Chinese Presbyterian Church Minutes of Annual Congregational Meeting 2019

The Annual Congregational Meeting of the Chinese Presbyterian Church, Sydney was held on Sunday 31st March 2019 at 10:40am at the church Auditorium. The Financial Statements for the year ended 31 December 2018, which included the Budget for 2019 had been circulated before the meeting. The Kirk Session and Committee Management reports were available at the meeting. Over 250 members were present. Constitute The meeting was constituted by the Moderator, Rev Chris Chan, with a

reading from Luke 14:25-35 and prayer.

Apologies The following Apologies were received: Elder Albert Seah, Scila Seah, Warren G. Lowe, Elder Jason Lo, Daisy & Alfred Wong, Jonathan Wong, Pastor Dorothy Choi, Kirsten and Megan Leung, Crystal Koo, Leo Yim and Christy Lee.

Pastoral Sharing The Moderator shared that the front page of the weekly Order of Service has been recently changed. It now refers to CPC (under the heading) as “a disciple making church”. Jesus gives us the requirements for being a true disciple. He describes it in a way that is a contrast between how much you love your father and mother as compared with how much you love the Lord. Faith is not just an add-on. It needs to be first. Being saved is about total change in our lives. It is our aim to help each of our members to change. If we don’t do that, we are just deceiving ourselves. Today’s sermon was on “Christ’s coming”. The day will come when we need to be accountable to the Lord for how we have lived. On that day, there will be no hiding behind a mask. Even before that day, our church needs to glorify our God, and our members need to be disciples. Therefore, all leaders are to be encouraged to reflect on whether they are making disciples.

Minutes The minutes of the following meeting was taken as read and accepted: • Annual Congregational Meeting held 25th March 2018

Sharing of Information from Session

The Session Clerk shared that the Session Report is not received but is there as information for the members. The clerk encouraged members to read the Report and to send any questions to him.

Report of the Committee of Management

The Session Clerk, on behalf of the Secretary, Elder Lawrence Wong, presented the Committee of Management report. It was resolved to receive the report of the Committee of Management for the year ended 31 December 2018.

Report on the ‘From Generation to Generation’ Project

Mr Ben Johnston and Mr Michael Chor presented an update of the G2G project. Mr Johnston reminded the congregation that the project began back in 2004 with the Masterplan, that the “From Generation to Generation” project was

finally presented to the congregation in 2012 and we finally saw the completion of stages 3 and 4 earlier this year in March. He summarized what has been delivered: • Renovations and improvements to 400 and 402 Crown Street • Upgraded Fellowship Hall and Building 4 • Relocation of CPC ministry and administration spaces • Improved and accessible kitchen • Upgraded caretaker’s accommodation • Relocated library • Improvements to a number of non-compliance issues • Upgraded and improvements to the toilets • New family room/baby-change area • Upgrade to the old committee room • New larger meeting space on the top floor above the toilets • New creche room • New bridge access from Building 3 to Building 4 Mr Johnston went through the final Financial Summary. He shared that the committee was very careful in managing and coordinating the three sets of builders who undertook the three stages. As such, the project was able to contain costs despite some unforeseen issues causing variations. The COM also took advantage of the building works to improve some additional items along the way. For Stage 3 and 4, the original budget, excluding design and fees, was $500k. Additional scope of works were identified and approved by COM. Total Approval was received for $529k plus $50k for design, totalling $579k. Even with variations the Total Expenditure, including design for Stage 3, was $610k, which is an over run of approximately $29k, or less than 5%. This over-run was managed and monitored but also unavoidable. It has been fully funded however by the G2G and School Building Fund fundraising undertaken to date. It was resolved to receive the report. It was resolved to ratify the approval to increase the expenditure limit for G2G project Stages 3&4 to $610,000. Mr Sidney Han on behalf of the congregation thanked Mr Johnston and Mr Chor and their team.

Report on the ‘Digital Ministry’ Project

The Session Clerk on behalf of Warren G. Lowe, gave a brief update on the Digital Ministry project – that Stage 1, the new Website is near completion. It was resolved to receive the report. The moderator thanked Mr Warren G. Lowe and his team.

Report of the Treasurer

The Hon. Treasurer, Elder Albert Seah presented a Treasurer’s report via audio recording.

It was resolved to receive the Financial Statements of the Congregation and Trust Accounts for the year ended 31 December 2018.

Budget for 2019 The Hon. Treasurer, Elder Albert Seah presented the Budget for 2019 via audio recording. It was resolved to receive and adopt the Budget for the financial year ended 31 December 2019. The Moderator shared that running a deficit is very real. But the biggest issue is whether we are being good stewards. If we take our Lord’s teaching seriously, CPC should have no problems in meeting the budget. So, while we are mindful of the church’s needs, let us be also mindful of our commitment to our Lord and our personal giving. The Moderator then gave thanks to Elder Albert Seah and the Accounting Team.

Terms of Appointment

The Session Clerk shared with the congregation that the Presbytery now requires the congregation to not just endorse but to approve the Terms of Appointment of the Pastoral Assistants. The Budget that has just been approved incorporates also the Terms of Appointment. It was resolved to approve the Terms of Appointment for all Pastoral Assistant positions, with remuneration in accordance with the appropriate General Assembly approved scales.

Report of the Auditor

It was resolved to receive the report of the Auditor and to thank him for his service to the church.

