Since 1998, Suncor, through the Suncor Energy Foundation, has supported Indspire – an Indige-nous-led registered charity that educates, connects and invests in Indigenous people to help them
achieve their highest potential. This includes the communities of Aamjiwnaang, Walpole Island and Kettle and Stony Point First Nation .
CHIPPEWA TRIBE-UNE - July 28, 2017 7
The Ipperwash Park Film Project was commissioned in 2005 during the Ipperwash Inquiry. Executive produced by Sam George and his lawyer
Murray Klippenstein, the goal of the project was to create an educational documentary that would use Ipperwash Provincial Park as
a case study to show how Indigenous peoples' lands could be wrongfully taken. By 2012, almost 2,000 hours of original archival
research had been conducted into the Huron Tract, with a focus on
lands surrendered between WWI and WWII through Indian Agent Thomas Paul. In 2016, the project's producer and researcher, Monica
Virtue, used portions of the content towards her Master's thesis project, The Ipperwash Beach Walk. Work on the project continues
through the Public Visualization Lab at OCAD University, with a recent collaborative mapping session open to community members from the
Kettle & Stony Point First Nation. Now, Monica is looking to other area First Nations for ideas on how to make use of the archival research and
knowledge gained through these unique projects. Possible approaches include collaborative mapping that joins oral history with archival
history, data visualization, locative (GPS) technology, or other forms of storytelling. Monica is a settler from Woodstock, Ontario, who is a fifth
-generation tourist to Ipperwash Beach.
Visualizing the Past/Future of Aamjiwnaang
A presentation by Monica Virtue will be held at the next Council meeting. Community Members
are invited to attend.

Request to Ban First Nation Logos and Names from All Ontario Schools
A request was received from Mrs. L. Courchene and her husband who are in the process of taking the Ontar-
io Ministry of Education to the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal. They are asking to ban all offensive First
Nation logos and names from all Ontario Schools. They find the logos and names harmful to First Nation
children. They are seeking First Nations support.
The Aamjiwnaang Education is seeking the Community’s input as to support this request or not.
Do you find the use of First Nation names or logos offensive and support the request?

CLENCH UPDATE July 24th, 2017
_______________________________________________________
The last meeting with Kettle Point and Aamjiwinaang was January 10th, 2017.
A joint letter was signed by Chief Bressette and Chief Rogers, on January 19th,
2017, where both Kettle Point and Aamjiwinaang reached a consensus that we
should place the matter in the hands of an independent arbitrator who would
have the power to decide on the proper division of these funds.
On going communications continue to take place with our legal counsel as it
relates to various issues regarding the arbitration process.
At Council’s Regular meeting of July 4th, 2017 Council directed that a meeting
with Kettle Point be arranged, ASAP, to discuss these issues.
As Council is anxious to keep this matter moving and settled, further infor-
mation regarding the process of the Clench matter will be shared once the next
steps are determined.

I have problems remembering names. My problem is not with odd names. Who could forget
Mrs. Pickle or Mr. Outhouse? It’s the easy names that give me the chills.
I mean, there you are. You’re introduced to someone. You smile and chat for 30 seconds.
You part company. “Nice to meet you, Mrs. ….” The name is gone. Evaporated. You mum-
ble and quickly move on.
Once in a while along comes a Harry Lorayne. He amazes his audiences by being introduced
to hundreds of people, one after another, then giving the name of anyone who asks for it.
It was said that Charles Schwab could remember the names of all 8,000 of his employees.
Napoleon knew thousands of his soldiers by name. the rest of us attempt to match faces and
names together and try not to embarrass ourselves along the way.
Names are so important. One of the first jobs God gave Adam and Eve was to name the ani-
mals. All the fish, fowl and land beasts had to be named. I had a dog named Budweiser. An
animal without a name is not the same.
When I lived on a farm, we children were not allowed to name animals that would end up on
our dinner plates. It would be hard to eat a hamburger named Elsie.
We are known by our name. the Book of Numbers in the Bible begins with a Census. It is a
very long list of names. Just names. The sweetest sound in any language is the sound of our
own name. When I walk into my favorite restaurant, I am greeted by name. I guess that is
part of why it is my favorite restaurant.
Maybe using a popular memory trick would help. You hear a name and then think of some-
thing that rhymes with it or sounds like it. Frank Baer (he’s a big, hairy guy). But be careful.
A friend once had to introduce a Mr. Monk. She said, “Ladies and gentlemen, Friar Tuck’.
You may have someone’s name down pat, but don’t get careless. The late Sir Malcolm Sar-
gent once had a member of Scandinavian royalty attend one of his concerts. At intermission,
he rushed to the Royal Box with his leading soloist and said proudly, “Your Majesty, may I
introduce Sergio Poliakoff? Sergio-the King of Norway!”
The distinguished person in the box shifted slightly and murmured, “Sweden.” Ouch!!
But God never forgets who we are, what our name is, what need. And God always knows
where we are from.
