We Remember You

Master, we know you will be leaving us; Your destiny calls you far away. Until that time you come again, we will not forget you; You are in our hearts and minds each day.

Chorus

We remember you in the bread we break. We remember you in the cup we share. You are always with us, as close as the air we breathe. Guiding us, supporting us everywhere. We

remember you in the words you spoke. We remember you in your kindly deeds. You are always near

us whenever we call on you; loving us, helping us in our needs. Master, we know that you will come again;

In this you have made a promise true. In preparation for that time you will come to claim us. We will faithfully remember you.

Maundy Thursday March 29, 2018 6:30 PM

Welcome to Worship

Holy Communion is sometimes referred to as "The Sacrament of

the Altar." The Old Testament service of the priest was done at an

altar in the temple at Jerusalem. When Jesus shed his blood and

gave up his body unto death, it was on the altar of the cross.

On this Maundy Thursday evening, we continue to focus on our

Lenten theme, "Jesus Christ Is Our Great High Priest," and as we

do, we meditate on the greatness of the new covenant he mediates

with God and sinners through his body and blood, given and shed on

the cross, and available to us in the sacrament.

The service begins this evening with Hymn #135, "The Death of

Jesus Christ, Our Lord," to remind us of these truths.

BELLS & WELCOME BY PASTOR

OPENING HYMN: #135 "The Death of Jesus Christ, Our Lord"

The death of Jesus Christ, our Lord,

We celebrate with one accord;

It is our comfort in distress,

Our heart's sweet joy and happiness.

He blotted out with his own blood

The judgment that against us stood;

He full atonement for us made,

And all our debt he fully paid.

That this forever true shall be

He gives a solemn guarantee;

In this his holy supper here

We taste his love, so sweet, so near.

His Word proclaims and we believe

That in this supper we receive

His very body, as he said,

His very blood for sinners shed.

Choir Song Lyrics...

"Communion Canon"

Your sacrifice has made me whole, healed my heart and touched my soul.

Humbly I take this bread, this wine; Your blood, Your body,

Your love divine. This sacred day,

Your shining face I see! I hear you say,

"Do this in remembrance of Me."

[Repeat]

THE WORD

THE FIRST LESSON: Exodus 12:1-14 ~ The Passover

foreshadows the deliverance the Lamb of God brings to Israel, to the world. The LORD said to Moses and Aaron in Egypt, “This

month is to be for you the first month, the first month of your year.

Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this

month each man is to take a lamb for his family, one for each

household. If any household is too small for a whole lamb, they

must share one with their nearest neighbor, having taken into

account the number of people there are. You are to determine the

amount of lamb needed in accordance with what each person will

eat. The animals you choose must be year-old males without

defect, and you may take them from the sheep or the goats. Take

care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when all the

people of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight.

Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and

tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs.

That same night they are to eat

the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread

made without yeast. Do not eat the meat raw or cooked in water,

but roast it over the fire—head, legs and inner parts. Do not leave

any of it till morning; if some is left till morning, you must burn it.

This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt,

your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in

haste; it is the LORD’s Passover. “On that same night I will pass

through Egypt and strike down every firstborn—both men and

animals—and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am

the LORD. The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where

you are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No

destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt. “This is a

day you are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall

celebrate it as a festival to the LORD—a lasting ordinance.”

THE PSALM OF THE DAY: Ps.116, page 107 (Unison)

THE GOSPEL LESSON: Mark 14:12-26 ~ On the night he is

betrayed, Jesus institutes the Lord's Supper. “On the first day of the

Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice

the Passover lamb, Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want

us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?” 13 So

he sent two of his disciples, telling them, “Go into the city, and a

man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14 Say to the

owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest

room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15 He will

show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make

preparations for us there.” 16 The disciples left, went into the city

and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the

Passover. 17 When evening came, Jesus arrived with the

Twelve. 18 While they were reclining at the table eating, he

said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating

with me.” 19 They were saddened, and one by one they said to him,

“Surely you don’t mean me?” 20 “It is one of the Twelve,” he

replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me. 21 The Son of

Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who

betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not

been born.” 22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when

PRAYER P: Hear the prayer of your people, O LORD, that the lips which have

praised you here may glorify you in the world, that the eyes which

have seen the coming of your Son, may long for his coming again,

and that all who have received in his true body and blood the

pledge of your forgiveness may be restored to live a new and holy

life, through Jesus Christ, our LORD, who lives and reigns with

you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

FINAL HYMN: #126 “LORD Jesus, You Are Going Forth”

_____________________________________

The minister exits the chancel. There is no final blessing, for

our worship does not end, but continues tomorrow evening as

part of the sacred Triduum, Latin referring to the three sacred

days of worship we know as Maundy Thursday, Good Friday &

Easter. The ushers will usher you out. Those wishing to remain

for prayer and meditation may do so before dispersing quietly.

PREPARATION FOR THE SACRAMENT

Pastor: The LORD Jesus Christ offers you, his gathered followers,

his true body and blood this evening, in with and under the bread

and wine in this holy supper. Let us prepare our hearts now in

prayer:

Pastor & Congregation: “Lord Jesus Christ, bless us as we

come before you to receive this heavenly food. As we come we

remember our deep need for what you give us here. We come

confessing our sins to you, those we know and those we do not

remember. We deserve your punishment for them, so we

repent of them. We are sorry for them. Forgive us, dear

Lord, and renew in us your joy and peace.

(A moment of silent meditation follows)

Pastor: God our heavenly Father has been merciful to us and has

given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.

Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I

forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son

+ and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

P: The Lord be with you.

C: (Spoken) And also with you.

P: Lift up your hearts to the Lord.

C: We lift them up to the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.

C: It is good and right so to do.

P: It is truly good and right that we should at all times in all places

give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting

God, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who brought the gift of

salvation to all people by his death on the tree of the cross, so

that the devil, who overcame us by a tree would in turn, by a tree

be overcome. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of

heaven, we praise your holy name and join their most glorious

song:

SING: THE SANCTUS

WORDS OF INSTITUTION, Spoken by the Pastor

Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread;

and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his

disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body, which is given

for you. Do this in remembrance of me."

Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and give it to them saying,

"Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant,

which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this,

whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me."

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

"O CHRIST, LAMB OF GOD" (Agnus Dei)

DISTRIBUTION: #309 “Draw Near and Take the Body of Our Lord”

AFTER THE SACRAMENT: “SONG OF SIMEON”

he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples,

saying, “Take it; this is my body.” 23 Then he took a cup, and when

he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for

many,” he said to them. 25 “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again

from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the

kingdom of God.” 26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to

the Mount of Olives.”

THE CHOIR SINGS: “Communion Canon"

LENTEN THEME: "Jesus Is Our Great High Priest"

TONIGHT: "Jesus Our Great High Priest Is Mediator of the

New Covenant"

Text: Hebrews 8:6-13 " But in fact the ministry Jesus has received

is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is

superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on

better promises. 7 For if there had been nothing wrong with that first

covenant, no place would have been sought for another. 8 But God

found fault with the people and said: “The days are coming, declares

the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel

and with the people of Judah. 9 It will not be like the covenant I

made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead

them out of Egypt, because they did not remain faithful to my

covenant, and I turned away from them, declares the Lord. 10 This is

the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel after that time,

declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them

on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 11 No

longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know

the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to

the greatest. 12 For I will forgive their wickedness and will

remember their sins no more.” 13 By calling this covenant “new,” he

has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and outdated

will soon disappear."

The Offering and The Lord's Prayer.
