Rise and fall of the Zhou
1050 B.C. Zhou attacked the Shang kingdom new dynasty over 800 years.
Zhou gained power because the Shang kings had grown corrupt.
Shang warriors surrendered and accepted the Zhou king as their new ruler.
Heaven was the highest force of nature that gave dynasties the right to rule and that was the Mandate of Heaven.
To stay in power rulers be kind to serve the interests of the people.
Uprisings and natural disasters omens had lost the Mandate of Heaven.
Governing the Zhou The Zhou expanded their land.
A group of nobles tried to overthrow the king.
Warlords are rulers of small states of a empire.
The Warring States China entered a era of chaos.
Chaos is crazy confusion and disorder.
The Warring States Period is a era of chaos.
Loyalty to the empire disappeared and the empire fell.
The last Zhou ruler was killed in 256bc.
A new dynasty united China.
Zhou society The Zhou adopted lots of the Shang culture.
They had the same laws ,similar clothing ,spoke the same language and made bronze art.
The Zhou gave up human sacrifice and stopped using oracle bones.
Structure of society & family relationships
The Zhou kings gave up some power to individual states and the nobles who led them.
Those states set up capital cities.
Most ancient societies were pleasant.
They farmed their land and had to serve as soldiers in the army.
Small numbers of merchants ,artisans ,and slaves.
Slavery was used as punishment.
The older family members had more control and power ,women had a lower status then the men did.
Economy and technology
In their economy and technology they made things like the crossbow, plus iron weapons.
And they made stronger and more effective farm tools
Plus they built a network of roads
Cultural life They have a lot of creative energy.
They look for wise men to help rule.
They made coins in to different shapes.