David Chen Tai Wai Michael Chor Eric Fung Yun Hou Robert Lam Su Chun Liew Warren G. Lowe Michael Luk Frank Lum Ben Ng Susan Quay Scila Seah Rodney Wong Meily Choi Ivanhoe Choi

The Moderator invited further nominations from the meeting. There were no extra nominations received. The Moderator explained that the number of nominations received (15) was below the church limit (20), and so no ballot was required.

It was resolved to accept the above nominations as members of the 2019 Committee of Management. It was resolved to authorize the Committee of Management to approve expenditure for any one project or purpose up to a limit of $40,000 without reference to the congregation.

Ben Johnston

CPC Annual Report 7

Warren

G. Lowe

2019 Session Report Elder Bernard Wong on behalf of the Kirk Session

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 20:19-20

Our church theme for 2019 was “To reach the Lost and to Disciple the Saved”. As believers in the Lord Jesus, we are instructed to spread the good news and reach the lost. We are also commanded to be imitators of our Lord. We are to be obedient to our God as Christ was and become like Him. This is what it means to be a disciple.

As we plan for 2020, we will continue to have a focus on Discipleship. Members are encouraged to not only be disciples but also to be disciple makers.

Attendance at Public Worship The average attendance for church worship services in recent years:

Service 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 English (9:00 am) 152 153 159 151 168 180 189 175 165 159 Cantonese 223 219 220 212 206 203 188 180 191 192 Mandarin 114 106 109 121 124 124 124 129 138 136 English/Cantonese 45 46 42 42 36 37 43 31 22 21 English (4:00 pm) 56 62 50 50 47 42 38 31 33 31 Total 590 586 580 576 581 586 582 546 549 539

The table shows that average attendance for most of the services stayed very similar to 2018, however there was a slight decline in attendance in particular in the 9am English service. Let us pray for CPC and the growth of the ministries at CPC. We pray that the hearts of our members will be one of growth in one’s relationship with our Lord.

Worship Services Most of the services continued in their respective time and venues as in recent years. During the year we also had a number of guest preachers serving us at our worship services and retreats, including Elder Yang Wang, Rev. Peter Wongso, Rev. Grace Tsoi, Elder Xing Long Huang, Rev. Joseph Kao, Rev John Ting, Rev. David Cook, Rev. Jeremy Tan, Elder Peter Yeung, Rev. Chris Chua, Elder Laurence Chu, Elder Ernest Chong, Dr Patrick Fung, Dr Jennie Fung, Elder Jason Lo, Rev. Lawrence Fung and others. Whilst they are not part of our pastoral team, they definitely contribute to the ministry at CPC.

Pastoral Team and Theological Students During 2019, Rev Chan as Moderator, chaired the Session and COM meetings and pastored across all the services. Rev Andrew Choy continued to serve together with Pastor Dorothy Choi, ministering to the Cantonese speaking congregation. Rev Tom Wall continued to minister to the English congregation. However, it was with sadness that we said farewell to Rev Jinsoon Saw at the beginning of 2019 as he left us for personal reasons. We wish him and Oi Ling well. Pastor Jonathan Chong, who pastored the Evening Service congregation and Ignite (youth group), also resigned in January to serve at another Presbyterian church. We thank Mr Chong for his methodical and firm leadership in his relatively short time with us. We wish him fruitfulness in his new ministry. This year we introduced two new members to our pastoral team as pastors-in-training, a new junior pastoral position at CPC. Mr William Xu and Ms Esther Wang will mainly be serving with the Mandarin ministry. Both Mr Xu and Ms Wang are not strangers to our congregation. Mr Xu was a theological student, whom we supported. During the previous three years he had been studying at the Chinese Theological College Australia Inc (CTCA) where he earned a Bachelor of Ministry degree. Congratulations to Mr Xu on completing your studies. Ms Wang had also been supported by us as a missionary serving student ministry at the UNSW. During this time, she completed her Graduate Diploma of Divinity at SMBC and is now completing her Master of Divinity part time, also at SMBC. Both Mr Xu and Ms Wang have been serving faithfully at CPC and we welcome them to our Pastoral Team. We thank the Pastoral Team for their faithfulness and continuous energy. The Pastoral Team members were all assigned areas of responsibility in the ministries of CPC, and they have made very significant contributions to the leadership. Apart from preaching and teaching, our Pastoral Team were heavily involved with pastoral care, visitations, counselling, mentoring, planning, preparations of programs, leading bible studies and the list goes on. On top of this list, our Presbyterian Ministers, Rev Chris Chan and Rev. Thomas Wall were also involved with conducting sacraments, weddings, funerals, which also involved a lot of time in more pastoral care, counselling and hours of preparation. We thank our Lord for this team which He has supplied to CPC. We pray that our Lord will continue to uplift each member of the team as He uses them to help us grow in our worship of Him. May our Lord be honoured and praised. We also continued to support theological students during 2019. This year we supported Dr Anthony Tang and Mr Felix Siu as Vocational Ministry Trainees, and Mr Charles Leung and Mr Raymond Wong as Theological Students in Training.

CPC Annual Report 11

Session has recently introduced two theological student categories. We recognise that our members study at theological colleges for different reasons. Some are studying to become ministers, while others are wanting to be more equipped. CPC wishes to encourage all our members who wish to pursue theological studies. As such, we have the Vocational Ministry Trainees and the Theological Students in Training.

