Statement of purpose Tanya & Bryn Tew 01352 716898 0787 670 5006 [email protected]

I have been childminding since 2012, and have experience of bringing up my own daughters Elen (born in 2011) and Eirwyn (born in 2013). I previously worked as a secondary school Maths teacher for 5 years before I started my family, and my husband is currently a college lecturer working at a college on the Wirral. He is also registered as a childminder, helping out in the evenings, weekends, and holidays. He is also available if an emergency occurs. I run my childminding business from our family home in Holywell. My husband and I are both non-smokers and have a variety of pets. The goldfish are housed in a 4ft fish tank, a mature friendly tabby cat called Annabella and a rabbit called Enfys who lives in the back garden.

As a registered childminder I aim to provide a childminding service that allows boys and girls to learn and develop in a safe, secure, home-based environment. Play will be at the centre of your child’s learning and development, and a wide range of activities and experiences appropriate to the age and stage of development will be offered. We have a regular routine in the household that revolves around playtimes, rest times and meal times.

My husband and I are registered with the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales (CSSIW) and are able to care for up to 4 children under the age of 12 years.

I also offer out of school care for children over the age of twelve. My service is open to all children and families and I may be able to care for children with additional needs. All children require a settling in period in order to adjust to new surroundings and routines. I will also request a four-week trial period on our contract, so if you, your child or I am not happy with the arrangement it can be terminated easily.

I have a secure back garden which is available for children to play in and a Council maintained play area situated opposite the house containing slide, swings, toddler equipment, basket ball hoop and room for ball games. Children will also be taken to the local playgroups, Ti â fi (Welsh language) groups, shops and library on a regular basis. My first language is English but I do use basic Welsh on a daily basis. I am able to drop off and pick up from Ysgol Gwenffrwd and St Winefride’s Catholic Primary School. I provide a range of activities including arts and crafts/junk modelling, storytelling, singing and musical instruments, role play, construction toys and jigsaws.

My service is available from 7am to 7pm and I will negotiate an individual contract for each child. Following my Complaints Policy, any complaints which I cannot resolve can be referred to: Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales, Sarn Mynach, Llandudno Junction, LL31 9RZ

This statement will be kept under review and revised regularly. Where practical, the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales will be notified of any revision at least 28 days before it takes effect.

Admissions Policy As a registered Childminder with CSSIW I am restricted to the number and ages of children that I can care for at any one time. These details are on my CSSIW Registration Certificate, which is displayed during my minding hours.

I am registered to care for: Four children under 12 years of age (this number includes my own children) Of those four children, no more than three may be under five years of age. Of those three children, normally no more than two may be under 18 months of age, although

exceptions can be made for siblings.

I am happy to take on any baby/child within my registered numbers and will not discriminate against children or their families for reasons such as race, religion, sex or ability. However I would like to make the following statements:

I would be willing to drop off/collect children from Ysgol Gwenffrwd and St Winefride’s Catholic Primary school in the Holywell area.

I am happy to take on children with special needs providing I feel I can provide them with the care they need. For example, I will not be able to provide one to one care or look after a child in a wheelchair, as unfortunately, my home is not suitable. If your child has additional needs please discuss them with me first as I would not want to raise your expectations.

All children will be welcomed into my home and I will encourage the other children in my care to support me with this. I will request a four-week settling in period on our contract, so if you, your child or I am not happy with the arrangement it can be terminated easily. When taking on additional children I must take into consideration the children already in my care who are happy and settled. It would be very unfair on them to introduce a child who may severely disrupt the current level of care provided to the other children.

If you have any concerns regarding my admissions policy please do not hesitate to contact me.

Additional Educational Needs Policy My childminding service is available to all children (male and female). Each child’s individual needs will be discussed in full with parents (and the child where possible). Prior to committing to a contract there will be plenty of time to focus on supporting the child at whatever stage of development they start at. The child will be given the opportunity to be involved and make choices around the activities and games on offer.

I will be recording information on the child’s development and behaviour in order to build a picture as to what they can do and are happy doing in order to plan for future learning and development.

My setting will be as child friendly as possible in order to allow all children to participate in events. Parents and children will be shown around my home to ensure that if a child has a disability, that my home will be suitable for their needs. I will access toys and equipment suitable for all children.

I have a copy of the Special Education Needs (SEN) Code of Practice and understand the principles behind this. I understand the need to discuss the child’s progress on a regular basis with parents as they know their child best. If I have any concerns I will raise them with the

Page 5: Childminding Documents - Holywell Childmindertanyaslittletykes.webs.com/Docs/Childminding booklet.pdf · Childminding Documents . Contents Statement of Purpose 3 Child’s Information

parent and will always advise them to seek help from relevant professionals i.e. GP, Health Visitor, School Teacher and Additional Educational needs Coordinator (AENCO) where possible and where appropriate.

I will undertake training where possible in order to gain more knowledge and understanding of a child with additional needs. If I need further support or training I can contact: PACEY childminding Development & Network Coordinator LA Additional Educational Needs Coordinator (AENCO)

Should I decide to take on an assistant I know that it is my responsibility to ensure that they meet this standard. I will ensure that they receive appropriate training and purchase Employer’s Liability Insurance accordingly.

This policy is written in conjunction with my Equal Opportunities Policy to ensure that no child is discriminated against and is given every opportunity to flourish within my setting.

Records

Outcome: Parents and CSSIW have access as appropriate to a full range of records maintained by the registered person for smooth running of the setting.

As required by regulation 30, Schedule 3 of the Child Minding and Day Care (Wales) Regulations 2010, I will keep and maintain the following records on the premises whilst the children concerned are being cared for: The name, address and telephone number of the following:

A copy will be retained of the most recent inspection report from CSSIW, and where applicable Estyn, together with resultant action plans. These documents will be made freely available to parents.

Working in Partnership with Parents

Outcome: Parents will always be kept fully involved in and informed about their child's activities, achievements and progress when in my care.

I will ensure that: I work in partnership with parents to meet the needs of the children, both individually and

as a group. That the parents' primary responsibility for their children is recognised and respected. Parents are kept fully informed about routines and child care practices. All relevant policies and procedures are made freely available to all parents. The policy about privacy and confidentiality will be made available. Any requests from third

parties for information will be discussed with parents and information will only be shared with their consent. An exception can be made where there is a requirement to report concerns about the welfare or safety of a child, for example, in relation to child protection.

If a child is identified as a child in need (section 17 of the Children Act 1989) then I, the registered person, with parents' permission, will provided appropriate information to referring agencies.

Children will only be released from the care of the provision to individuals named by the parents.

When caring for children under 2, there will be a daily system for the exchange of information between the parent and myself. This includes information about the child's changing developmental and care needs and routines.

Confidentiality Policy

Information will only be shared if the parents, carers or co-workers give their permission, or there appears to be child protection issue. All details will be kept confidential and records are kept secure. The details are accessible if any information is required for the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales (CSSIW).

