SPECIAL EVENTS

FREEDOM TO READ WEEK: BOOKFACE! PHOTO CONTEST

February 26 – March 4, 2017Freedom to Read Week is an annual event that encourages Canadians to think about and reaffirm their commitment to intellectual freedom, which is guaranteed them under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

To celebrate Freedom to Read Week, the Welland Public Library will have a Bookface contest. Submit your Bookface to demonstrate just how wonderful it is to be free to read any book that you want! How can you do this? Simply replace your face with a book’s cover and snap a picture; Voilà – your Bookface! Submissions will be accepted February 26 – March 4.

National Poetry Month (NPL) was established by the League of Canadian Poets (LCP) in 1998. Since then, LCP has worked hard to popularize poetry as an art form by creating partnerships and programs across Canada that inspire people of all ages to read, create and discover all things poetry.

WPL wants to do the same by inviting you (children, families and teens) to define poetry your way. Use your creativity and imagination! Can a photograph or a dance define poetry? Or does poetry have to be words on a page? Photography, film, a short literary work – all will be accepted. Please include a one paragraph description on how your piece defines poetry.

Submissions are open to children and youth up to age 17 and will be accepted April 1 until April 29, 2017. Please submit an image/video of your work or a PDF document with attention to Daniella Liebregts-Hamilton in person, or via email to [email protected].

ADVENTURE TIME WITH MATTHEW FORSYTHE Tuesday, March 14: 1:00-2:00 pm (City Hall Community Room)

Everyone is invited to join cartoonist and illustrator, Matthew Forsythe on an exciting journey! Take a peek behind the scenes of Adventure Time, learn the steps that illustrators take to publish a book and how illustrators and authors work together, and discover how you, too, can have a career in illustration! Matthew Forsythe was the Lead Designer for the popular graphic novel and Cartoon Network’s, Adventure Time. He is also the award-winning illustrator for books including “My Name is Elizabeth,” “Ojingogo,” and a forthcoming book by Lemony Snicket! Come step into the world of art and adventure.

This presentation was made possible by a generous donation from the Canadian Federation of University Women, Welland and District.

Whether it’s reading a novel, following a recipe when baking or cooking, or reading street signs in the city, reading is an essential part of our everyday routine that can be an enjoyable activity shared by everyone in the family.

In celebration of Family Literacy Day, the Welland Public Library challenges families to bake together and submit their favourite nut-free recipe. What’s the challenge? Find a way to integrate one of these ABC foods: apple, banana or chocolate. Drop off your recipe and ingredient list, along with samples of your baked goods on January 25 or 26 for judging. Winners will be announced on January 27. Your recipe will be added to our online Welland Public Library recipe book and you will be eligible for the grand prize!