● The Vocational Ministry Trainees are students who are studying towards full time ministry and possibly to become Presbyterian ministers.

● The Theological Students in Training are students who are exploring future areas of service which might not be in full time ministry but wish to be more equipped in their knowledge of the bible.

Session prays that more members of our congregation will consider theological training in order to serve our Lord.

Mission and Outreach

The different congregations and fellowship groups continued to be active in evangelism and mission support. A short-term mission to Tamworth, jointly with Tamworth Community Presbyterian Church was held in early December. This was the first of a three-year cycle.

Worship services and fellowship groups also continued to conduct many evangelistic services and meetings. This year our Missionary Fund giving was below the set target. The Lord does know our needs and provides for the ministry. As we move into 2020, we pray that the members of CPC will continue to have a giving heart and seek God’s leading in missionary giving. More importantly, we pray that the Lord will guide us in where we place our resources for missions, that we are obedient to Him for His Kingdom.

Session

The Session functioned harmoniously and efficiently under the leadership of Rev Chris Chan. The Pastoral team continued to attend Session meetings as guests of Session, which has allowed for closer alignment between the Session and the Pastoral Team. It has been definitely a fruitful initiative. As we look forward to 2020, the Session has also recognised the need for more elders. Please pray for the Session as we approach members of our congregation who are called for this area of ministry and service.

Staff and Other Support

We gratefully acknowledge the faithful work of the Administrative Assistant to the Pastoral Team, Mrs Suzanne Lim, the office staff, Ms Irene Ma and Ms Belinda Yu, as well as our caretakers Mr David Lau and Mrs Amy Lau.

However, it is with sadness that we say farewell to Mrs Suzanne Lim as the Administrative Assistant to the Pastoral Team. She has been a valuable contributor to the team for nearly ten years and has served the Moderators and Pastoral Team of CPC faithfully. She will be sorely missed. We wish her well as she continues to serve our Lord in a new role.

We also thank the many brothers and sisters who help in the church office during the year. Many of the church’s ministries would not have been possible without our neighbours, the Crown Street Public School, allowing us to use some of their facilities on Sundays. Their kindness and support are gratefully acknowledged. Just as essential was the effort of numerous voluntary workers who devoted their energy and time sacrificially to serve others. They included scripture teachers, Sunday School teachers, Language School staff, congregation lunches, coffee shop, morning teas, and countless other services that added significantly to the richness of our church life and ministries. May the Lord richly reward them who served with humility and love. Pastoral Team Moderator Rev. Chris Chan Associate Minister Vacant Associate Minister Vacant Assistant to the Minister (F/T) Rev.

· 2020-07-16 · Mr Charles Leung gave a brief presentation of

CPC Annual Report 14

Tamworth

· 2020-07-16 · Mr Charles Leung gave a brief presentation of

CPC Annual Report 15

Committee of Management Report

Committee of Management Susan Quay

Secretary

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:10) God has shown His love and faithfulness to us in the past year, demonstrating His sovereignty over all matters at our church. His blessing is abundant for which we give Him praise and glory. The Committee of Management comprises members of the Session plus elected congregational representatives. A Standing Committee comprising the Chairman, Session Clerk, Secretary, Treasurer, Administrator and Property & Equipment Convenor, with power to co-opt, was appointed at the last COM meeting before Christmas. They were authorised to deal with emergency matters which may arise over the Christmas / New Year period until the next Committee meeting on 28 February, 2020. Meeting The Annual Congregational Meeting was held at 10.30am on 31 March 2019. The Committee’s year commenced with the first committee meeting held on 26 April 2019 and the last committee meeting on 28 February 2020. An extraordinary committee meeting was held on 07 July 2019 to discuss the burglary on 26 June and approve appropriate measures to repair and protect the premises. A Standing Committee meeting was held on 05 January 2020 to approve the replacement of the instant hot water system in the Main Kitchen, update the two computers in the Office and for the Property Subcommittee to start the process of getting 11 Lang Street Croydon ready for rental. Highlights from the Committee’s Minute Book

● The owner of 398 Crown Street approached CPC to see if we were interested in purchasing his property. Some subcommittee members met with the neighbour, however his price expectations were far above the valuation we received.

● The Lunch and Hospitality subcommittee organised a special lunch box for the Anniversary Service. New catering arrangements enabled brothers and sisters to enjoy the service and worship and fellowship in full.

● On 26 June 2019 thieves broke in via the construction site at 8-10 Fitzroy Place, and escaped with a TV from room 301 via the driveway, over both the gates. It was reported to police and a claim made to our insurers.

● A Combined Church Camp was held on 5-7 October at The Collaroy Centre. Our speaker was Rev Lawrence Fung of Gospel Operation International. Total registration was 359 (adults and children); 230 full time and 129 part time. The Ruth Chao Fund was used to cover the expenses of the speaker and helpers. Thanks to the Camp committee, who were from all congregations: Ken Wong (Convenor), Robert Lam, Burgess Wong and Phillip Yu.

● The Workplace, Health and Safety subcommittee reviewed the Fire Safety and Fire Evacuation Policy and fire detection/warning system. They are in the process of

11 Lang

Street, Croydon

8-10 Fitzroy

ensuring we are fully prepared for emergencies. On 16 November on-site fire safety training was held for representatives from various ministry groups.