Procedure (how I put the statement into practice) All parents receive a copy of my policies and procedures, which give details of how I run my setting. Childminders do not normally have to register with the Information Commissioner under the Data Protection Act 1998. However, I do need to comply with the Data Protection Act and the National Minimum Standards for childminders. All written records will be kept securely locked away. All information will be kept confidential and will not be disclosed without the parent’s consent, except as required by law, for example, if there appears to be a child protection issue. Any records kept on an individual child are kept for 3 years as stipulated in the national minimum standards with the exception of the Accident/Incident book which will be kept for 21 years and 4 months. All records retained are in line with the terms of my Public liability insurance.

As a childminder I am obliged to inform CSSIW of the following: Any changes in members of staff and people living on the premises. Any changes in the name or home address of any of the above. Any significant changes to the premises or any change of address. Any significant changes to the type of care or in the hours in which care if provided. Any infectious disease, serious injury or death. Allegations of serious harm or abuse which is alleged to have taken place at the premises. Any other significant event likely to affect the suitability of the registered person, or likely

to affect the welfare of the child. My CSSIW inspection report will be available to all parents.

Opportunities for Play and Learning

Outcome: Children have a range of experiences which include freely chosen, unstructured and self-directed play. All of these contribute to their emotional, physical, social, intellectual, language and creative development.

As the registered childminder I will be responsible for ensuring that: The child's individual needs are met and their welfare is promoted by planning and providing

play opportunities and activities to promote emotional, physical, social, creative, linguistic and intellectual development.

The resources used and play opportunities, first-hand experiences and activities provided aid the child's development and build on their natural curiosity.

Children will be given many opportunities to be active, indoors as well as out, as well as time to relax.

Children will have many opportunities to play and learn outdoors. The environment is one that will encourage children to be confident, independent and

develop their self-esteem, to respect others and develop a sense of what is right and wrong. Positive relationships will be built with the children and their parents to facilitate a good

understanding of individual needs and home circumstances.

The National Standards on Child and Young People's Participation will be applied to the way in which the service is delivered in terms of: Listening and valuing what the children in my care say, talking with them about what they are

doing and actively encouraging them to explore their full potential. Opportunities for involving children in decision making, evaluating and planning on a variety

of levels will be regularly explored. What children do will be closely observed and, if needed, recorded to help plan the next

steps for the children's play, learning and development. Resources will be organised so that they are readily accessible to children and I will support

children's play and learning to the best of my ability.

Page 9: Childminding Documents - Holywell Childmindertanyaslittletykes.webs.com/Docs/Childminding booklet.pdf · Childminding Documents . Contents Statement of Purpose 3 Child’s Information

The principles of the Foundations Phase and its seven areas of learning are understood and will be applied in a way that is appropriate to the age, abilities and stage of development of the children in my care.

When providing care for children under 2: There will be clear planning of babies' activities. They will be fed and changed consistently by the same person (i.e. myself) The children will interact consistently and frequently throughout the day with myself (i.e.

the key worker).

Nurture and well-being Outcome: I aim to ensure that children in my care always feel secure, happy and comfortable with both myself and the environment, and their rights will always be respected.

As the registered childminder I will be responsible for ensuring that: I am aware of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and its implications

for working and interacting with children. The setting's policies and the care provided promotes warm relationships, security, self-

esteem, independence and confidence for children, in a responsive, nurturing atmosphere. Communication with children will be given in a positive and encouraging way and children will

always be listened to. Eye-contact and general conversation will take place at the child's level (by coming down to their level by crouching, kneeling or getting on the floor).

Children will be enabled to develop confidence and self-esteem within the setting. The settling-in process and separation from parents will be aimed to minimise distress and

anxiety. Babies and very young children will be able to develop an attachment to myself as the

consistent carer. This will be done by ensuring that consistent and frequent care is allocated to these children throughout the day (not at the expense of other children's well-being however).

Lost/missing Child Procedure

The care of your child is paramount and I will always try to ensure that they remain with me and are safe. However sometimes children can become ‘lost’ in busy places and therefore as a responsible childminder I have written a procedure that will be followed in the unlikely event of this happening. I will immediately raise the alarm to all around me that I have lost a child and enlist the help

of everyone to look for them If it is a secure area such as a shopping centre, I will quickly alert the security staff so

they can seal off exits and monitor the situation on any CCTV I will provide everyone involved in the search with a description of the child. I will reassure the other children with me, as they may be distressed I will then alert the police and provide a full description I will then alert the parents of the situation

I take precautions to avoid situations like this happening by implementing the following measures: Ensuring the children hold my hand or the pushchair whilst we are out Avoid going to places that are overcrowded On outings the children wear wristbands with my mobile number on them I teach the children about the dangers of wandering off and of talking to strangers

Not collected procedure

I will only release your child from my care to adults who have permission to collect him/her. I will therefore need you to provide me with a list of people authorised to collect. It would be helpful, if they are not known to me, to include a description or a photograph for me to keep on file. In the event of an emergency, we can operate a password system where you can send

Page 12: Childminding Documents - Holywell Childmindertanyaslittletykes.webs.com/Docs/Childminding booklet.pdf · Childminding Documents . Contents Statement of Purpose 3 Child’s Information

someone not authorised to collect your child but who is able to give the password. Please discuss with me if you would like to use this system.

It is important that you arrive at the contracted time to collect your child. Even very young children learn our routine and know when their parents are due. They can become distressed if you are late. I know sometimes delays are unavoidable, especially if you are relying on public transport. If you are delayed, for whatever reason please contact me and let me know when you expect to arrive. I will normally be able to accommodate the additional care, however if I am unable to, I will contact other adults from the authorised list and arrange for them to collect your child. I will reassure your child that you are on the way and if necessary organise additional activities and a meal.

If I have not heard from you and you are very late I will try and make contact with you. I will also attempt to contact the emergency numbers provided. If I am unable to make contact with anyone I will inform Social Services and follow their advice

I reserve the right to make an additional charge for late collection.

Behaviour Policy This behaviour policy is produced along side article 19 of Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).

Unacceptable behaviour is behaviour which: Is dangerous, hurtful or offensive to someone else – other children, adults or animals; Is dangerous to the child himself/herself; Will make the child unwelcome or unacceptable to other people. Damages other people’s property.

Promoting positive behaviour is very important and I do this by: Giving lots of praise for good behaviour Giving the children individual attention so they feel valued Setting a good example, being a good role model Listening to what the children have to say Rewarding good behaviour (choosing next activity etc) Using a good behaviour chart Giving children certificates for good behaviour, sharing etc.

I help the children understand my house rules, which are realistic and I am consistent in the enforcing of them. These are: We treat the furniture with respect We remove our shoes in the hallway We look after the toys and play with them correctly We share our toys and activities and help to tidy away when finished with them. We are very careful around the fish tank We stay downstairs, unless permission is given to go upstairs We treat others how we would like to be treated

I do not give out confusing signals, Saying No means No!

Page 13: Childminding Documents - Holywell Childmindertanyaslittletykes.webs.com/Docs/Childminding booklet.pdf · Childminding Documents . Contents Statement of Purpose 3 Child’s Information

I am aware of the different reasons why children misbehave and will endeavour to keep to routines so that your child feels safe and is not over tired or hungry.

