DISCIPLINE-SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES / LEARNING OUTCOMES: A General Education CourseNS-1 Gain a basic understanding of science by developing skills that correspond to at least levels 1-3, (knowledge, comprehension, application) in Bloom’s Taxonomy of Educational Objectives in the Cognitive Domain.

NS-2 Understand science as inquiry by recognizing scientific and quantitative methods and the differences between these approaches and other methods of inquiry and to communicate findings, analysis and interpretation.

NS-3 Understand the history and nature of science by identifying and recognizing the differences among competing scientific theories, thereby encouraging curiosity and critical thinking that characterize science.

NS-4 View science from personal and social perspectives by demonstrating knowledge of issues and problems facing modern science, including issues that touch upon ethics, values and/or public policies.

NS-5 Recognize the relationship between science and technology by demonstrating knowledge of the interdependence of science and technology and their influence on, and contribution to, modern culture.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES/OBJECTIVES FOR BSC 2093C:

See chart, last page.

MEANS OF ACCOMPLISHING OUTCOMES:

The primary method of instruction is lecture. This is based on the textbook, supplemental by material from other texts, reference books, internet investigations, and personal experiences in education, teaching, nursing, and other allied health fields.

Each chapter begins with an overview of key concepts that is intended as a brief summary instilled with the primary emphasis. It should be used to briefly review specific subject matter before a lecture. It may spur some ideas of approach and organization of the material. Once you have viewed this, flip to the end of the chapter and read the “Review of Key Concepts”. Note the italic words. Then when you have done this, read the chapter to better understand the objectives.

Laboratory is correlated with class presentations. Experiments, demonstrations, cat dissection, internet explorations, computer software, and audio visuals enhance lecture and the learning process of the students. Laboratory is an integral component of lecture.

Students are encouraged and rewarded for performing additional learning opportunities related to the subject area with prior approval.

Discussions are encouraged in and out of class. Questions are posed for student comment and reflection.

Students are asked to utilize the internet resources provided by the text which include flash cards, summaries, outlines, practice quizzes, video clips, and other interactive material.

Lecture test are comprised of 75 multiple choice questions. There are several short quizzes that can possibly be given prior to lecture that will cover the previous lecture or reading material. Go to the web site for the text. Access the quizzes, flash cards, and supplemental for each chapter. At the end, it is formatted for you to send the results to me. Please send these to me for proof that you have utilized this material. Laboratory test consist of tests containing essay, fill-in-the blank, identifying structures on preserved specimens, microscope slide identification, equipment identification and performance skills of the equipment/procedure demonstration.

INDIVIDUAL INSTRUCTOR HANDOUT –

ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT: You must provide. They can be purchased at the bookstore or other businesses

Dissection KitApron or Lab Coat (to protect your clothing)Gloves (you must bring your own)

SCOPE:

BSC 2093 will cover chapters 1-16. BSC 2094 will cover chapters 17-29. The laboratory experiences will be closely integrated with the contents of the textbook.

GRADING:

Laboratory grades will be added together and an average obtained. All lecture exams, final exam, and lab average will be added together and divided by ten to obtain a numerical average.

At times a question may arise concerning a test question or a grade. I will be willing to address the problem concerning the grade or test question if it is presented to me in writing and within five (5) working or school days of said test or grade. If it is not done within these guidelines, the subject is considered moot. It is your responsibility to read back over your old exams and make sure you understand why you missed each question.

THERE WILL BE NO MAKE-UP EXAMS!!

You must bring a #2 pencil for tests. Each test will be 75 questions, multiple choice. The answer sheet will be a computer score answer form. Lab test will be of varying forms. The exams will cover the specified chapters for each test. The questions will come mainly from the text and maybe a couple will be from outside of the text but will be covered in class. Read the chapter, look at the charts, graphs, under the illustrations, questions at the end of the chapter, and the student study guide, and lab manual. Any of these is fair game. You used your hard-earned money to purchase these books, so learn as much as you can from them.