● SMBC have vacated the property at 11 Lang Street Croydon and the Committee is looking to engage an agent to manage renting out the church manse.

Finance The Finance team ensured our finances were kept up to date and resources were used efficiently to further God’s kingdom. Some highlights:

● the upgrade of the accounting software from MYOB to XERO was completed resulting in more timely financial reporting

● CPC's payroll functions were outsourced to the Presbyterian Church of NSW, which offers a free-of-charge comprehensive payroll service to all Presbyterian churches

● Manse Allowance to be kept at $29,000 in 2019 ● CPC continued its support of theological students.

William Xu graduated from the Chinese Theological College Australia Inc and joined the Pastoral Team in July 2019

● Total freewill offerings and other income for the year was $975,350, which after expenses resulted in a net surplus of $18,396

● We received bequests from the late Marilyn Cheung for the Missions Fund and the Benevolent Fund.

Online Offertory as a percentage of Total Offertory has dropped from 72% in 2018 down to 68% in 2019. We continue to encourage more members to use this free, convenient, effective and regular service. Please contact the church office for account details or assistance. Specific Purpose Funds Offertory from all Easter Services went to the Benevolent Fund, to be used for payments to those in need, at the Pastoral Team’s discretion. The Christmas services’ offertories were directed towards the Presbyterian Church's mercy ministry arm, Jericho Road. A total of $9,324 was collected for that charity. The faithful and generous support of members is gratefully acknowledged. Property & Equipment The Property & Equipment subcommittee worked tirelessly throughout the year. The work of this subcommittee, of general maintenance and improvements on the church buildings, is both critical and greatly appreciated by the entire congregation, staff and ministry groups. The amount of maintenance work and improvements they have made on the church buildings are too numerous to list, however some highlights of the work completed this year include:

● Roof to the Fellowship Hall replaced ● Repair / replace broken slate tiles to the Auditorium and

Worship Centre ● Replace kitchen door ● Replace carpets in caretaker’s rooms

Phillip Yu。

11 Lang

Street, Croydon

Cantonese Ministries Committee Report

Elder Peter Yeung

In 2019, we are very grateful for the pastoral team under the leadership of Rev. Chris Chan, also with the assistance of Rev. Andrew Choy, Pastor Dorothy Choi, elders and leaders from various departments, who faithfully and lovingly served and cared for the congregation. The first batch of the discipleship training students have completed their course. We are grateful and delighted for their past 2½ years of studies. Brothers and sisters have participated in the Tamworth short term mission, university outreach programs and home fellowship-based evangelistic events to proclaim the Gospel. We also had the Men’s camp follow up meeting this year to let our brothers share about the changes in their lives. CMC has started to pray and think about how to simplify our ministry structures, so that brothers and sisters can be more conscious about their spiritual direction – that is to be God’s disciples, and to be more focused on learning and practising in this area.

Discipleship Training The first group of 15 students & leaders have graduated from the discipleship training. Praise God for the past 2 ½ years of learning and practising together. Our graduates will share their mission of being disciples with others especially in where they serve. Five graduates have taken up the role of group leaders in the new discipleship training groups. We are so grateful that the mission of making disciples is continuing. 16 brothers and sisters have started their training in the third group, while the students from the second group are continuing their studies to experience God’s faithfulness and grace.

New Members Praise the Lord that during 2019, 4 brothers and sisters were baptized and became members of the church. There was 1 membership transfer. We thank God for moving brothers and sisters to commit in Him. May the Lord bless each one of them that they will continue to grow healthily in this spiritual home!

God Calls His Servants During the year we have 3 brothers answered the call of God to begin their theological training and to prepare for the service of our Lord in future: Raymond Wong, Anthony Tang and Felix Siu. We praise God for the 3 brothers’ willing heart and pray that they will be enabled by the Lord to deeply experience Him.

Evangelism and Outreach Praise the Lord that in 2019 we have reached out to more than 200 non-believers via various gatherings and activities, who have been able to get in touch with the gospel at different levels. This year we have organized evangelistic meetings in various forms, e.g., welcoming night by students, outings, life topics talks, Chinese New Year evangelistic movie afternoon tea, leisure evangelistic lunch meeting, annual Christmas dinner, Christianity Explained classes and nurturing classes. Students also had their outreach activities in the universities. Praise the Lord that our brothers and sisters are living out the Great Commission. May the Lord greatly encourage us in the coming year to live out the likeness of Christ in all aspects of life, and witness His love.

Tamworth

CPC Annual Report 21

Worship Service and Welcoming The average attendance at the 10:30 a.m. service this year was 192 which saw a small increase over last year. We thank the Lord for bringing newcomers to CPC. Pray that the Lord would help them settle in the CPC family and we can worship and serve together. A total of 173 newcomers came to CPC this year. Apart from 83 overseas visitors, 53 newcomers were students. Of the remaining newcomers, about 40% had continued to attend CPC, with 2 already starting to serve. We thank the Lord that the welcoming team has followed up the newcomers faithfully. We pray that the Lord will help us welcome and look after the newcomers and share the Lord’s love with them.