However all children will misbehave at sometime. I have developed several different strategies on how to deal with a child misbehaving and use different ones depending on the age/stage of ability of the child and the situation. Distraction.

Remove the child from the situation and give them an alternative activity. Ignore.

Depending on the situation I may ignore the bad behaviour as I feel it is being done to get a reaction.

Discuss with Child. If the child is able to understand I will discuss their behaviour and try and get them to appreciate the consequences of their actions on others. I inform them that it is their behaviour that I do not like, not them.

Time Out. Removing the child from the activity and sitting them quietly for a few minutes

Removal of treats.

I will never smack, shake or hurt your child. I will not humiliate your child.

Bullying Policy I will not permit any form of bullying in my home

Bullying can be: Physical: pushing, kicking, hitting, biting etc Verbal: Name-calling, sarcasm, rumour spreading and teasing Emotional: Excluding, ridicule, humiliation, tormenting Racist: taunts, graffiti and gestures

Being bullied can result in the victim having depression, low self-esteem, shyness, poor academic achievement, isolation and in extreme cases threatened or attempted suicide.

If a bully is left unchecked they will learn they can get away with violence and aggression. A bully has a higher chance of acquiring a criminal record and not being able to have good relationships when they become an adult.

If I have any concerns that a child in my care is being bullied at (pre-) school or is bullying, I will discuss the matter with you immediately. I will work with you to support your child to resolve the problem.

If your child is being bullied: I will reassure them that the bullying is not their fault Tell them that I care about them and am 100% on their side I will give them lots of praise, encouragement and responsibilities to help them feel valued I will work with you to help the child to develop techniques to deal with the bully-

assertiveness, walking away etc.

If your child is the bully: I will reassure your child that I still care about them but it is their behaviour I don’t like

and I will work with them to help change this

Page 14: Childminding Documents - Holywell Childmindertanyaslittletykes.webs.com/Docs/Childminding booklet.pdf · Childminding Documents . Contents Statement of Purpose 3 Child’s Information

I will work with your child to find ways to make amends for their actions I will develop a reward structure for good behaviour I will discuss the matter with you, not in front of your child, to see if there are any

problems that may have triggered the bullying.

If you have any concerns regarding your child please discuss them with me as soon as possible. It is much better to deal with these problems before they become major issues.

This policy will be kept under review. Where practical, the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales will be notified of any revision at least 28 days before it takes effect.

Hygiene Policy

It is very important to prevent the spread of germs and illnesses that hygiene procedures are in place and strictly adhered to.

Children are encouraged to wash their hands after going to the toilet, touching animals and playing outside. They must also wash their hands before eating any meals or snacks.

I will assist the children in hand washing, ensuring that they are washing and drying them correctly.

I will provide a clean towel in the bathroom each day, however if a child is poorly I will provide them with their own towel as a precaution.

I am happy to help children to clean their teeth after meals if you provide me with a toothbrush and paste.

I will assist children with wiping their noses when they have colds and try to teach them how to blow their noses. I will explain to them the importance of safely throwing away dirty tissues to prevent the spread of germs. I will also encourage them to put their hand over their mouths when they cough.

I will not mind a child who has had an upset stomach in the last 48 hours.

I will disinfect my changing mat between children.

I will follow strict hygiene routines in my kitchen, ensuring my fridge is at the correct temperature and that food is stored correctly in it. Cleaning all kitchen work surfaces using antibacterial wipes/spray, and sterilising baby bottles, teats etc.

In order for me to carry out these procedures effectively I will need you to provide me with enough resources, for example nappies, labelled cream, spare clothes etc. for your child. I also request that you let me know if your child is feeling or has been unwell.

Exclusion Due To Illness Policy

I appreciate that as a working parent you need to be able to go to work, however if your child is unwell then they will be bettered cared for in their own home with a parent. I am happy to care for children with minor coughs and colds but will not care for children who are very unwell, infectious or running a high temperature. I have to go out each day to do school and pre-school runs and need to consider the welfare of all the children in my care.

Page 15: Childminding Documents - Holywell Childmindertanyaslittletykes.webs.com/Docs/Childminding booklet.pdf · Childminding Documents . Contents Statement of Purpose 3 Child’s Information

In the event of your child suffering from one of the following illnesses, please be aware that your child will need to stay away from the childminding environment for at least the time stated below.

This is to enable me to care for all the children with me (including my own) adequately.

ILLNESS RECOMMENDED TIME OFF

Chicken Pox 6 days from appearance of the rash (i.e. last spot) & if all spots have dried.

Measles 7 days from appearance of rash, if child is well. Mumps 5 days from onset of swollen glands. Rubella 5 days from appearance of rash. Impetigo Until lesions are crusted/or healed. Head Lice Can only return once thoroughly treated. Slapped cheek virus Until child is physically well and rash has disappeared. Tonsillitis Until child is physically well. Conjunctivitis When eyes are totally clear of infection. Sickness and Diarrhoea 48 hours clear of any illness. Scarlet Fever & Whooping Cough 5 days from commencing antibiotics.

Dysentery/Diphtheria Until child is well. Jaundice/Polio Until child is well. Tuberculosis/Influenza Until child is well.

Any time taken off as a result of illness when your child would normally have attended will still require payment at agreed rates.

If your child becomes ill whilst in my care, I will make them as comfortable as possible, isolate them from the other children if necessary and reassure them. I will contact you immediately for you to pick up your child within 1 hour and continue to care for your child until you arrive.

I am happy to administer medication - please see my Medication Policy.

I will contact you if one of my own children is not well, inform you of the illness/symptoms and if I am able to work. This then allows you to make an informed decision as to whether to bring your child or not.

If you have any concerns regarding this policy please contact me.

Food and Drink Outcome: Children in my care will be provided with regular drinks and food in adequate quantities for their needs.

As a registered childminder I will ensure that: Information is obtained from parents and clearly recorded about individual children's

Children will receive meals and/or snacks that have been safely prepared, nutritionally balanced, of good quality and appropriate in quantity following the recommendations in the Welsh Assembly Government Food and Health Guidelines for Early Years and Childcare Settings (2009).

Fresh drinking water will be freely available to children at all times, which can be obtained from the fridge water dispenser.

Children who will remain with me for the whole day will be offered a balanced midday meal (as well as breakfast, if appropriate), with between meal snacks and drinks. The food and drink offered will be varied and nutritious and will meet the religious, cultural and dietary requirements of each of the children. Children attending for part of the day will be offered meals, snacks and drinks appropriate to the length of stay and time of day.

Any food or refreshments obtained in any other setting will be nutritious and will also comply with dietary, religious and cultural requirements.

All food will be stored safely and if parents provide packed lunches, they will be informed of what can be stored safely.

All Food Standards Agency and Environmental Health requirements will be complied with. When there are set meal and refreshment times there will be arranges so as to provide

sociable opportunities for children by sitting them at table(s) and using appropriate crockery and cutlery.