Test Curve Points (if given for an exam, are worth varying number of points) Information must be typed. Information must be submitted via e-mail to [email protected] Information must be submitted as an attachment to the e-mail, preferably in Microsoft

Word Information must be submitted within 7 calendar days of the hour time you took the test. Information must include the following:

Name: Chapters of test:Date submitted/date of test:

Test 1 – Chapters 1, 2

1. b. stability page 14 Characteristics of Life: Organization. page 16 Cellular composition. Metabolism and excretion. Responsiveness and

movement. Homeostasis. Development. Reproduction. Evolution.

5. b. chemical, microscopic, cellular, tissue, organ, system, organism. page 12 Figure 1.9 The Body’s Structural Hierarchy. The pictures shows smallest to

largest as: atom, molecule, macromolecule, organelle, cell, tissue, organ, system, organism.

YES, this takes lots of time to do. As a matter of fact it usually takes 6 hours + to do it, but it is usually worth lots of points. The point of the exercise is to learn from mistakes, regain some points, and prepare for the final (since it is cumulative). There are 75 questions on each test and each one must be done to receive the full credit. References can come from various pages of the text, since the text repeats information in various parts of the chapter.

CONFERENCES AND ASSISTANCE:

You are welcome and encouraged to come to my office to talk over any problem you may have concerning the material in this course. Office hours are posted on my office door. However, it would be of help if you would schedule an appointment time. The best method of doing this would be to check my schedule, note the times I have scheduled for office hours, and slip a note under my door stating your name, the time you wish to see me, and a reference to the reason for

BSC 2093C7

the meeting.

ABSENCES:

Regular class attendance is expected of all students. Each student should become involved in all class and lab activities. Every effort will be made by your instructor to develop and maintain a classroom atmosphere in which the student would feel free to ask questions and become involved in class discussions. Authorized, official school functions are not counted as absences. Evaluation of absences is my responsibility. Students with excessive absences may suffer grade loss. Also those on financial aide may suffer by having to repay funds for not attending class. Tardiness to class is discouraged. If I record three tardies, I will consider this an absence. If there is a quiz given in class or lab, it will be done usually at the start of class. If you are tardy and come in after it has begun, you are not able to take it. The only time I expect you to leave class early is when there is an emergency. If I get long winded lecturing, I do expect someone to assist in notifying me that time is up. Most clocks in classrooms are to my back. I would not want to make you late for your next class. All other absences will be counted regardless of the reason for the absence. I will not withdraw you from a class for absences.

Please try not to miss a test. A test schedule is provided. MAKE-UP TESTS WILL NOT BE GIVEN FOR ANY REASON!!! If you miss a test, the final exam grade will be substituted for the missed test - one time. If you miss two tests, the second test missed will be averaged in as a zero. If you take all tests and do better on the final exam than your lowest test grade, you may substitute your final exam grade for the lowest test grade. You are encouraged to take all tests even if you are not prepared for the one that you can miss. Accidents have been known to happen after you have missed a test because of nonpreparedness and you miss a second. I’m sorry but that second missed test is now computed in as a “0”. Use the test as a learning tool and take it so you can get your copy of the test to keep with your other test to assist with your studying for the final exam.

THERE ARE NO MAKE-UPS FOR LAB TEST!! Whatever grades you have will be averaged by all possible numbers tests, even if you did not take all of them. Lab test will be of varying forms. Please be on time for lab. Lab quizzes will be usually given at the first part of lab. You are expected to stay until you have finished your lab. Please prepare yourself for lab before you arrive. If you have done this, you may finish on time or even early and can leave. If you are not prepared, you will not be able to finish most labs on time. Because of my schedule, I will not be able to allow you extra time in lab.

Keep all of you old class test to assist you in studying for the final exam. Your test will usually have 75 questions, all multiple choice. Staple your answer sheet with each test when I return it to that test in case a question arises. Your test will be returned on the next class meeting. Do not ask for your grade until then. If I finish them early, you have a folder in the box in the back of the lab to pick up all papers to be returned. Please check this box periodically. If you lose your test, please see a friend for a copy.