Language School The CPC Language School celebrated its 51st anniversary in 2019. What a milestone! It is a living testimony of how God has been faithful in raising up people to serve him by providing excellent language education to many generations of children in the past half-century. Under the leadership of the Principal, Karen Law, alongside her team of trusted advisors, abled assistants and diligent teachers, the Language School was able to deliver in 2019 an outstanding program of language education as well as extra-curricular activities including drawing and dancing. There were a number of new enrolments as the new school term began last year. We trust that the labour in the Lord is not in vain. May God be glorified!

Prayer Life Praise the Lord that we have an average attendance of 8 to 10 in each of the five suburban prayer fellowship groups, a slight drop from last year though. Pray that God will lead brothers and sisters into a revival of our prayer lives. Brothers and sisters also attended some church-wide combined prayer meetings held on Sunday afternoons following the Cantonese service.

Adult Christian Education This year God has given us a lot of opportunities to learn from the Bible: Genesis (Mrs Jane Poon), 1 John (Dr Devin Yu), Spiritual Growth (Rev Andrew Choy). We have also completed the second and third modules of “The Life of Christ” with over 10 brothers and sisters participating. Pray that brothers’ and sisters’ desire for God’s Word will lead them to enjoy the amazing power and beauty of the Bible.

Seniors’ Ministry, PWA & Men’s Fellowship and Visitation Praise the Lord that He is faithful and continues to enable our seniors to meet every Sunday morning for bible studies and fellowship. We studied the books of Ecclesiastes, 1 and 2 Thessalonians last year and we are currently studying Jeremiah. We welcomed Christine Wu, Margaret Lee, Bonnie Wong and Alan Lee as our co-workers. While our seniors are facing the challenge of declining health and reduced mobility, we encourage them to care for each other through phone calls and visitations. We also encourage them to uphold the church community through prayers. Please pray for them to have the assurance of faith in Christ and they will continue to witness the Lord through their lives and have the Lord as their joy in life. Ministering to seniors at PWA and Men’s fellowship is challenging while some of our Committee are unwell including our President, Irene Lu. We pray for their recovery. Many existing & new committee members have stepped up to take on more ministry and they grow

accordingly. We visit members who are in nursing homes and not able to come to church regularly. We learned to share the gospel in a very simple way in order to share the gospel with friends who are yet to know Jesus. With smaller grouping in time of discussion and prayer, we are able to share more deeply with one another. The highlight of the year was definitely the coach tour down the south coast and we thank the Lord for the fellowship and the fun together. Pray that our seniors are encouraged to be Jesus’ disciples despite their ages.

Fellowships and Home Fellowship We thank the Lord for His guidance and blessing throughout last year. The student ministry continues to serve the Lord on campus and other areas in spreading the Gospel among students. The Lord did not only bless the ministry with increasing numbers, but the student members also grew spiritually via Bible studies, sharing within the fellowship as well as other brothers and sisters in the church. By serving in the worship services, audio visual control, lunch preparation and various other roles, students could be engaged more and more in church life and learn how to be the Lord’s disciples in their daily lives. Pray to the Lord that our leaders and fellowship members will grow in Him. Pray that when the overseas students return to their homeland, they will continue to grow in Christ and they will continue to spread the Gospel. Attendance in the workers’ group has been steady this year. A number of newcomers joined the group and we learnt via the Alpha course as well as being God’s disciples. 15 Home Fellowship groups across the suburbs do bible studies and provide pastoral care for our congregation. We began a series of studies on the theme of discipleship. Being disciples is not for the elite or those in the discipleship groups but for all of us. And that is the mandate in the Great Commission. Studying it in home groups setting enables members to learn the Word, to encourage one another and to apply the biblical truth practically. Home Fellowship leaders also had contributed in preparation of study material and shared the vision of being disciples within the group.

Looking ahead The Ministry Committee (CMC) continues to look to the Lord for wisdom and strength. In the coming year, we need to explore opportunities to simplify the ministry structure, so that brothers and sisters within the congregation can, in the next one to three years, focus on learning to be the Lord’s disciples. “We proclaim Him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.” (Colossians 1:28)

Elder Phillip Lowe

In 2019, English Ministries were affected by changes to the Pastoral Team, as Pastor Jonathan Chong left CPC in January to serve the Lord in another Presbyterian church in Sydney. Rev. Thomas Wall was responsible for pastoral oversight and worked closely with the elders ensuring the spiritual and pastoral needs of our members of all generations were satisfied. Above all, giving glory to God in the way we live our lives and be a witness for Him in all things. The English Ministries Committee (EMC) was re-established from a combination of elders and members who already had various leadership roles in ministry at CPC. Naomi Guo, Ben Johnston, Charles Leung, Monica Ling, Warren G. Lowe, Susan Quay, Ken Wong, and elders forming the committee supporting Tom in serving and leading. We are thankful to God for calling faithful leaders to serve His family at CPC and the local community. The leaders of each group are ever thankful to the Lord for His presence amongst all who visit and attend their groups. EMC oversees the 9am Family English Service, 4pm English Service, Sunday School (9am and 10:30am), CPC Youth Alive (CYA), CYA+ (Friday), Ignite, Adult Seminars, Living Word, Women’s Ministry, Men’s ministry, short term missions such as the Tamworth Country Mission, various other fellowships meeting on Sunday and during the week and some external groups our members participate in. 9am Family Service and 4pm English Service The 9am Family Service provides members a place to worship and praise God, learn how to live a practical Christian life, invite family and friends to hear the gospel and an opportunity to serve one another. We praise God for consistently great music in our weekly worship service and special events such as camps, Easter, Christmas and Anniversary services. Music is a key ministry in enhancing the worship atmosphere and complements the sermon message. The music ministry provides a great opportunity for our young members to offer, as a service to Him, the musical skills they have acquired through hours of private lessons & practise. A special word of thanks goes to the hard working five Worship In Songs teams led and coordinated by our Music Director, Scila Seah. We are thankful to Charles Leung and his AV Team who offer their technical skills in operating the audio-visual equipment and computers which allows us to both hear and see more clearly those that lead in the worship. We also thank Colin Lim who coordinated the team that presented Children’s Talks in each worship service and acknowledge all the time and thought put into the slides and props. In their presentations they capture and simplify the sermon message for both the children and adults. Every Sunday, inserted in the Weekly Order of Service, is the Family News which contains many varied and interesting articles, announcements, encouragement across the whole spectrum of family worship, fellowship and personal reflection. For this, we are very thankful for the faithful behind the scene service of Jessica Lowe, Wilfred Wong and support volunteers.