For babies and children under 2: Feeding and nappy changing will take place in accordance with the child's individual needs

and not as part of a strict routine. Facilities are available to support mothers who wish to continue to breastfeed such as by

safely storing expressed milk or providing a quiet area for the mother to breastfeed their baby if they wish to visit during the working day.

Babies will be held when being bottle fed and always held by the same carer (i.e. myself). An area will be provided with access to drinking water and facilities for the hygienic

preparation of babies' feeds. Suitable sterilisation equipment will be used for babies' feeding equipment and dummies. Detailed records will be kept of babies' feed intake and will be shared with their parents.

Operational Plan Outcome: Parents and children benefit from a well organised and planned service.

As a childminder I need to insure that my plans are kept up to date and reviewed on a regular basis and shared with parents. This will show parents and children that I am able to organise my setting and practices to meet the needs of the children and families to allow maximum flexibility in my setting. Any staff employed will be fully trained to ensure the safety, welfare and development of all children. On an annual basis I need to regularly review my service; this will include monitoring my service and sending out questionnaires to parents to get feedback from children and other service users.

I am inspected every 2 years by CSSIW and prepare a Self Assessment of Service and Data Collection report. I have a duty to act on any compliance request made by CSSIW within the specified time. My statement of purpose is regularly reviewed and revised if necessary and within 28 days of taking effect.

A complaints procedure and policies are shared with children and parents at the start of the contract and parents are provided with a copy of these documents.

All childminders have a legal duty to ensure that all people over the age of 16 years living or regularly visiting the setting have a valid Disclosure and Barring Service check and are appropriately trained to safeguard and promote the welfare of children.

As a childminder I work alone and am self employed. From time to time I may meet up with other childminders which will create opportunities to meet other minded children.

As a childminder I will ensure that I carry out regular risk assessments in my premises and outings to ensure the safety, welfare and development of children.

All children will have the opportunity to interact with myself which will ensure that I build a good relationship with your child. I will also encourage opportunities for children to interact and play with other children on a regular basis.

The following rooms are used: Living room – General play, watching TV, playing on the ipad, eating and drinking. Dining room – General play. Kitchen – Cookery, water play, arts and crafts Bedroom – Sleeping/napping. Garden – Outdoor play, gardening. Downstairs toilet Upstairs bathroom

Equipment I will be constantly reviewing the needs of the children in my care in order to purchase the necessary resources and equipment to meet their needs.

Marketing my business I will advertise my business on my own website, Facebook pages, Childcare.co.uk; I will also register my service with the Family Information Service.

Page 19: Childminding Documents - Holywell Childmindertanyaslittletykes.webs.com/Docs/Childminding booklet.pdf · Childminding Documents . Contents Statement of Purpose 3 Child’s Information

Attending play sessions I will attend the local Ti a fi Welsh language playgroups and other local parent and toddler groups.

Changes to house Create storage in the garage to house toys and equipment. Make necessary safety adjustments to the house such as installing child locks on the kitchen cupboards and draws, plug covers in every socket, fitting safety gates etc.

Action plans I will actively seek out training courses as part of my Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Staffing ratios

Outcome: Children benefit because the ratio of adults to children conforms to best practice.

As a registered childminder I have a legal duty to ensure that the required adult: child ratios are met. The maximum number of children for whom I can care for is as follows: Four children under 12 years of age Of those four children, no more than three may be under five years of age. Of those three children, normally no more than two may be under 18 months of age, although

exceptions can be made for siblings.

Any care provided for children aged 12 to 16 must not adversely affect the care provided for any children under the age of 12 years of age. These ratios include my own children and any others for whom I may be responsible for on my premises.

These ratios must be maintained during outings. I have obtained a level 3 in the Diploma in Home-Based childcare Unit 1.

I will ensure that there are suitable contingency arrangements in place to cover emergencies and unexpected absences to cover holidays, training and sickness. I will ensure that time is allocated to spend with parents to regularly review their child’s progress.

If I were to employ an assistant, I will ensure that the same adult: child ratio’s applied. This includes any students on training placements. Any assistants or students will be fully DBS checked.

I will record attendance in my diary, on invoices and in a signing in/out book, which will allow me to know which children are in my care.

Page 20: Childminding Documents - Holywell Childmindertanyaslittletykes.webs.com/Docs/Childminding booklet.pdf · Childminding Documents . Contents Statement of Purpose 3 Child’s Information

Equal Opportunities Policy Outcome: All children are treated with equal concern and respect.

Statement I will make sure that I actively promote equality of opportunity and anti-discriminatory practices for all children. I will make sure that I treat all children with equal concern and respect.

Policy I recognise and welcome all legislation and existing codes of practice, produced by appropriate commissions, for example the Equal Opportunities Commission and United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and Disability Act (SEN Code of practice). As a childminder I will promote good practice in all areas including training, employment, admission process and access to resources, activities and facilities available in my setting.

I value and respect the different racial origins, religions, cultures and languages in a multi-ethnic society so that each child is valued as an individual without racial or gender stereotyping. I will also not discriminate against children on the grounds of disability, sexual orientation, age, class, family status, and HIV/Aids status.

I provide equal chances for each child to learn and develop to their full potential, taking into account each child’s age and stage of development, gender, ethnicity, home language, and ability and have regard to working towards the Foundation Phase in Wales – emphasis on children learning through play and experiences.

I provide and make sure that all children have access to a range of books, puzzles and other toys, wherever possible, which provides positive images and examples of the diversity of life in our society.

I challenge racist and discriminatory remarks, attitudes and behaviour from the children in my care and adults.

All staff will understand and implement this policy which is also available to parents at the contract stage.

I will always help children to feel good about themselves and others, by celebrating the differences which make us all unique individuals. E.g.

St David’s day St Patrick’s day St George’s day St Andrew’s day Christmas Easter Mother’s day Father’s day Chinese new year Diwali Ramadan

Page 21: Childminding Documents - Holywell Childmindertanyaslittletykes.webs.com/Docs/Childminding booklet.pdf · Childminding Documents . Contents Statement of Purpose 3 Child’s Information

This policy is written in conjunction with the SEN code of practice and Disability Act 1995 to ensure that no child is discriminated against and is given every opportunity to flourish within my setting.

As a childminder I will ensure that I will comply with all legislation in connection with safeguarding children and take into account children’s wishes and feelings and ensure that children’s privacy and dignity is respected.

I will review this policy on an annual basis and notify CSSIW within 28 days of any changes taking effect.

Financial Procedures

Outcome: Children and their parents will be safeguarded by the registered person (i.e. myself) by operating sound financial procedures.

As a registered childminder I will be responsible for ensuring that: Effective financial procedures will be operated, which includes maintaining accurate records

of all financial transactions made relating to my business including my income and expenditure.

If requested by CSSIW, these records relating to the provision of care to relevant children will be made available.

I will ensure that I keep all receipts for all food purchases in line with the requirements of Environmental Health.

As a childminder I will ensure that I keep up to date on changes to legislation. My local PACEY development worker will provide business support.

