It was a very sombre changing room following the Brumbies game and it’s not a feeling we want to experience again any-time soon.

We feel the responsibility of performing with heart and enthusiasm keenly, so to fail to display these characteristics last week is disappointing for us all.That said, we believe that we can turn this around quickly and as a group, are committed to doing so.

Playing the Lions represents an opportunity to get our season back on track and we have focused this week on rugby fundamentals including skill execution and decision making. Aspects which have operated well previously, but which have been rusty for the past month or so.

As coaches, we have great faith in our playing roster and know that we are capable of performing with more sting, accuracy and competitive edge.

Chiefs Mana is a living thing for us all and our ambitions for this season are the same as 2012 and 2013. Welcome to the battle tonight and thank you all for your continued support.

Young Chiefs player Anton Lienert-Brown has been selected to represent the New Zealand U20 side in the IRB Junior World Championship that will be held in June in New Zealand.

Current Chiefs Ben Afeaki, Aaron Cruden, Brodie Retallick, Sam Cane, Gareth Anscombe, Robbie Robinson, Tawera Kerr-Barlow, Ben Tameifuna, Charlie Ngatai, Tom Marshall, Rhys Marshall, Nathan Harris, Brad Weber and Carl Axtens have all played for the New Zealand U20 side at the IRB event. Many of them were coached by Dave Rennie and Andrew Strawbridge who were involved during 2008-2010 winning reign of New Zealand. The side also won in 2011 but the trophy has not been in the New Zealand Rugby cabinet since then but it is something NZRU hopes to rectify this year with the home advantage.

The nineteen year old will be joined in the side by Chiefs Development players forwards Atunaisa Moli, Scott Mellow, Tau Koloamatangi, James Tucker, Troy Callander, Mitchell Jacobson, Lachlan Boshier, Epalahame Faiva and back Damian McKenzie.

Lienert-Brown has yet to play senior rugby or ITM Cup but has already made his Investec Super Rugby debut in one of the toughest rugby grounds in the world – Loftus Versfield in Pretoria against the Bulls in March.

After the match he was presented with his playing jersey and it something he will treasure. “It was really special so I have given it to my parents look after.”

The week later his brother Dan made his debut for the Crusaders against the Lions in Johannesburg. Dan was also a member of the 2013 New Zealand U20s.

Lienert-Brown was born in Christchurch and is the youngest of the family. He started playing rugby for Marist at the age of four. He recalls that everyone just ran in one pack following the ball like a swarm of bees.

He attended Ilam Primary School in Ricarton and his fondest memory is being a House Captain in his final year at junior school and winning the House Cup.

“It was a big buzz to win the House Cup in those days,” he said.

After primary school he went to Kirkwood Intermediate where he played prop. “I was a chunky monkey right up until my second year of high school, then I grew taller so had to move from the front row.

Lienert-Brown was a product of Christchurch Boys High School and enjoyed being with his mates everyday and the amount of sporting opportunity the school offered.

He first cracked the school First XV in Year 12 where played mostly at centre and wing. In the final year of school he moved to second five and won the prestigious Press Cup.

Last year Anton was offered a place by the Waikato Academy and joined the Chiefs Development so moved to Hamilton to study sports and leisure. The year didn’t go as planned and Anton didn’t play much rugby as he dislocated his shoulder in March at Chiefs Development training and required surgery.

His rehab was a long process and he learned the reality of rugby injuries. Late last year he had a meeting with the Chiefs coaches to see if he wanted to be in the wider training group, an opportunity that he had always dreamed of.

“I was really happy to make the Wider Training Squad and was hugely excited about the campaign ahead.”

His family are still based in Christchurch and although he doesn’t get home much he keeps in regular contact with his parents and is grateful that when the earthquakes hit they lived in the side of town that was not too badly affected. “We have cracks in our house but that is nothing compared to other people,” he commented. He still rates his Mum’s home cooking as his favourite meal of choice.

Anton feels that being under the Chiefs coaches and the steep learning curve he has been on over the last six months contributed to his selection in the New Zealand U20s side.

“The Chiefs environment is outstanding, everyone is very supportive especially being young,” said the talented young player.

Lienert-Brown says the biggest things he has learned so far is the importance of doing your role properly and the little micro skills that makes a difference between the levels of rugby.

He flats with two other Chiefs debutants James Lowe and Matt Symons and enjoys home life. “It is a pretty organised flat.” Outside of rugby he enjoys hanging out with mates but admits there is not a lot of time to do other things but he wouldn’t have it any other way.

The New Zealand Squad will assemble prior to the IRB Junior World Championship on 20 May 2014, in Mount Maunganui where they will play the Chiefs Development side on the 28 May and will be based in Auckland from 29 May.

Born in Auckland, twenty-three year old Chiefs utility back Tom Marshall has been a welcome addition to the Chiefs side but he didn’t start out as your typical rugby player. Marshall lived in South Auckland’s league capital Mangere Bridge for the first seven years of his life but played soccer from the age of four until he was ten years old.

Seeking a better lifestyle, when he was ten years old, his Mum and Dad packed his older brother and sister and Tom up to move to sunny Nelson.