(Family

News),

Jessica

Lowe、

CPC Annual Report 25

The 4pm Evening Service continues to be a fruitful ministry at CPC for the faithful saints who attend. With the departure of Pastor Jonathan in January, the congregation was overseen by Rev. Chris Chan and Rev. Thomas Wall who share in the duties of preaching and pastoral care throughout the year. During October, there was an evangelistic month where Rev. Jeremy Tan and Rev. David Cook came as guest speakers to preach the Gospel. The average attendance at Evening Service was 31 adults. There were a number of babies born during the year which the church is most thankful for God’s blessings upon those families. During the year, six people were baptised/confirmed and became church members. Two of these members were baptised in the Collaroy pool at the combined CPC Church Camp. Serving at the Evening Service continues to be provided by a number of our talented congregation members in the area of music, praying, chairing, welcoming and Bible reading etc. The EMC wishes to express its sincere thanks to all involved in serving in their various capacities. As a congregation, we considered how individual spiritual gifts can be identified in serving one another. We also reflected on the topic of rebuking, inviting Emmelyn Chong to run a series of workshops. Two Gospel Community (Bible Study) groups met regularly each Sunday before Church. These groups were led by faithful leaders and were well attended by many people from the Evening Service. There were also Gospel Clusters (small prayer groups) that met regularly throughout the week. Pre-evangelistic events were held during the year to invite friends and family, hoping to get them connected into church. Members often go out to dinner together each Sunday after the service to build community and connection. Welcoming and Baptism/Confirmation We welcome visitors to CPC and support their integration into the CPC community. Visitors are recognised by a name tag to wear during the day, their details are recorded and they are presented a CPC booklet with a flyer insert giving details of the Sunday timetable, church layout and summary of activities CPC offers. An official letter of welcoming is sent to them from the Pastoral Team. The Welcoming Team set up every Sunday to greet newcomers and visitors and are able to call upon members of the congregation to assist in any friends/relatives they bring to Church to follow-up. Welcoming is for members of the congregation who have an interest in serving the church, in expressing their faith and being able to share the gospel of Christ to someone who is seeking to know. Of great encouragement was the baptism of several youth, acknowledging the importance of God in their lives. May we pray for the families and church members who have committed themselves to God. Sunday School In Matthew 19 Jesus says “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Sunday School provides an opportunity to tell our children the most precious news they will ever hear, because we just don’t know what will happen in the future. They might stay with the church and become involved in ministry. They may go out to the

Collaroy

world and become plumbers or doctors or missionaries. Or they may get distracted by the world and move away from church. This is our chance to tell them the truth about the gospel, that they may act on now, or they recall later in life when times are tough. Children’s talks are presented at 9.00am English Service and repeated at 10.30am Cantonese Service. They focus on one point from the sermon bible passage in a simple message for children. From September 2019, a children’s talk was introduced into the Mandarin Service on the first Sunday of each month. As part of G2G stage 3, a creche was set-up in room 301, with a direct video link from the Auditorium. It has provided a safe space for babies and young children to play, sleep or be fed, with a sink and microwave facilities. We had three babies at 9.00am and two at 10.30am. Sunday School runs two sessions during school terms, in line with the worship services at 9.00am and 10.30am. A separate program is run during the school holidays. During 2019, the 9.00am Sunday School had an average of 44 students, with children joining the younger classes mainly from the Mandarin congregation. 10.30am Sunday School had an average of 50 students. Our holiday programs had an average of 30 students in each. The 10.30am Sunday School, kindergarten to year 6 students, visited Gertrude Abbott Aged Care at Easter and Christmas, singing to residents, staff and visitors, and were always well received. Our aim is to show the children that we should be aware of those around us, and that everyone needs to know about God’s love for them by sending Jesus, no matter their age or nationality. We acknowledge the love and dedication of those who serve in the children’s ministry through Sunday School and their care for each child, through participation in assembly, faithful preparation of lessons and prayer. Please pray that God’s word will continue to be taught, so that our children understand and come to know God’s love, and then to live it every day. Pray that many, of all generations, will be touched by this ministry and feel called to be involved. Adult Seminars and Living Word These groups continue to be encouraged through regular fellowship catering for their specific needs. The groups are formed from members who were seeking to study God’s Word, and connect with other Christians in all stages and challenges of life. Regular weekly Bible studies prepared by the Pastoral Team discussing the sermon message, scripture passage and other topical subjects relevant to our daily lives, and encourage each other through God’s Word. As Christians experiencing similar life challenges, with a desire to study and reflect on God’s word, together we support and strengthen each other. In doing so, we are able to disciple each other, and live out the Word of God in our daily lives. Living Word are bible study groups that meet on Sunday morning between 11am – 12 noon. There are between 40 – 50 members with three bible study groups, following the sermon series. This provides members with an opportunity to explore the passage through sharing and discussion, helping each other relate to what