I will maintain adequate public liability insurance at all times and ensure that I have valid car insurance to transport minded children which will include business use. I will also ensure I always have a valid driving license and MOT certificate for any vehicles used.

I understand that I am self-employed and have a duty to complete annual tax returns.

Late Payment Policy I work as a registered childminder as I love caring for children and supporting their development, however it is my chosen career and business. Like you I too have bills and expenses to meet each month and therefore require a regular income. I would be grateful if you could ensure that you are prompt in paying your monthly invoice.

Invoices are issued the month before payments are due. If payments are late you will incur a late payment fee of £15 a day. If I have still not received payment by the 7th day, I reserve the right to cease minding your child with immediate effect. A polite reminder letter will be sent to your address by recorded delivery along with a copy of the original invoice outlining charges being incurred as stated in the contract. Morton Michel’s (Childminding professional body I belong to) legal team will also be informed of the outstanding bill. If I have still not received payment by 14 days of the date of the letter, the debt will then be passed on to Morton Michel’s legal team who will then recover the debt on my behalf. This may result in you being summoned to attend a hearing at County Court and if the judge finds in my favour you will also be liable to the Court for costs.

Page 22: Childminding Documents - Holywell Childmindertanyaslittletykes.webs.com/Docs/Childminding booklet.pdf · Childminding Documents . Contents Statement of Purpose 3 Child’s Information

If you have had a change in personal circumstances and are now struggling to make payments, please let me know so we can make suitable arrangements. It may be that you are now entitled to additional funding through the Childcare element of the Working Tax Credit and other benefits.

Quality Assurance

Outcome: Children and their parents will benefit from a quality service that is effectively monitored.

As a registered childminder I will be responsible for ensuring that: There will be effective quality assurance and quality monitory systems in place. The views of

the children and their parents are regularly sought as part of this process in order to measure the success of the service in meeting the assessed needs of the children. This will be done through the use of: - A comments/feedback/suggestion book - A suggestion box with plenty of sheets of paper and pens (that can be completed

anonymously if required) situated in the hall so parents can complete it privately before they leave.

- The use of parent questionnaires. - Regular conversations with parents where their honest opinions and ideas will be sought. - The ability to email me with suggestions if parents/children cannot think of any whilst on

the premises. There will be continuous monitoring of the quality of service provided that meets the legal

requirements of the regulations as cited in Child Minding and Day Care (Wales) Regulations 2010, Regulation 16 - Review of quality of care. This will be conducted through regular parent questionnaires (see sample questionnaire attached). Questions will regularly focus on whether parents feel there is enough outdoor and indoor play, enough multi-cultural learning experiences, etc., and any other areas where they feel they would like to see development.

I will take account of the feedback offered from parents and seek to change and develop my service in accordance to this feedback to the best of my ability in order to meet the needs of the children and their parents.

I will take account of the advice and recommendations of CSSIW and any other professional bodies to which they may be affiliated and work to change and develop my service in accordance to this advice and recommendations.

There are other key areas that I will also regularly review including: - Training attended - Training requirements - Complaints log - Accident/medication and incident book - Risk assessments - Child Record Forms - Contracts - Statement of purpose - CSSIW recommendations - PACEY/Morton Michel Support and recommendations - Resources and premises - Equipment

Page 23: Childminding Documents - Holywell Childmindertanyaslittletykes.webs.com/Docs/Childminding booklet.pdf · Childminding Documents . Contents Statement of Purpose 3 Child’s Information

- Polices and procedures As a childminder I have a legal duty to monitor and deal with any complaints received in line

with my complaints policy. I will review my service on an annual basis and provide a quality of care report on receipt of parent questionnaires and feedback from children within 28 days. This will be made available to parents of relevant children, CSSIW and the local authority if providing care for relevant children and Welsh Ministers. My report will also take into account the aforementioned advice and recommendations of CSSIW and any other professional bodies to which they may be affiliated.

This would usually be verbally and every effort will be made to resolve the issue through frank and open discussion. If you prefer, you can put the complaint in writing. Every effort will be made to resolve this within 14 days; this timescale may be extended to 28 days with the agreement of all parties. I am also obliged to confirm the resolution of a complaint at the request of the National Assembly or any Local Authority that has arranged for the prevision of the Childminding or Day Care for the relevant child. Once the complaint is resolved I will confirm in writing the outcome of the complaint.

Child Protection Policy My first responsibility and priority is towards the children in my care. If I have any cause for concern I will report it, following the All Wales Child Protection Procedures. The relevant local procedures that are held by me are available on request.

I am familiar with the All Wales Child Protection Procedures. I check every six months that I have the latest version of the relevant procedures (or any documents that may replace them in the future).

The introduction to the childminding practice has helped me understand the categories of abuse:

Physical Sexual Emotional Neglect Bullying

I have also had training to understand the types of signs and symptoms, which may indicate a child at risk of abuse. I must notify the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales of any allegations of abuse, which are alleged to have taken place while the child is in my care.

I keep up to date with child protection issues and relevant legislation by taking regular training courses and by reading relevant literature published. This helps me to be aware of the abuse or neglect and what to do if I have a concern.

I have a copy of the relevant booklets and guidance (as outlined in the PACEY booklet Safeguarding Children: a Guide for Childminders). I have read them and understood them.

If I am concerned about a child’s welfare, I may contact the local authority, the NSPCC, PACEY/Morton Michel, or other relevant support services for advice, providing this does not affect confidentiality.

I am also able to contact my local Safeguarding Children’s Board who are able to give me advice. I understand their role is to safeguard and promote the welfare of children in my local authority to ensure effectiveness in the tasks of the representatives on the Board.

Child protection concerns that could identify a particular child are kept confidential and only shared with the people who need to know this information.

Parents must notify me of any concerns they have about their child and any accidents, incidents or injuries affecting the child, which will be recorded. I work together with parents to make sure the care of their child is consistent. Please refer to my Working with Parents policy.

If I notice: Significant changes in behaviour Unexpected bruising or marks Any comments made which give me cause for concern Deterioration in general wellbeing which causes concern

Page 29: Childminding Documents - Holywell Childmindertanyaslittletykes.webs.com/Docs/Childminding booklet.pdf · Childminding Documents . Contents Statement of Purpose 3 Child’s Information

I will implement the All Wales Child Protection Procedures without delay to minimise any risk to the child. I will call the local social services’ duty desk and follow it up with a letter within 48 hours. I will keep a factual record of the concern and will ask the parents for an explanation, providing it would not put the child at risk.

The national minimum standards for registered childminders require me to let the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales know of any concerns that I have reported without delay.

If a child tells me that they or another child is being abused, I will: Show that I have heard what they are saying, and that I take their allegations seriously. Encourage the child to talk, but I will not prompt them or ask them leading questions. I will

not interrupt when a child is recalling significant events and will not make a child repeat their account.

Explain what actions I must take, in a way that is appropriate to the age and understanding of the child.

