Spring Festival widely known as Chinese New Year in the west is the most important traditional festival and a public holiday in China The Spring Festival 2012 starts January 22 (Chinese New Years Eve) 2012 is the year of dragon

The festival falls on the first day of the first lunar month (usually in late January and early February) and ends with Lantern Festival which is on the 15th day The

New Year celebrations may begin one or two days before the festival

The festival is celebrated grandly across country with various cultural activities

Modern wheat isnt really wheat a best-selling author explains

Take everything youve heard about whole wheat and throw it out the window Its not a health food its making you fat and your digestive tract hates you for eating it according to the author of the

New York Times best-selling book Wheat Belly Lose the Wheat Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health (Rodale 2011)

So howmdashand whenmdashdid this ancient grain become such a serious health threat Author and preventive cardiologist William Davis MD says its when big agriculture stepped in decades ago to develop a higher-yielding crop Todays wheat he says isnt even wheat thanks to some of the most intense crossbreeding efforts ever seen The wheat products sold to you today are nothing like the wheat products of our grandmothers age very different from the wheat of the early 20th Century and completely transformed from the wheat of the Bible and earlier he says

Plant breeders changed wheat in dramatic ways Once more than four feet tall modern wheatmdashthe type grown in 99 percent of wheat fields around the worldmdashis now a stocky two-foot-tall plant with an unusually large seed head Dr Davis says accomplishing this involved crossing wheat with non-wheat grasses to introduce altogether new genes using techniques like irradiation of wheat seeds and embryos with chemicals gamma rays and high-dose X-rays to induce mutations

Clearfield Wheat grown on nearly 1 million acres in the Pacific Northwest and sold by BASF Corporationmdashthe worlds largest chemical manufacturermdashwas created in a geneticists lab by exposing wheat seeds and embryos to the mutation-inducing industrial toxin sodium azide a substance poisonous to humans and known for exploding when mishandled says Dr Davis This hybridized wheat doesnt survive in the wild and most farmers rely on toxic chemical fertilizers and pesticides to keep the crops alive (Its important to note however that the intensive breeding efforts that have so dramatically transformed wheat should not to be confused with genetic engineering of food or GMOs This type of technology has its own set of problems though)

Danger of Genetically Modified Foods

New research shows that when we eat were consuming more than just vita-

mins and protein Our bodies are absorbing information or microRNA

Chinese researchers have found small pieces of rice ribonucleic acid (RNA)

in the blood and organs of humans who eat rice The Nanjing University-

based team showed that this genetic material will bind to receptors in

human liver cells and influence the uptake of cholesterol from the blood

The type of RNA in question is called microRNA (abbreviated to miRNA)

due to its small size MiRNAs have been studied extensively since their

discovery ten years ago and have been implicated as players in several

human diseases including cancer Alzheimers and diabetes They usually

function by turning down or shutting down certain genes The Chinese

research provides the first in vivo example of ingested plant miRNA

surviving digestion and influencing human cell function in this way

Should the research survive scientific scrutiny -- a serious hurdle -- it could

prove a game changer in many fields It would mean that were eating not

just vitamins protein and fuel but gene regulators as well That knowledge

could deepen our understanding of many fields including cross-species

communication co-evolution and predator-prey relationships It could

illuminate new mechanisms for some metabolic disorders and perhaps

explain how some herbal and modern medicines function

This study had nothing to do with genetically modified (GM) food but it

could have implications on that front The work shows a pathway by which

new food products such as GM foods could influence human health in

previously unanticipated ways

Monsantos website states There is no need for or value in testing the

safety of GM foods in humans This viewpoint while good for business is

built on an understanding of genetics circa 1960 It follows whats called the

Central Dogma of genetics which postulates a one-way chain of

command between DNA and the cells DNA governs

WASHINGTON mdash To head off medical conflicts of interest the Obama administration is poised to require drug companies to disclose the payments they make to doctors for research consult-ing speaking travel and entertainment Many researchers have found evidence that such payments can influence doctorsrsquo treatment decisions and contribute to higher costs by encouraging the use of more expensive drugs and medical devices Consumer advocates and members of Congress say patients may benefit from the new standards being issued by the government under the new health care law Officials said the disclosures increased the likelihood that doctors would make decisions in the best interests of patients without regard to the doctorsrsquo financial interests Large numbers of doctors receive payments from drug and device companies every year - sometimes into the hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars - in exchange for providing advice and giving lectures Analyses by The New York Times and others have found that about a quarter of doctors take cash payments from drug or device makers and that nearly two-thirds accept routine gifts of food including lunch for staff members and dinner for themselves The Times has found that doctors who take money from drug makers often practice medicine differently from those who do not and that they are more willing to prescribe drugs in risky and unapproved ways such as prescribing powerful antipsychotic medicines for children Under the new standards if a company has just one product covered by Medicare or Medicaid it will have to disclose all its payments to doctors other than its own employees The federal government will post the payment data on a Web site where it will be available to the public Manufacturers of prescription drugs and devices will have to report if they pay a doctor to help develop assess and promote new products The Obama administration estimates that more than 1100 drug device and medical supply companies will have to file reports generating ldquolarge amounts of new datardquo Consumer advocates have long demanded details of the financial ties between doctors and drug and device companies Read more at The New York Times

Hungary Destroys All Monsanto GMO Corn Fields

In March Hungary introduced a new regulation that states seeds must be checked for GMO before they are introduced to the market However some GMO seeds made it to the farmers without their being aware of it

As a result almost 1000 acres of maize found to have been grown with genetically modified seeds have been destroyed throughout Hungary The deputy state secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development Lajos Bognar said that the GMO maize has been ploughed under and pollen has not spread from the maize

Planetsave reports Unlike several EU members GMO seeds are banned in Hungary The checks will continue despite the fact that seed traders are obliged to make sure that their products are GMO freerdquo

The United States meanwhile is beginning to see the consequences of widely planted GMOs In the mid-90s Monsanto introduced seeds genetically engineered to withstand its Roundup brand of herbicide Today these Roundup Ready crops are planted all across the US -- 94 percent of soybeans and more than 70 percent of corn and cotton contain the Roundup-resistant gene

But when the land is dosed with a single herbicide for years on end the ecosystems adapt Roundup-defying superweeds are getting out of control And the problem is only accelerating because the resistant weeds are driving out their non-resistant counterparts