the passage means to our daily lives. From time to time socials provide a time for fellowship. The name “Living Word” seeks to capture the purpose of our groups, that we are saved by and we live by the Word of God. Meeting together to disciple, encourage and support each other, seeking to put God’s Word into our lives. It has the largest span of ages of any fellowship group, members from young workers, young adults, couples and parents. The group covers a wide range of life stages, those just entering the workforce, those starting new households or new families, those with young children starting school for the first time, or with high schoolers and teenage children. Living Word also serves as a support to members who actively serve throughout the church. Many of our members contribute to the wider ministries of CPC, such as Sunday School, worship leading, Committee of Management, home groups, outreach evangelism and ministry committees. Ignite The fellowship provides a community for the tertiary aged demographic to meet together to study God’s word each week. Bible studies were run in various formats, with 2 groups led by Andrew Liu and Naomi Guo. A core of 20 members hold Bible studies in a mixed and all female group format. With guided study leading, the aim was to develop a sense of community and growing in the knowledge and love of Christ. And importantly, to foster a connection between members and engaging in cross fellowship activities. At the end of the year Naomi left CPC to assist in the growth of another Presbyterian church. We thank her for her leadership at CPC and God’s blessings in future ministries. CYA (Sunday) and CYA+ (Friday) CPC Youth Alive (CYA) meets both on Sunday mornings and CYA+ meets on the first and third Friday of the month bringing together youth from all CPC Congregations with an approximate regular weekly attendance of 10-15 youth. In 2019, Charles and Helena Leung accepted the challenge of leading CYA+, mentoring the young leadership team and developing the teenage youth as the group met offsite in their home. The change of location and environment allowed the opportunity to provide foster deeper friendship/relationship with a focus on Colossians 2:6-8 as the theme. The fellowship group added year 7 youth, an important high school group to reach out to and nurture. CYA is a Sunday group of 40 youth with 4 life groups (junior boys/girls and senior boys/girls), each life group having 2-3 leaders. Vision for 2019 was: Youth to take ownership of their: • Relationship with Jesus (Ephesians 2:8-9)

There was an organised brunch event held at CPC in May with Caroline Spencer from City Bible Forum helping to equip women on how to share the Gospel with others. This was a pre-evangelism workshop with a few people attending and was an encouraging time for all who went along. There was also a High Tea event held in September with over 70 attendees where again, Caroline Spencer came and gave a good evangelistic talk. We would like to thank all on the Women’s Ministry Committee for their time and efforts in organising these events.

STM Country Mission - Tamworth CPC continues to lead in this valuable ministry with its team members made up of many different churches. The leadership group comprised members of CPC which was overseen by Rev. Thomas Wall. The team began a new 3 year cycle by going to Tamworth. It was wonderful to see people from all our congregations at CPC be involved in mission. Everyone on the team could see the spirit of the Lord working in and amongst us. The aim of Country Mission is to support smaller country churches in doing outreach and evangelism, but it also helps CPC connect amongst congregations and how we as a team have benefited in seeing people’s faith grow and bear fruit, being more bold in gospel practices and in our own prayer lives. Pray that the elders and leaders of English Ministries will continue to exercise godly wisdom in making decisions and in leading the people God has entrusted to their care. Give thanks for the blessings God has bestowed on all members and visitors who have become regular attendees to CPC, and their continuing spiritual growth. Thanks & Appreciation We thank Rev. Chris Chan and Rev. Thomas Wall for their faithful service and leadership of the English Ministry. Their encouragement has been valuable and much appreciated. Discipling, serving, praising and growing together in the Lord is the greatest of blessings. We are deeply thankful to God for this treasure of the gospel of Christ: this message concerning Jesus, who did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but took on the form of a servant and humbled Himself to death on a cross, before God exalted Him to the highest place.

Mandarin Ministries Committee Report

Elder Tom Tjanaria

We give thanks to God for 2019. It has been a very challenging year for our Mandarin congregation however, God’s grace is always sufficient for us. We as a congregation grew together more closely and many people took up more roles and responsibilities in the Lord, which exceeded our expectation. Origin of Vision: Matthew 28:18-20 NIV Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” • All the authority…has been given to us

Even though we did not have a full time Minister last year, we clearly know that God has already given us His authority and for us to exercise His power to serve Him.

• Go and make disciples of all nations

We indeed, “go” and focused on the goal of “discipleship”, even though we were still on the stage seeking on “how to implement” practically. We intentionally “go” towards the goal as a Spiritual team in 2019.