It was in Nelson at Tahunanui Primary School that he developed his love of sports, particularly cross country. Marshall played his first game of rugby for Nelson Rugby Football Club at lock before shifting to first five-eighth which is where he stayed during his time at primary school and Nelson Intermediate.

It wasn’t until he went to Nelson College and started playing for the First XV that he began playing at second five-eighth and fullback. When he was in 6th form his side won the prestigious Canterbury Press Cup. In his seventh form he played in the school’s top team alongside his fellow Chiefs team mate James Lowe.After school, Marshall studied sports science at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. In 2010, his second year of studying, he made the Tasman Makos ITM Cup side and the New Zealand U20s side.

Marshall was under the guidance of Chiefs coach Dave Rennie as part of the 2010 Junior World Championship. The New Zealand team won the tournament in Argentina with a side that included Marshall’s Chiefs team mates Tawera Kerr-Barlow and Charlie Ngatai.

Winning the Junior World Championship was a real highlight for the lad from Nelson. Marshall said “To win the Junior World Championships was simply awesome!”

The following year Marshall made his Investec Super Rugby debut in 2011 against the Waratahs in Nelson.

To this day Marshall is the only active Super Rugby player to have made his debut in Nelson.

He spent three seasons playing for the Crusaders. In 2013 he played more minutes than any other Crusader which put him in eighth ranking in the Investec Super Rugby competition, racking up 42 games for the side.

Meanwhile his big brother James made his Investec Super Rugby debut for the Hurricanes against the Crusaders in Wellington in 2013. Tom said playing against his brother was probably more of a special moment for his Mum and Dad.

“Once you get on the field those sorts of things go by the wayside and you just concentrate on the job at hand but I think Mum and Dad were pretty stoked to be able to watch us both at once.”

Before he moved to the Chiefs, Marshall had a stellar season with the Tasman Makos, winning the ITM Cup Championship with a side which featured fellow Chiefs Tevita Koloamatangi and James Lowe.

Marshall’s versatility, high work rate, strong ball carry skills and good character appealed to the Chiefs coaches so they enticed him to Chiefs Country.

Marshall is happy with his decision, believing it was the right move to further his rugby career. “I am having a good time here. The Chiefs environment is really enjoyable. The boys have made me feel very welcome and the coaches are awesome,’ said Marshall

Marshall didn’t have the ideal start to his time at the Chiefs. He broke his thumb at pre-season training and required an operation which kept him out of Investec Super Rugby for the first two matches. He finally made his debut for the Chiefs against the Stormers on the 14 March and scored a try right on halftime in the 36-20 win.

Outside of rugby he enjoys fishing and tennis but he states that he seldom has much time for either these days and with Super Rugby and ITM Cup, the fishing might have to wait until Christmas!

The Bank Bar and Brasserie is part of the Lawrenson Group which owns 13 popular hospitality establishments that are well known in Chiefs country including, The Outback Inn, Bluestone Steakhouse, Shenanigans Irish Pub and Furnace Restaurant and Bar.

John Lawrenson, the CEO of the Lawrenson Group said “I have had a long term association with the Chiefs and the cheerleaders so it was a natural progression for us to formalize the relationship by sponsoring the cheerleaders.”

Lawrenson has been in business partnerships with several former Chiefs players and knows many of the cheerleaders. He appreciates how important it is to provide entertainment in today’s market and the work the cheerleaders put in.

“The Lawrenson Group are focused on entertaining people so it is a great fit for us to align ourselves with the Chiefs who entertain people with the style of rugby they play and The Bank Cheerleaders who provide entertainment for the fans at the match,” said Lawrenson.

Drury Lane Dance Studio dance school owner Kerry Davis was brought in to manage the squad. Kerry is highly committed and has been in charge of the talented group for the past eight years. They had a year off in 2012 but due to fan demand they were back in 2013.

The selection process to get into The Bank Cheerleaders is a very serious and rigorous process. Auditions are held every year to find the 18-strong squad for the up coming season.

Audition information is placed on the Chiefs website at the beginning of the year and applicants are required to be over 18 years of age with a minimum of two years dance experience. All previous year’s performers have to re-audition every year.

At this year’s auditions Kerry and her panel were required to reduce the 35 contenders down to 18. A

task Kerry described as being quite difficult. Kerry has over forty years experience in the dance industry.

“We are very fortunate that we get a high standard of applicants which always makes it quite difficult to select our squad,“ said Kerry.

To be part of The Bank Cheerleaders requires serious commitment. Dancers must be from the Chiefs region and attend compulsory twice-a-week trainings in Hamilton. Two of this year’s squad are from Mt Maunganui.

Each home game The Bank Cheerleaders are required to learn six new choreographed routines to perform at half time to keep the fans entertained during the 12 minute break.

When asked what the challenges are that The Bank Cheerleaders face at a game, Kerry states that wet dew on the ground and the cold can be challenges which is why they focus on dance routines as apposed to acrobatic routines. “We never can predict what the ground surface is going to be like so we have to have routines that work in any conditions.”

But regardless of the surface condition, one thing remains constant and that is when the half time whistle blows, The Bank Cheerleaders will be out on the field giving it 100% to entertain the passionate rugby supporters in the stands.
