, Civics and English Literature.

Clubs provide students with an array of opportunities to pursue their passions and explore their curiosity. Members of the LVHS Innovation Academy work on interactive projects and participate in unique enrichment field trips that explore business, technology, economic and educational facilities. Recent trips have included visits to Google, 1871, Northwestern University and Microsoft.
Adventurous students with a passion for cultural discovery choose the LVHS Travelers’ Club. In recent years, students have visited Rome, Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, London and Greece. And in 2019, they’re heading to Japan!
The LVHS Student Council is the heart of school spirit, pride and community-building efforts. Representing every grade level, these student leaders plan monthly, school-wide assemblies and other social events.
Fostering critical thinking, speaking and listening skills in a competitive setting, our top-10 ranked Debate Team competes in tournaments throughout the city.
The mission of Junior Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (JROTC) is to motivate young people to be better citizens. We do this by instilling leadership skills, offering a rich learning environment, and by giving cadets the opportunities they need to realize their full potential.