Write down what I have been told using exact words where possible. Make a note of the date, time, place and people who were present at the discussion. Then report my concerns immediately to the duty social worker who has the experience and

responsibility to make an assessment of the situation.

If an allegation is made against me, I will report it to the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales following the All Wales Child Protection Procedures. I will also contact PACEY’s Safeguarding children service for advice and support.

In all instances I will record: The child’s full name and address The date and time of the record Factual details of the concern, for example bruising, what the child said, who was present Details of any previous concerns Details of any explanations from the parents Any action taken such as speaking to parents.

It is not my responsibility to attempt to investigate the situation myself.

Environment Outcome: Children are cared for in an environment that is safe, secure and suitable for their purpose.

As a registered childminder I will ensure that: The setting is welcoming and friendly to children and parents and provides a rich

environment for play. The physical environment is safe, secure, and suitable for their purpose. The premises

provides adequate space in an appropriate location, are welcoming to children and offer access to the necessary facilities for a range of activities that promote their development.

Any premises that are part of the provision are clean, well lit with adequate natural lighting, adequately ventilated and maintained in a suitable state of repair and decoration.

Local planning and building control requirements are met. There is access to a telephone.

Page 30: Childminding Documents - Holywell Childmindertanyaslittletykes.webs.com/Docs/Childminding booklet.pdf · Childminding Documents . Contents Statement of Purpose 3 Child’s Information

Rooms are maintained at a temperature of at least 18 degrees Centigrade (65 degrees Fahrenheit). This will be done by having the central heating thermostat set at or above this temperature.

Play areas are large enough to give scope for free movement and well spread out activities. The indoor playing space provides at least the following minimum per child:

- Under 2 years - 3.5 sq metres - 2 - 7 - 2.5 sq metres

A separate space/partitioned area is available for children who want to relax, play quietly or sleep. It is equipped with appropriate furniture. This area may be converted from normal play space but will allow children to rest safely without disturbance.

There is adequate storage space for equipment. Normally (weather permitting) outdoor play space adjoining the premises is provided. It is

safe, secure, well maintained and exclusively for the use of the children when the provision is operating. Children will also be safely escorted to the local park/playground across the road on a regular basis (again, weather permitting).

There is an area where confidential information and necessary records will be stored securely and where conversations with parents may happen confidentially.

The kitchen conforms to environmental health and food safety regulations. Arrangements are made to ensure that an adequate supply of clean bedding, towels, spare

clothes and any other linen is always available.

Equipment Outcome: Children have access to furniture, equipment, toys and materials that are appropriate and suitable for their needs.

As a registered childminder I am responsible for ensuring: Furniture, equipment and toys are provided which are appropriate for their purpose and help

to create an accessible and stimulating environment. They are of suitable design and condition, well maintained and conform to BS EN safety standards or relevant Toy (Safety) Regulations where applicable.

Sufficient, suitable toys and play materials are available to provide stimulating activities and play opportunities for the children in all areas of play, learning and development. These are appropriate for the ages and individual developmental needs of the children attending and promote their cultural awareness and equal opportunities.

Where public unsupervised playgrounds are used the children will not use faulty equipment. There is adequate equipment for outdoor and sporting-based activities (where/when

applicable). During water sports (e.g. swimming), adequate life saving precautions such as equipment,

buoyancy aids and trained staff (i.e. lifeguards) will be present. For babies and other children under 2:

- Activities, toys and equipment are appropriate for the child's age and provide varied sensory opportunities and experiences both indoors and outdoors.

- Some domestic style furniture is provided to assist children in developing mobility and to continue normal life experiences.

- Cots and other appropriate furniture are provided for children to rest or sleep.

Page 31: Childminding Documents - Holywell Childmindertanyaslittletykes.webs.com/Docs/Childminding booklet.pdf · Childminding Documents . Contents Statement of Purpose 3 Child’s Information

Accident, Emergency and Fire Policy/Procedure

Policy statement It is my absolute priority to keep children safe while they are in my care.

My premises have been checked and they meet the national standards for childminding outlined by the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales (CSSIW). I also regularly review, update and practice safety routines including monthly fire drills.

As a registered childminder, I am legally required to have a valid first-aid certificate. I can administer basic first-aid treatment, and my first-aid box is clearly labelled and easily accessible. It is stored in the downstairs toilet and another in my car. Parent contact numbers are stored in my mobile phone. My home is fitted with smoke alarms and I have a lightweight fire blanket, all of which meet current British Standards.

I hold written permission from parents to get emergency treatment for their child if it is needed.

Procedure If there is an accident: First, I will reassure the injured child while making sure that the other children in my care

are safe. This may mean strapping a baby in a buggy or sitting an older child somewhere safe where they can be seen.

Then, if possible, I will deal with the accident. If not, I will ring 999 for help. If I have to accompany or take a child to hospital. I will either take the other children with

me, or call my emergency back-up cover. This will be another registered childminder or responsible adult. These people will be known to you and are named below.

If there is an emergency (e.g. fire):

Page 32: Childminding Documents - Holywell Childmindertanyaslittletykes.webs.com/Docs/Childminding booklet.pdf · Childminding Documents . Contents Statement of Purpose 3 Child’s Information

Raise the alarm Evacuate the children using the safest and nearest exit available (babies and toddlers will

be carried to safety). Refer to my Emergency Escape plan. I will take my attendance register for the day, contact phone numbers and a mobile phone. We will gather at my Fire Assembly Point at the front of the house on the drive way. After contacting the Emergency Services I will arrange for parents to collect their children

as soon as possible. I will comfort and reassure the children throughout the whole procedure. I will follow the instructions from the Emergency Services. We will not return to the building until the Emergency Services have declared it safe to do

so.

If there is an accident or emergency, my emergency back-up cover may contact you and you will be expected to collect your child straight away.

If I manage to deal with the accident myself, then I will contact the parents and ask them to meet me at the hospital.

If I have the accident, I will get the nearest responsible adult to help, while my emergency back-up people are being contacted.

I will do my best at all times to make sure the children in my care are safe, reassured and kept calm.

Checklist for Risk Assessment – Going on trips

Remember What you need to take will depend on where you are going and how long you will be there. For most trips you will need as a minimum:

When you are on a trip you will need to extra vigilant about the safety of the children if you are visiting a new place as you and the children will be less aware of the hazards. Childminder’s Signature Date

Can I safely supervise the number of children when we are on the trip? Are the children old enough for the outing? Can they do all the activities safely? Will it be too tiring for them? Is there too much walking? Is it too long journey there and back? If I have younger children, can I manage all the equipment I will need – buggies, changing bags, bottles, food, reins, wristbands?

Is the activity suitable for all the children going – is it too young for some children? Will they get bored?

If we are travelling in the car is there somewhere they can safely let off steam when we get there, like an adventure playground?

Will we be able to cope with the weather if it rains or if it is very hot or cold? If we are going on public transport, will we all be able to get on and off the bus or train safely? If we are travelling by coach, will there be seat belts for everyone?