EXTRA CREDIT:

BSC 2093C8

Page 9: CHIPOLA COLLEGE syllabus with... · Web viewScope: basic organization and structure with histology, integumentary system, skeletal system, muscular system, and nervous system. Laboratory

Occasionally during the semester, science seminars are presented. These will receive 5 points extra credit to be added to the total number of points for the semester for the class. There is a form to fill out. The form is a part of this syllabus at the end. There is a possibility of attending 5 seminars. This form must be turned in by the next class meeting following the seminar to receive credit. Usually you will place these in the tray in lab where I collect papers. Credit will not be given if it is turned in late. If there are not 5 seminars, there are videos that you can view in lab next to my office during times when I am present and there are no labs occurring. When you watch a video for extra credit, please use videos that are appropriate for your study at that time. I.e. don’t watch a video on reproduction when you are studying the skin. Use the seminar form and check video. You may write notes on a piece of paper while watching the video. You must submit the form via the internet or put it into the pan in the lab.

For those that choose to watch videos, the maximum of extra credit possibilities is 25 points. The videos are to be spaced so that they cover material that you are going over in class. Do not watch videos that are not remotely related to what you are covering in class. Do not save up to watch a bunch of videos at the end of the semester. Do not wait until the last two weeks of class to watch bunches of videos. Videos cannot be watched for credit the last full week of classes before finals week. Videos must be watched in lab when my schedule states that I am around. If additional time is needed due to a scheduling conflict, talk with me and we can arrange a time for me to be around.

PERSONAL NOTE

Turn off all cell phone and beepers before class! If there is an emergency, have someone call student services and they will get a message to you if it occurs during class time.

As you may remember from having read the course requirements, some of you have had biology in college and some took the test to check your biology retention from high school. Just because you “eeked” by does not mean that you will pass or do well in this course. Just read the book and look at the pictures to see the complexity of the material. This course is not “a piece of cake”. As you may note from the numbering of this class, it is a 2000 level course. This puts it into the sophomore level college numbering system. This is not an introductory class and is not taught as such. This level class assumes you remember you biology. As your text and I assume, if you don’t remember your biology, you are expected to go to the library or dig up your old biology book and read along with your anatomy and physiology book.

You have embarked into a career choice that requires intense effort on your part. I did not sign you up for this course nor did I pay your fees. YOU DID. You have the responsibility to come to class every day. Read ahead in your book. Do extra work with no credit given. Do your own drop paperwork if you have not committed yourself before the final drop date.

We all have problems during the semester: Doctor’s appointment, personal and relative sickness, deaths, accidents, traffic tickets, automobile troubles, financial troubles, and others. I am sorry if these woes befall you. I have them also. You have a text that provides you with all the information needed to pass your test. I have read it and I expect you to read and study it. There is no one page less important than the other is. The class is not geared to only one profession. Many majors require this class. By in large most are in nursing.

My job in this class is to assist you in understanding the material. I will do some

BSC 2093C9

Page 10: CHIPOLA COLLEGE syllabus with... · Web viewScope: basic organization and structure with histology, integumentary system, skeletal system, muscular system, and nervous system. Laboratory

lecturing. Mainly my emphasis in class is in relating the material to one’s self-functioning and giving an overall view of relationships “the rest of the story”, and answering related questions to facilitate understanding. You are to read, memorize, assimilate, and apply. I try to practice what I preach. Your patients will greatly appreciate you if you posses a depth and wealth of knowledge. Patients are more inclined to ask a greater number of questions from those in the health profession other than their doctors. Many times these questions will be ask of you as a clarification of what the doctor has said.

Many of you experience test anxiety. If you are to achieve in your profession, you must overcome this handicap. Personally I can think of no one and have met no one who does not experience this to some degree. The first avenue of attack is:

Are you committed? Have you prepared yourself? Have you investigated self-help techniques? If you have done your part then seek help from:

Disabled Student Services Success CenterInstructorsComputer labs

Many of you are clock watchers. I tend to milk the clock for everything that I can get out of it. I do understand that you must get to other classes, so at EXACTLY 50 past the hour, get up and leave. No feelings will be hurt. I know you must leave and I will stop talking.

