Welcome to our Chinese NewYear Celebrations 2016.

The Year of the Monkey will officiallybegin on Monday 8 February, butbefore then we’ll be welcoming twowonderful Chinese artists fromChongqing and Ningbo to Nottinghamto work with a broad range ofcommunity groups, special interestgroups, schools, universities and thegeneral public.

Traditionally a family celebration, weinvite individuals, friends and families to come together and enjoy theexhibition, workshops, and performancesculminating with a celebrated fireworksfinale at Highfields Park.

CHINESE LANTERN PARADEPupils from Roundhill Primary School will be workingwith artist, Sarah Palmer, to create Chinese lanternsthat will be displayed and paraded at the BeestonSquare event.

JIANG HONGSHENG IN RESIDENCEJiang Hongsheng (Jack) is an artist and teacher in the traditional Chinese arts of brush painting andcalligraphy. A Master of English Education fromZhejiang Normal University, he was a teacher ofEnglish for 22 years before developing his art skillsworking under Master of Art, Yu Yiqing. In 2012 waspresented with a National Golden Prize for ChinesePainting. He is based in Nottingham’s twin city Ningbowhere he founded the Red Peony Academy of ChinesePainting and Calligraphy at the Ningbo Library. Jackteaches international visitors about Chinese culturethrough these ancient art forms and to date he haswelcomed visitors from 150 different countries.

TRADITIONALCHINESE BRUSHPAINTING ANDCALLIGRAPHY BYJIANG HONGSHENGThis specially selected exhibition of traditionalChinese art has been curated from the work ofour resident visual artist, Jiang Hongsheng(Jack), from Ningbo. It will include scrollsfeaturing some of the iconic elements ofChinese art, as well as examples of hiscalligraphy. Since 2012 Jiang Hongsheng hasbeen teaching visitors to China about Chineseculture through the medium of visual art. Manyof the items on display will also be for sale andavailable to take away following completion ofthe exhibition. For details please ask at NLA’sBox Office, next to the Wallner Gallery.

RONG TAO IN RESIDENCERong Tao is a choreographerand dance artist with a richprofessional career. He wasPrincipal Dancer with both theGuandong and Beijing ModernDance Companies; he has alsobeen Assistant Professor ofDance at the University ofChongqing, and Choreographerat the Chongqing Meishi FilmAcademy.

He is also the foundingChoreographer of the YuWuDance Project, providing aplatform for emerging youngdancers and also working withdifferent abilities within thecommunity. This will be his fifthvisit to Nottingham LakesideArts to help celebrate ChineseNew Year by working inpartnership with a range ofdance groups in Nottinghamand in Loughborough; he willalso be collaborating with thevisual artist Jian Hongshengwith whom he shares a veryparticular interest as his work isinspired by calligraphy.

During his residency Rong Taowill be making new work withthe dancers of New CollegeNottingham, at Oak FieldSchool, with Push DanceCollective, NottinghamChinese Folk Dance Group,and visiting a number ofdifferent schools in the city tointroduce the children totraditional and contemporarystyles of Chinese dance. InLoughborough he will beworking with Charnwood Artsand Loughborough Collegestudents, as well as FuelledDance Theatre.