Have I got permission from the parents? Am I insured for the journey – is all my documentation up to date? Could I arrange to possibly go with another childminder? Have I got my First Aid kit up to date to take with me? Do I have all my Emergency Contact Details with me? Do I have up to date permission forms for administration of A&E Treatment?

Contact information for each child in case of emergency or accident Money (remember parking fees) Mobile phone if you have one (phone charger in the car) Food and drink Sun block, hat or waterproof/warm clothing depending on the time of year Age appropriate buoyancy aids if required Parental consent forms to be signed before you go If you were to have an accident how would people know that you are a childminder and that the children with you may not be your own (who would be your emergency contact and where would you keep this information?)

Have you breakdown cover for your vehicle

Page 35: Childminding Documents - Holywell Childmindertanyaslittletykes.webs.com/Docs/Childminding booklet.pdf · Childminding Documents . Contents Statement of Purpose 3 Child’s Information

Safety on Outings Procedure When taking children on outings it is essential that proper planning is done to ensure the safety and welfare of all children involved.

I obtain written parental permission for all routine and special outings. I inform parents of any planned special trips for example to the coast or a local farm.

I ensure that I take with me everything I may need, Emergency Contact cards for the children, First Aid Kit, nappies and changing bag (if required) spare clothes, mobile phone, drinks and a healthy snack.

I have developed plans on what to do in the event of an emergency. I carry a contact card for each child, providing a photograph of them, their name and an emergency contact name and number. I have also a card on me that explains that I am a registered childminder. I have also programmed ICE into my mobile telephone.

I will endeavour to organise outings to fit in with the needs of the children, and ensure that I have the necessary equipment and resources to keep them safe. These include car seats for all children up to 4 feet 5 inches tall, pushchairs and harnesses. In all trips in the car I will ensure each child is securely strapped into their car seat and that the maximum number of passengers for the car is never exceeded.

I will ensure that the car is properly maintained with a current MOT certificate, tax and insurance. I will never leave your child unattended when out, especially in the car. If I need to put more fuel in my car I will do this outside of minded hours so that I do not have to take them out on a busy station forecourt or leave them in the car whilst I pay.

If you have any concerns regarding this policy please discuss them with me.

Safety Outcome: Children are cared for and have their needs met in a safe environment.

As a registered childminder I am responsible for ensuring that: Safety is promoted within the setting and on outings, and proper precautions are taken to

prevent accidents. Hazards to children on the premises, both inside and outside, are kept to a minimum. Health

and safety regulations are complied with. Children are supervised at all times, and extra care is taken during activities which may

carry some level of danger. Children can play safely outside through a combination of supervision and protection from

hazards. There is a system for managing access to the premises and a record of visitors kept. When placed in high (or low) chairs children are secured in safety harnesses as appropriate. Sleeping babies are frequently checked on and the guidance on sleeping babies will be

followed. The premises, including outside play areas, are secure and children are not able to leave

unsupervised. In open access play provision in public parks or other public areas, children are not at risk

from members of the public and are protected from unwanted attention.

Page 36: Childminding Documents - Holywell Childmindertanyaslittletykes.webs.com/Docs/Childminding booklet.pdf · Childminding Documents . Contents Statement of Purpose 3 Child’s Information

In open access play provision good practice will be followed in terms of safety and child protection when children are leaving the provision.

A risk assessment of the premises is completed at least annually and is reviewed when there are any changes to the premises or the needs of the children. An action plan with timescales identifying action to be taken to minimise identified risks will be created.

Risk management of individual activities and play opportunities balances risk of harm against the benefits for the child.

Drains, natural water, etc. will be made safe and/or inaccessible to children. No poisonous or hazardous plants will be kept on the premises. Any doors fitted with glass (i.e. patio doors) will have safety glass or covered with

protective plastic film. Adequate public liability insurance will be kept up-to-date and in place. Potentially hazardous equipment is securely anchored and/or stored out of reach. Gas and electrical appliances and fittings conform to safety requirements, are properly

guarded and do not pose a hazard to children. Appropriate annual safety checks are carried out and certificates will be made available for inspection by CSSIW.

There are clearly defined procedures for emergency evacuation of the premises. Fire drills will be carried out approximately once a month (in a variety of different weathers, lighting levels, etc) as I understand that young children benefit from more frequent practice. Accurate records will be kept to the satisfaction of the Fire Safety Officer and are kept for inspection in a fire logbook and safety certificates are obtained as required.

All doors will be kept free of obstructions in case of emergency. Fire blankets, extinguishers, alarms and smoke detectors conform to BS EN standards are

provided as necessary. These are checked frequently and kept in full working order. Any recommendations made by a Fire Safety Officer will be complied with and adequate

precautions will be taken against the risk of fire. There is a procedure for safe conduct of any outings. Records are kept about vehicles in

which children are transported, including insurance details and a valid current MOT certificate.

Car seats appropriate to the age and height of the child will be used when transporting children.

Parental Permission/Consent Forms Child’s Name Parent’s Name Parent’s Contact Numbers Parent’s Contact Details

Internet Usage The internet is an incredible resource for children to access, support for their homework, chatting to friends etc, but it can also be a very dangerous place for them. They can be exposed to inappropriate material, harassment and bullying, viruses and hackers and be conned into giving away personal information. They can also be vulnerable to online grooming by paedophiles.

As a childminder I offer children the opportunity to use the computer/tablet and the internet; however I have introduced a range of procedures to ensure their safety.

I have a filter on my computer that blocks out most inappropriate material I do not permit children to go onto chat rooms I check the children’s emails to ensure that they are not being bullied or sending anything

inappropriate I talk to the children about the websites they are using I am always nearby so can keep an eye out on what websites they are visiting I check the history on the computer regularly I discuss with the children about the importance of keeping safe online, not forwarding on

chain letters, not talking to people they don’t know, not giving out personal information that could enable people to identify them, to tell me if they are worried about anything and to never arrange to meet anyone they have spoken to online.

The children are only allowed to use the webcam under supervision

I am also aware of the need to limit the time children spend on computers and will develop strategies to ensure that they spend a balance of time engaged in ICT and other activities. Photo Permission Whilst your child is in my care I will be taking photographs for a variety of different purposes. I know that some parents are concerned about this and therefore I request that you complete this form, in order that I may comply fully with your wishes.

Please indicate which of the following you give your consent to: Child’s 'Learning Journal' My personal photograph album My Childminding Display Board/Portfolio My Childminding Promotional Literature My Childminding Website My Course work for Qualifications None of the above No payments will be made for the taking/using of photographs of your child

Video games I have the following video game resources that are available for children to use in my care; ipad V-tech Leapad

These games can be very helpful in developing skills such as: Hand eye co-ordination Timing Turn taking Educational

However I feel that the time spent on these should be limited. I will discuss with parents on a regular basis the games that they are happy for their children to be playing and how long I will allow them to play. I will work with you to develop strategies for limiting the time played so as for it not to become an issue with your child. For example time warnings, providing memory cards so games can be saved etc.

