COMMUNITY NOTICEBOARD This week in Lavender we launched our topic ‘animal ancs and plant power’. We started by reading and discussing the book The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry, which raises a number of concerns about humans’ treatment of the Amazon Rainforest. Inspired by the animal characters from the story, we used a range of media and techniques to create our own rainforest art. In English we started doing further research into the Amazon Rainforest in preparaon for wring our informave non-chronological reports. This research included comparing the Amazon Rainforest and London. We found that, although there are many differences between the two, there are more similaries than we originally thought! Childrens’ Centre News We have had a jam-packed week in Year 6. On Tuesday, we had a school trip to Lee Green Fire Staon where we undertook a junior cizenship scheme. We met police officers, firefighters, community support officers and wellbeing advisors. The purpose was to get us prepared for living in London as we transion to secondary school. It was such an informave and engaging trip (even though we nearly got blown away by the wind walking to and from the bus stop!) On Wednesday, we had the privilege of having a mentors' tea party. Each Year 6 pupil has their own school mentor (a member of KG staff) who checks in on how we are geng on and helps us. It was an amazing event where we ate copious amounts of cake (made from staff and Year 6 children alike!). We can't wait for our next mentors' event: a pizza party when we have finished our SATS in May! Thanks to this funding, and all the hard work applying for it, we will be adding a stage to the main playground, transforming the lile wood shelter into a dressing up area and transforming the broken down shelter in Year 1 into a KG shop playhouse. The work will take place over the Easter break. Our first work in the playground was Easter 2018 when we transformed the trimtrail. We have come a long way since then thanks to the reless work of the Kelvin Grove community and the PTA. In the past year we have added seang areas, removed fences, added basketball hoops and so on. If you are interested in seeing the progression of the playground work and where we plan to go from here, there are detailed plans and pictures on the wall in the office recepon area. Please connue to support the PTA, whether through bringing in cakes, running a stall at the fair or simply buying raffle ckets. All help, big or small, is welcomed. It is worthy to note that the PTA is only just 3 years old, and look at all that has been accomplished! We should all be very proud. We are delighted to have received word last Friday that we have been awarded almost £10,000 from The National Lottery Community Fund. Thanks to this funding, and all the hard work applying for it, we will be adding a stage to the main playground, transforming the little wood shelter into a dressing up area and transforming the broken down shelter in Year 1 into a KG shop playhouse. The work will take place over the Easter break.

This week we have been reading ‘The Colour Monster’. This is a book all about feelings. We have been talking about how to understand our own feelings, as well as the feelings of others. ‘The Colour Monster’ is a pop-up book, so we have been having a go at making our own pop up cards. We tested out our ideas, and reviewed them as a class. It required a lot of perseverance!

Wednesday for our ‘stay and play’ session.
Jade class have been really enjoying this term’s topic ‘let it grow’. Our experiment into what plants need to grow is 3 weeks in now and our plant without water is not looking too healthy! Our plant without light is fairing a bit better but the leaves are losing colour and the plant is not as healthy as our control plant which receives light and water.
In maths we have been learning about length and how to accurately use a ruler. For English we have been using persuasive writing techniques to write to Mr Hyde to save our school’s trees. We do hope he listens as our trees really do matter to us!
This week in Rising Stars we have started learning about measuring in centimetres. We used 30cm rulers to measure different objects around the classroom and compared our results to see if our measurements were accurate. We then had fun using the rulers to draw lines of different lengths. Eventually we're going to be using a measuring tape to measure much bigger things... watch this space!
Last week the children discovered that a friendly giant had visited the year one playground! He caused a terrible mess so they have been writing instructions so that Mr Moore can trap him. The children have also planted their own beans, which they will be observing over the next weeks.
Who first used fractions? Were they always written in the same way? This week Cobalt class has been exploring fractions. We have learnt how to identify how many parts of a certain whole there are, and really enjoyed using examples of chocolate bars to identify parts of a whole. In English, we have learnt how to develop a character using higher-level vocabulary. The vocabulary generated was fantastic! Lastly, in computing we focused on learning how to use Excel to identify co-ordinates, organise information and carry out calculations. It has been a fantastic week!
Last week was World Book Week and we read the book ‘Izzy Gizmo’, which is a story about a girl inventor. Our teachers chose that story because Friday was International Women’s Day. We learnt about some real female inventors too, including Ann Makosinki. She invented the hollow flashlight which is a special invention because it does not need any electricity or batteries to power it. It only needs the heat from your hand, which is FREE!! She decided to invent the flashlight because her mum couldn’t afford electricity when she was at university and she has shown us how important it is to try to help people.
Thursday was World Book Day and we got to dress up as our favourite book
character. In Ochre Class we had Little Red Riding Hood, Miss Trunchbull,
Joan of Arc and many more. It was so difficult for our teachers to choose a
winning costume so we won a book for our class instead.
