MAKING DISCIPLES OF JESUS CHRIST FOR THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE WORLD

through Christian Growth, Community Outreach and Life Skill Development

S.O.S. SUMMER OF SERVICEThe mission of Bethel University’s Summer of Service is to impact the Michiana area with the life-changing love of God and to build a high level of community among the participants. Ten students from Grace’s Youth Group will be among those participants building community with dozens of other students.

The Summer of Ser-vice will be June 13 – 16. Although Bethel serves as the central location, the area served could be anywhere in Michiana.

There will be an SOS meeting for all students that are participat-ing and their parents on Sunday,

June 9 in between services in the Parlor.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL“If they make a craft, it just goes home and gets thrown away. If they perform a service project, it makes an impression for years to come,” said Melodie Ringer, Director of Education & Programming at Grace UMC when talking about this year’s

Vacation Bible School.

As a result, Grace’s VBS will have more of a

missional aspect than previous years. Participants will help plant and cultivate a

garden, and then will be able to

return in a couple of months to harvest the

garden for their friends and family.

The children will also help with Grace’s Paper Pantry by sorting, bagging and stocking the items to be distributed during the July Paper Pantry. Thus, the children are making a connection to Grace and mission activities of the church.

At the Vacation Bible School, called “The Incredible Race”, the children will race from continent to continent uncovering clues and attempting challenges as they fill their score cards. They will also discover that, no matter where we live, what shade of skin we have, or what language we speak, we are all part of the same race—the human race—and all are part of the same family from Adam and Eve.

With VBS right around the corner, June 17-21, 2019, adult and youth volunteers are still needed to shepherd groups of children from one station to another. Although this is a very important job, it does not require any pre-planning except for the volunteer meeting (lunch and training) on Sunday, June 16 after the second service. Those that are helping for the first time will also receive Safe Sanctuary training.

Visit the church’s website or fill out a green slip in the Sunday bulletin to register.

Pam and I just returned from vacation. For part of the time we were in Greenville, South Carolina. We wanted to see it because there is so much press about the downtown. It is beautiful. There is not a single building on Main Street that is not in tip-top shape, regardless of whether it was new or historic. And the downtown is built around a series of waterfalls and includes a gorgeous downtown park.

Near Greenville is Caesar’s Head State Park, which has the highest mountain in South Carolina. When you are on top of that mountain, you can overlook the Smoky Mountain range and look down upon mountain lakes formed by over 400 waterfalls. You can also look back and see the city of Greenville off in the distance.

One of the things I thought of as I pondered the beauty of downtown Greenville and the beauty of the mountains is that humanity has a choice. We can

create beauty representing our skills and genius and build it alongside the beauty created by God. Unfortunately, Pam and I have visited many places where the beauty of God’s creation was scared by what we did to the land or the waters. My prayer is that each and everyone of us remembers that God’s first charge to us was to be stewards of his creation. In the very first chapter of the Bible God tells us to subdue the earth and rule over it. That was not a command to abuse God’s creation. Rather, it was a command to be good stewards of it, and to keep it as God originally saw it; as “very good.” It was nice to see that the citizens of Greenville did that with their downtown.

I hope you have a chance to travel this summer and see some beautiful things created by God. I pray that you will also find alongside of them some beautiful things created by humanity.

Blessings!Pastor David

PRAYER FOCUS

Summer vacation has begun. Children are outside playing and enjoying the warm weather. We will be traveling, having family reunions, packing picnic lunches and taking trips to the beach. Don’t forget to take God with you on your summer adventures.

Heavenly father, we put our children in your care. Please keep them safe as they go about the business of being children, and protect them from harm. As we travel and enjoy time with family and friends and just enjoy the pleasures summer has to offer, cover us with your love and protection as a hen covers her chicks with her feathers. We trust in your love that you give so abundantly. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

DEUTERONOMY 33:12 (NRSV)The beloved of the Lord rests in safety—the High God surrounds him all day long—the beloved rests between his shoulders.

PSALM 91:1-4 (NRSV)You who live in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress;my God, in whom I trust.” For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence;he will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
