AACEI Chinook-Calgary Newsletter - November 2016 1
President’s Message
Dear AACE Calgary Chinook section members and friends,
Time is flying by fast and it is already less than two months to Christmas and holiday season. We are thick into the proceedings of Chinook Calgary section, having successfully conducted two-day workshop on CCP certification preparation and two technical dinner meetings since start of current session in September 2016.
I am glad to advise that our October technical dinner meeting on October 26th presented by Lakshmanan Simhadri on the topic of “How to Transform Estimate Details into Meaningful information- Power of Data Visualization” was very well attended. Based on membership feedback to include some non-technical topics as well for dinner meeting, we are pleased to announce that on November 17th, Dr. Lionel Laroche will be presenting an interesting topic “Bridging cultural diversity for competitive advantage”. It is going to be an exciting presentation, so please register at the earliest.
It will be my endeavor to educate readers of this newsletter on wonderful benefits of membership that can be used for your advantage. AACEI provide technical guidance, educational products, events and eight professional certifications to address the diverse needs of members and customers. Our members work in a variety of areas including project/program management, estimating, planning and scheduling, cost engineering, decision and risk management, earned value and claims and disputes. According to the most recent AACE Salary Survey, on average AACE members earn about $12,500 higher than non-members with the same amount of work experience. Having AACEI certification differentiates you from others as a validation of your superior knowledge and skills. AACE's 2017 Annual Meeting has been announced. It will take place in Orlando, FL from June 11th to June 14th 2017. The Education Board is now accepting applications for the 2017 Annual Meeting Seminars. Individuals interested in conducting a seminar must complete and submit the 2017 Call for Seminar Proposal application available on website www.aacei.org. AACEI’s local sections serve specific service areas and provide unique opportunities for members to interact locally and share ideas and techniques with one another. In current market where teams are leaner and employers expect you to wear multiple hats on job, our programs provide unique opportunities for members to interact locally and share ideas and techniques with one another. Please come and participate in various capacities. I look forward to meeting you all at our upcoming events.

DINNER MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT
Thursday – November 17, 2016
Topic: Leading multicultural teams for Competitive Advantage
Presenter: Dr. Lionel Laroche – Owner, MultiCultural Business Solutions
Presentation Topic: This presentation provides insight on how to lead multicultural teams to high performing teams and increase the competitive
advantage in organizations. Indeed, the way we think, communicate and respond in a wide range of professional situations
depends to a significant extent on where we have been brought up. Leading multicultural project teams effectively require that
leaders and team members understand how cultural differences impact the interpersonal dynamics of the team and learn to
overcome the initial challenges in order to benefit from the creativity and innovation that result from having different people look
at the same problems from different perspectives.
Presenters Bio:
Over the past 18 years, Dr. Lionel has provided cross-cultural competency training and coaching services to over 75,000 people in
18 countries. Lionel specializes in helping professionals and organizations overcome the challenges they experience initially
when operating in culturally unfamiliar environments and turn these cultural differences into a source of creativity and
innovation. Lionel's client lists includes many Fortune 500 companies such as ConocoPhillips, BNP Paribas, Glencore, Total, Sun
Life, RBC, Scotiabank, TD Bank, Pratt & Whitney, Johnson & Johnson, Procter & Gamble, Xerox, Colgate Palmolive, etc.
Lionel’s presentations are usually described as informative, thought-provoking and practical. Lionel is the author of over 100
publications examining the impact of cultural differences in organizations and of three books:
Danger and Opportunity: Bridging Cultural Diversity for Competitive Advantage
Recruiting, Retaining and Promoting Culturally Different Employees
Managing Cultural Diversity in Technical Professions
Born in France, Lionel obtained his “Diplôme d’Ingénieur Polytechnicien” from the Ecole Polytechnique de Paris, France and his

Topic: Transform Estimate Detail to Meaningful Information -
The Power of Data Visualization
Presenter: Lakshmanan Simhadri- President & CEO of PPEI
Presentation Topic:
A good estimate is part of the foundation for a successful project. Lot of time and effort goes in to producing a detail
estimate. The question is -Can we leverage greater value from all the detail data that lie buried in the estimate? “Big Data”
– is now a well-known concept; it simply means data sets so large that conventional methods of making sense of the data
prove inadequate. As we know, Estimate details can contain 100,000 lines to over a million lines configured in multitude
of columns. The data can be overwhelming and one could end up with incorrect or incomplete information trying to
summarize data in a disorganized manner. This presentation will aim to make participants aware of advances and tools
available today for effortless transformation of data to meaningful information and powerful visualization. Lakshmanan
will discuss some examples of such enhancements and seek members’ consensus on the value of adapting such a change.
These changes go a long way in providing estimate insights to every stakeholder in form and content, as they need. The
work process drives better quality right from the beginning as the focus is on stakeholder needs.
Presenters Bio:
