Meal and snack times are treated as a social occasion, withpractitioners sitting with the children in small groups. Eatingcorrectly is educational itself. Our chef provides very wellbalanced and nutritious meals changed weekly. You cancontribute and receive copies of the weekly menus whichintroduce the children to a variety of different flavours fromaround the world. All food intake is logged and displayed foryour convenience. We even provide recipes for our meals foryou to try at home. Breakfast, snacks, a freshly cooked twocourse lunch, tea and drinks are all included in our fees.

Meal times are are great opportunity to encourageindependence, promote confidence and practice self helpskills. Children help to lay the table and self select their ownmeals giving them choice and responsibility. Practitionerssupport positively along side encouraging the children to trynew foods and ensuring all meals are balanced.

Choochoos has a flexible daily routine which ensures all children receive a well balancedprogramme meeting all aspects of the Early Years Foundation Stage. Children are familiarwith using a time line to help them identify any routine changes and they know what is comingnext. Experiences and activities are planned for every individual child using both the insideand outdoor environment to challenge young minds and keep them stimulated. During asession children will have opportunities to develop skills in creativity, physically, have sensoryexperiences, participate in stories, music, ICT and develop interests across the breadth ofthe curriculum. Communication, physical and interaction skills are at the forefront of everychild’s learning practiced frequently with both a child’s peers and with adults.

Parents and practitioners working with young children are often puzzledby some of the actions children display.Have you ever given a present to a child and noticed they are moreinterested in the box rather than the toy?A schema is seen to be a pattern a child demonstrates through theiractions, language or play. While a child may play with a variety of toys, apattern may link these seemingly disassociated activities.Schemas indicate the child's focus in an activity.E.g. In the home corner at Choochoos we quite often see children fill up bags, put things intocupboards, dress up, load prams with dolls - the focus is enveloping - exploring 'inside'The key person during your home visit will be asking you ‘How does you child play?’ as byidentifying a child's schema we can plan their learning in ways that most interest them. There are several types of schema, and a child may fit into more than one schema. There aremany leaflets and further information available at Choochoos or on our website if required.

Choochoos uses the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) to plan and build on your child’sinterests. The document caters from birth to children attending the end of reception atschool. The EYFS document is a requirement from Ofsted and underpins all of our workingpractices displayed at Choochoos.

Learning and Development Requirements - The EYFS learning and developmentrequirements are divided in to two areas. Prime and Specific.

PRIME AREAS: • Communication and language • Physical development • Personal, social and emotional development The Prime areas are key to successful learning and development and children need to besufficient in these aspects before progressing into specific areas. Prime areas will beincluded in any planning and experiences you child may get involved with at Choochoos. Primeareas promote self esteem, confidence and health, proven to strengthen learning for thefuture.

SPECIFIC AREAS: • Literacy • Mathematics • Understanding the world • Expressive arts and design Specific areas are planned for at Choochoos once the Prime areas are embedded. Thelearning environment at Choochoos both indoors and out will reflect the Specific areas.Opportunities for your child to independently explore and discover resources are providedthroughout to meet all areas of the curriculum.Activities & experiences - differ according to children’s stages of development with playbased learning offered to build on previous interests. We consider each child’s increasingconcentration span and developing skills. Creativity is encouraged by providing differentactivities for the children to become involved in and ensure that these are rotated regularlyto maintain focus. Choochoos give children every opportunity to develop and experience thebest possible start to education thus making the transition from nursery to primary school asmooth one.Play - Play is how children explore and investigate the world, and gradually gain anunderstanding of it. Our priority is to make learning an enjoyable and stimulating experience,it is vital that practitioners ensure children receive as many chances to learn through play aspossible. Children are encouraged to be independent through initiating their own experiences.Children are frequently introduced to pre-writing skills, mathematical concepts and a widerange of physical and sensory activities. They are invited to bring in subject matter fromhome to encourage group discussion, language and literacy and help support weekly planning.