I will not allow any child to play with games that are of a violent nature. If your child wishes to bring games with them to play I would be grateful if you would discuss with me first, as I care for children of all ages and I need to ensure the suitability of them. Swimming Swimming is arguably the best form of exercise: Swimming is a workout for the whole body and uses all major muscle groups Keeps lungs and heart healthy and joints flexible Less stressful on joints and muscles than other forms of exercise Boost strength, stamina and suppleness Excellent calorie burner and an excellent form of cardio vascular exercise Relaxing Sociable and fun!

However as a registered childminder I must ensure that all activities are as safe as possible for the children in my care. I have therefore put the following procedures in place: I will follow the guidelines of the pool regarding the ratio of children to responsible adult. I will be in the pool at all times with the children.

All non-swimmers must remain in the shallow end of the pool and wear armbands or a life vest.

Children will be closely supervised in the changing rooms. Children should be provided with a suitable costume, towel and any necessary resources such as arm bands, life vest etc.

My child is: A Non-swimmer A Novice Swimmer A Competent Swimmer

Physical Contact As a CSSIW registered childminder I am very aware that each child has differing needs. Some children like to be affectionate and show it through hugs, kisses etc others are not so tactile. I am happy to hug, kiss (head or cheek) hold hands, cuddle, tickle etc your child providing both you and your child are happy with this. I would never force a child to do any of the above if it makes them feel uncomfortable.

I will restrain a child only if they are at risk of inflicting harm on themselves or others. I will separate children if they are fighting. I will restrain a child if they try and run into the road etc. If I do need to restrain your child I will document it in my Accident/Incident book and ask you to sign the record. This is to protect all parties.

I will also need to have some physical contact with your child in order to ensure hygiene routines are carried out. For example the washing of hands, faces and teeth and the wiping of noses. I am happy to assist with toileting according to the age and stage of ability of the child and to change nappies if required. If necessary I will change a child’s clothes if they have had an accident. Applying Sun Cream The damaging effects of exposure to the sun on young skin have recently been well documented. I will do everything I can, working in partnership with you, to ensure that your child is protected. During summer months please apply to your child a long-lasting, high factor sun cream before arriving at the premises.

Please provide me with: Sun Cream suitable for your child (high factor) Sun hat (preferably a legionnaires hat to protect the neck) A thin top/cardigan/t-shirt with long sleeves

I will ensure that your child uses the sun cream that you have provided and wears the hat. I will also avoid spending prolonged periods of time outdoors during the hottest part of the day, and when out will try and protect your child by finding shady areas and using a sunshade on the pushchair. I will encourage your child to drink water regularly to prevent dehydration. Health care I agree to abide by the terms set out below regarding the protocol for the healthcare and wellbeing of my child. To follow childminding regulations guiding the administration of medicine or treatment for my child (long and short term) with prior written permission.

Understand the need for the recording of Accidents or Incidents by the childminder and that I will receive a copy.

Acknowledge that the childminder will record any existing injuries in the accident/incident/medication book which I will be required to sign.

Permission to seek emergency medical assistance/treatment of my child where necessary.

Transporting in a vehicle The safety of your child is paramount and I have therefore put together the following procedures regarding the transportation of children in my car.

I have a full, clean driving license, which is available for you to see on request. I will ensure my car is in road worthy condition by having it serviced regularly. I will ensure it complies with all legislation, MOT, Car Tax etc. I will ensure it is covered by Business Use Car Insurance and the Certificate is available for

you to see. I will avoid where possible taking your child to petrol stations, by filling up my car before or

after my minded hours. I will ensure all car seats are correctly fitted, age and stage appropriate for the children

using them and that they are correctly strapped into them. I will ensure that the child safety locks are in use on my car. I will always carry a mobile telephone with me in case of an emergency but will not answer it

whilst driving. I will return calls on my return. I will always carry identification for me and the minded children in case of an emergency. I will always carry a First Aid kit in the car in case of an emergency. I will never leave a child unattended in a car. I will teach your child about the dangers of cars and roads, in an age appropriate way. I will advise you in advance if we are making any special trips or long trips in the car. If your child suffers from travel sickness please let me know immediately. Juice I provide fresh drinking water and milk freely for all children in my care. I do understand that some children will not drink milk or water and so will need to given an alternative choice wherever necessary.

I will allow my child to have the following: Fresh fruit juice, diluted (1 part juice to 10 parts water) Squash No juice to be given

Page 41: Childminding Documents - Holywell Childmindertanyaslittletykes.webs.com/Docs/Childminding booklet.pdf · Childminding Documents . Contents Statement of Purpose 3 Child’s Information

Medication I am happy to give your child non-prescribed medication, such as cough mixture, Calpol or nurofen, teething gel etc, but only if you have signed a parental permission form for me to do so.

This permission form will be regularly reviewed to ensure that there are no changes, for example a child may no longer be able to take some medication or may need an additional form.

Even though you may have signed a form, I will still contact you by telephone to check that I can administer this medication. This is to protect your child, you and myself. It is vital that you inform me of any medication you may have given your child before they arrive into my care. I need to know what medicine they have had, the dose and time given.

I will ensure that all medication given to me will be stored correctly and I will check that it is still within its expiry date.

If your child has a self-held medication please obtain an additional one for me to be kept at my home. Older children can easily forget to bring home an inhaler. What could be a simple puff of Ventalin then turns into a major incident and a trip to the hospital. If your child has acute allergies and carries/needs an epipen, please discuss the matter with me. I may need additional training to administer these forms of medication.

If your child needs to take medication prescribed by a doctor, please discuss this with me. I will need you to sign an additional permission form. In some cases a child on antibiotics may be asked not to attend for 2-3 days in case they react to the medication and to prevent the spread of an infection to others.

All medicine given to me to administer must be in its original bottle/container and not decanted. It must have the manufacturers guidelines on it and if a prescription medication the details from the Doctor/pharmacy.

I will record all medication administered in my book and request a parental signature at the end of each day.

If you have any concerns regarding medication please do not hesitate to discuss them with me.

Extreme Weather Conditions (snow, ice, fog or floods etc) As a CSSIW registered childminder I am responsible for the health and safety of all children in my setting. There may be occasions when adverse weather conditions force me to take action which may affect my setting. If after risk assessing I deem journeys by car, foot or public transport extremely hazardous and we may be putting ourselves in potential danger by travelling, we will not go.

Severe heat may also force us to change our plans. Children will play in the shade wherever possible, encouraged to wear sunhats and drink extra water. On very hot days we may postpone any planned trips or activities and cool down with ‘water play’ in the garden. Please dress your child in appropriate loose clothing and apply sun cream before arriving – I am happy to reapply sun cream regularly during the day.

If your child's school closes due to adverse weather, please do not assume I can provide care for your child if they do not normally attend during school hours. I have to ensure I do not breach my CSSIW registration.

In the event of a power failure, burst water main, fire etc, I shall do everything I can for my setting to remain open while ensuring we are all safe. In an extreme situation I may need to contact you and ask you to collect your child.

Please be assured that in any situation, your children and my family's safety are my first and only priority and I hope that you will be able to trust me to make the best decision for the welfare of all involved.
