Chinese Sky Lantern

Chinese sky lanterns are a fun and beautiful thing to create. I will be giving set of instructions below along with pictures so as to demonstrate how they could be made.

Step 1: Create the Candle

Make a tight know from the fabric by tying it and then trim the end pieces so each side is exactly 2 ½ cm.

Centre the two 24 inches florist wires on the knot so they may seem perpendicular to each other and their center points overlapping the knot.

Now the knot has to be wrapped up by the wires and the four ends of the wires have to be almost 25cm each.

Now melt the candle such that it’s able to release its wax and catch the molten wax in any plate or crucible.

Now place the knot the way it is into the molten wax and let it soak for the next 3-5mins.

Now undo the newly made wick by the wax.

Now wrap up the aluminum-foil strip along the knot at the wick’s center.

Step 2: Constructing the Bamboo frame and adding the candle

Cut three bamboo skewers in halves as per their longitudinal axis by using a blade and you could use little heating all the way so as to make this step easier.

Line up all three cut bamboos from top to end for making one long stip.

Tape up the overlapping connecting points by sing an inflammable tape. Secure the tips together with the tape for making a circle.

Now tape up the ends of the foil-wrapped that protrude from the wick to the opposite sides of the bamboo frame.

Step 3: Fireproof paper

Hang by sung the clothespins around 17-21 kitchen paper towels on clothesline.

Place a plastic tab under the paper for catching any which drops down.

Spray each side of the paper with fireproofing spray.

Step 4: Creating a Pattern for the Balloon

Take a brown colored craft paper and draw a 1m vertical line on it using an inch tape.

Page 6: Chinese Sky Lantern.docx

Form the base of the vertical line now draw a horizontal ling which is about 30cm in length.

Now make another horizontal line which is approx. 50cm in length from two thirds of the way up the vertical line.

Making a connection between the two horizontal lines which gently curve inward prior to they meet the vertical line.

Page 7: Chinese Sky Lantern.docx

Draw another line which is just the mirror image of the line you just made for connecting the left tips of the two horizontal lines.

Sketch more mirror image like lines for connecting each end of the upper horizontal line to the top of the vertical line.

Now cut the entire shape that you have drawn by suing the scissors.

Step 5: Finish the balloon

Lay down all the paper pieces flat on a clean surface.

By using a non-flammable glue seal the ends of the paper which overlap against each other.

Lay a single pair of the paper towel/tissue paper over the brown craft pattern.

Repeat the same step with the other 2-piece paper panels that are left.

Join the pointed tips of the paper towel/tissue paper panels with each other.

Step 6: Completing the Skin lantern

Join the opening of the paper bag to the bamboo frame that was made earlier.

Fold the end of the paper bag upward for covering the end of the frame.

Take your lantern in the open sky either at night or at dust and enjoy.