Review of Ministries In the seeking of implementing the vision of disciple-making practically, we all agree that the prayer is the essential path. Therefore, we urged brothers and sisters to pray more deeply by attending the CPC monthly prayer meetings and weekly prayer meetings before Mandarin Service. In prayers, we sought clearer guidance from God and asked Him for direction towards the needs for the Church. We have been in contact with the many newcomers who have visited our service, creating opportunities to get to know them, introducing them to our church and sharing the Gospel with them. Although we still face the challenge in the turnover rate, we hope that our contact with them would make the Gospel proclaimed. For this reason, we hold a Seeker Class and another class teaching the Gospel of Mark in way of discussion so that the attendees would gradually become true disciples with commitment to His church through deeper knowing of Christ. Every Sunday, we ran Bible Study groups for different ages. We were also thankful that there were some brothers and

sisters willing to become bible study leaders. The Young Workers Group had a difficult time throughout the year as there were great impact on members due to some of them leaving for various reasons. There was great need in pastoral care and support for them and our prayer is that God would strengthen their mind and raise up more young people to be the core of the church. In Student Ministry, EMBS was bringing in students from China with weekly activities on Friday and trying to reach out more widely in the UNSW campus. Whereas it brought them extra challenges with the changes of trimester in the University as well as unexpected mobility in the student committee but amazing encouragement and restoration came when they were having the annual Recharge Camp for Christian students and the Gospel Camp for the non-believers. Thanks to our Lord for the spiritual fruit displayed through EMBS that many of these university students were willing to join our Mandarin Congregation. We are very thankful but we still consider this group as a Missionary Ministry as most of the students will go back to China when they graduate. We wish to train them up to become mature disciples so that they can be the seed of Gospel and bear fruit for Christ wherever they are. The Life of Christ classes in Mandarin continued in 2019 with around 10 brothers and sisters committed and all were rewarded with a more systematical understanding and application of the Scriptures. There were some who were unable to continue for different reasons but by the end of 2019, we managed to finish the fourth booklet and there will be 8 students continuing on the rest of the course heading into 2020. We need to pray for protection and guidance from God, so this course would be most beneficial for the students and even to the whole church to grow together spiritually. We had groups running within the weekly groups such as Dandelion and Zion and monthly Groups in Eastern and Southern Suburbs. Dandelion has people of a variety of different ages, levels of faith, even different church backgrounds but having the same aim which is to equip themselves in the Scripture. The Zion group is made up of mainly young couples, families and elderly families for monthly meetings in different districts, but it has been encouraging seeing them gathering for the same purpose. For Holy Music Ministry, our Worship Team gathers to practice for Sunday’s praise-in-song every Saturday. Furthermore, they have sharing and fellowship afterwards to build up the relationship of the team. This has had a significant effect for our Sunday service. Besides the Worship In Songs, we also have our Choir. Although it is not on every Sunday, they insist on practicing their singing every week and even coming with a new emerging force of young children. We were grateful for their commitment as

the presence encourages the congregation a lot. Indeed, we praise God because He has blessed us with a younger generation of believers. With the help of our Sunday School team in serving and witnessing the growth and development of our next generation, we started a brand new ministry of Mandarin Children’s talks in 2019. Conclusion In these Mandarin Groups and Ministries, we would like to emphasize a few points. Firstly, it is the life of prayer including the personal and group ones that we see God working amongst us. Secondly, it comes with the knowledge and application of the Scripture. What is more, it is essential to build up the intimate relationship between one another. That is why we are eager to have One-on-One and Discipleship Groups apart from those ministries above. Although these groups and ministries are in many different ways, the goal is all the same, which is to intentionally grow ourselves to be more mature disciples and disciple others as well so may we shine out the glory of Christ. In 2019, we walked through a journey full of challenges and hardship. However, we really want to thank and praise God for what we have experienced in Him as still He cares and walks with us. And we are looking upon Him and committing the new year in His Hand, knowing that He would guide us to go forward more clearly in the Vision shown to us.

Elder Ernest Chong

Remember the story of the two sons told by Jesus in the Bible? - one agreed to work for his father but did not go, the other refused initially, but changed his mind and went to work in his dad’s vineyard. “Which of the two did the will of his father?” Jesus asked.

Let’s try to answer the same question in our own lives – being a child of God, did I really do the will of my heavenly Father?

The Great Commission, to love one another, united in one body, seek ye first the Kingdom of God... etc.

2019 was indeed a challenging year for our missionaries and their families. Besides illness, some of them had to leave the field for various reasons. In such difficult and seemingly helpless times, we learn to trust the Lord more, continuing to pray for and committing them to God.

We thank God for Wayne Tso serving with AFES in Newcastle as well as Carey and Heidi Cheung serving in Africa starting from 2019.

Also, some of our missionaries, Sharon Law, Tim & Rebecca Campbell, Kym & Steph Schwarz returned home to share with us. Patrick Fung preached and encouraged us during his Home Assignment. Kit Ng shared about her current AFES work at UWS.

Kim Chen shared about her plan to serve in a new area in South East Asia starting 2020.

How will you and I, fellow CPCers support the Gospel ministries locally and overseas, financially and in person? More importantly, do we set our mind to do God’s will (even if we did not agree to in the first place)?

Would you like to find out more? About the work of our missionaries in the fields? Would you like to participate in mission work? Would you like to join the Missionary Committee?

Please contact the Missionary Committee, ministers, pastors and elders if you are willing and need more information.

Heidi Cheung