Your class grade will not be governed by how I feel about you. It will be based on the numerical points that you earn. Note in the syllabus are two sheets where you keep up with your grades. They are the same as I use. You can receive a few points for keeping up with this. Your grade is your business. I simply have the misfortune to have to assign a letter grade to it.

Sometimes a few of your test questions may seem not quite kosher. I do not give the same test every semester. Sometimes I will use an old question off of an old test and the rest will be new. By this, I do not have the luxury to perfect the wording of each question before it is used. Sometimes there is more than one correct answer. I will hand score the additional choice. Sometimes I simply just key in the incorrect letter. I will make up for that either by redoing the scoring or compensating for this in the curve if one is given. Most times you keep your test. If there is a night class for your section, these will be available for you to pick up the day after they have had their test. You have in your syllabus all the sections scheduled. Keep up with this.

This class is not easy. Simply look at the book. Your test will come from any where within those chapters that it is to cover. Also note lab. It goes along with the course. Some questions could come from there.

I have my fingers in lots of pies. I simply want to keep up with what is going on around me. For A&P, this means anything that relates to living – from being born to dying and after death. This means world and local news, chemistry, math, biology, psychology, sociology, eating, sleeping, exercise, and anything that you can name that affects life from yesterday to tomorrow and to the future.

Yes I expect you to read before you come to class and I want you to know more than me. Going to school is a full time job. It is work. If you don’t grasp concepts quickly, go over them lots of time, especially before class and ask questions. Form study groups. Form internet chat groups. Talk about A&P among your selves. Read it, see it, say it, hear it, feel it, eat it, ect., and live it!

ATTENDANCE AND TARDINESS POLICYRegular attendance is expected of all students. Each student is accountable to the

instructor for all class absences. There are three acceptable excuses for absences: (1) severe illness, (2) death in the immediate family, and (3) official college activity (approved by Student Services). Any questionable excuse shall be verified by the office of Student Services when requested by the instructor.

When any absence occurs, it is the responsibility of the student to contact the instructor as soon as possible and make arrangements about making up work. Work must be made up within one week following the absence or within the time specified by the instructor in case of extended absence. A ten-point penalty is assessed for late work. Except as noted above, make-up work will not be permitted after the one-week deadline, and the instructor will record a grade of “0” for each assignment not submitted.

Tardiness to class is disruptive to learning and is unacceptable. If the student is tardy, the student shall see his/her instructor at the end of the class period, and the instructor will determine if the tardiness is excusable. Excessive tardiness may be counted as absences at the discretion of the instructor.

WITHDRAWAL POLICYA student may withdraw from a course prior to the deadline for withdrawing which is

listed in the college catalog and the college class schedule. A student who has missed too many classes or who is making unsatisfactory progress in the course can withdraw and receive a “W” mark for the course. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain the necessary request form from the Registrar’s Office for withdrawing from a class, to obtain signatures for completing it, and to turn it in to the Registrar’s Office before the deadline. It is advisable to check later to ensure that the withdrawal has been processed.

NOTE: In 1997, the Florida Legislature passed House Bill 1545 which requires that students who have enrolled more than two times in the same college credit course must pay tuition fees at 100% of the full cost of instruction. The full cost of instruction is the same as the non-resident tuition fee. All Florida community colleges and state universities are required to begin “counting” attempts beginning in the Fall term 1997. An “attempt” is any course which remains on the student’s class schedule past the published drop/add date for any academic term. When a student withdraws from a course, the withdrawal counts as an attempt. A student is allowed to repeat a course a maximum of three (3) times. On the third attempt, a student cannot withdraw; he must receive a grade. No additional attempts will be allowed without prior approval from the Admissions Committee; approvals may be granted for extenuating circumstances only.

I have read and fully understand the attendance, tardiness and withdrawal policies of Chipola College.
