MAHABODHI MAITRI GORLS HOME:

Mahabodhi Maitri Girls Home is a home for girls where they are provided with the facilities to grow healthy with the support of Dhamma. In the Academic year 2014-15 there are 21 girls residing in the hostel. Out of them 9 are studying in 12th standard, 11 are studying in 11th standard and 1 is studying in B.A. 1st semester. The 11th and 12th standard girls are studying in Government Higher Secondary School, Namsai and the B.A. Student is studying in Mahabodhi Lord Buddha College, Namsai. There is a warden to monitor and guide in their study and day to day activities.

Apart from their study every morning and evening regular puja and meditation sessions were conducted.

MAHABODHI MONASTIC INSTITUTE, Namsai

With the blessings of Bada Bhanteji Most Venerable Acharya Buddharakkhita, Aggamaha Saddhamajotika, Ph.D., D. Lit., in the year of 2013, the Mahabodhi Monastic Institute was started with 18 young monks. At present there are altogether 41 monks residing in this institute.

Since the number of monks is growing day by day, the monastic residence donated by Maha Upasaka Chow Pinthika Namchoom and his family members is inadequate to accommodate all. So, we have erected a bamboo and wooden structure for our monks to reside. Now they are happy with their new residence.

33

Page 34: Children’s day celebration: This year children’s day was ... Report 2015.doc · Web viewBoys of Carla home participated in the Drawing and painting, quiz and essay competition

The young monks of Mahabodhi Monastic Institute, Namsai, are getting both monastic and secular education. They go to nearby government school in the morning session for their secular study and afternoon they are getting monastic education in the monastery. Every morning and evening sutta chanting and meditation session are conducted regularly. Apart from that regular Sunday dhamma program is organised in the monastery prayer hall on every Sunday.

The monks are frequently invited by the nearby villagers for their various religious ceremonies, for chanting suttas and dhamma advice.

The young monks are happy with their daily routine and day to day activities. Apart from monastic duties they grow vegetables in the garden. We are getting sufficient green vegetables for our needs.

Along with these activities the institute celebrate all Buddhist events with great zeal and enthusiasm, like Buddha Purnima, Asalha Purnima (Dhammacakka day), Rains Retreat, Pavarana etc. So we wish, one day this institute will become a foremost monastic training institute in whole of India.

4. Mahabodhi Gotami Vihara, Buddhist Monastery of Nuns

One of the significant contributions to the Buddha sasana of Mahabodhi organisation is the establishment of Mahabodhi Gotami Vihara, Buddhist Monastery of Nuns. In the month of February 22 girls from Tripura state joined in the Mahabodhi Gotami Vihara to become nuns in the Theravada monastic tradition. Since there is no constructed structure in our campus we rented a house at Namsai and accommodated these girls with food and all other needs to practice the dhamma. They were living peacefully by observing eight precepts even as lay girls. Mahabodhi provided them all the necessaries for their comfortable living. They came from Tripura and they are not able to speak English language as they manage with their Bangali. There was a lady teacher cum warden to look after and help in marketing, cooking, etc. She taught them English and Hindi languages too.

On the auspicious occasion of sacred Buddha Jayanti celebration, 4 th May 2015, we ordained these girls as Theravada Buddhist nuns in the presence of holy Sangha presided by Most Venerable U Gunavantha Mahathero (Aggamahasaddhammajotika) popularly known as Monglang Bhante at Mahabodhi Vihara Namsai. After their ordination the Mahabodhi Gotami Nunnery has been established at Goju village near Bordumsa in Arunachal Pradesh. They have simple accommodation and meditation room. Beside their monastery is a big Buddha Temple where they go for puja and Dhamma teaching. But this arrangement is not a permanent one. We are looking for a suitable land to put up proper monasteries for monks and nuns.

We, all the monks and members of Mahabodhi organizations would like to thank Maha Upasika Monica Amma for her relentless support to our activities. May all the merits she has gained conduce to her further progress on the path of Nibbana! Also we are ever thankful and grateful to all the Upasakas and Upasikas who are supporting and helping us in practicing, preserving and promoting the Dhamma for the good, welfare and benefits of mankind.

After the opening ceremony the special lectures were given by both the chief guests. Sri Govind Karjol spoke about the 8th fold path which is the way to end our sorrow and the end of sorrow is Nibbana. He emphasized the necessity of middle path in this present generation where people are ignorant and not realizing the value of truth. The noble eight fold has eight parts or factors; Right understanding, right thoughts, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness and right concentration. Sri Jayarama Raje Urs spoke about the four noble truths which are the noble truths of sorrow, its cause, its end and the way to its end. Everything in this world is full of sorrow and the cause of sorrow is craving. In the end the blessings were given by Venerable Ananda Bhante and he gave a discourse on The Buddha’s first sermon Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, which means the establishment of wisdom, or the turning of the wheel of truths. It was preached on the full moon day of July, called Asalha. This sermon was preached to the five ascetics at the Deer Park in Ispatana (now called Sarnath), near Benaras. The Buddha started the sermon by advising them to give up two extremes. These were the enjoyment of sensual pleasure and the torturing of the body (self- indulging and self mortification). He advised against too many sensual pleasures because they were base, worldly, not noble and not helpful for spiritual development. On the other hand, tormenting the body was painful, not noble and also not helpful for spiritual development. After the blessing and discourse there was Sangha dana by Upasakas and Upasikas and the programe concluded by evening chanting of Dhammacakkapavattana Sutta and Dipa puja.
