Dialoguewith CEO

First of all, I would like to congratulate you on the advent of the

New Year entreating Allah, the Almighty, to enable us to achieve all

our objectives in the oil sector. However, I perceive that the step of

launching the awareness campaign of KPC 2030 strategy is evidence

for following the right direction in accomplishing these objectives.

We hope to build efficiently the future of Kuwait and move from the

phase of planning and preparation to the phase of implementation while

proceeding towards the implementation of this strategy.

Indisputably, the oil sector is the key support of the Kuwaiti economy;

in addition, it is the basis on which Kuwaitis have built their past

and present, and they will also build their future. Consequently, KPC

allotted its 2020 strategy in 2001. Moreover, all sectors affiliated to

KPC have diligently taken part in achieving its goals. Additionally, KPC

has updated it in pursuance of the latest developments on the local and

international level. KPC 2030 strategic directions have been allotted

after that to consolidate the corporation’s image and bolster its role as a

successful pioneering institution which looks forward to a better future.

It is further aimed to develop capabilities to achieve the objectives of

the sector.

I would like here to confirm that the responsibility of establishing the

future of Kuwait lies in our hands without any exceptions; accordingly,

we should put forth more devoted efforts to resume achieving the journey

of construction under the wise leadership of HH the Amir Sheikh Sabah

Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

However, I believe that the oil sector’s personnel shoulder a big part of

this responsibility thanks to the substantial importance of the sector in

supporting the national economy.

Under the slogan “Challenge to move forward”

CEO launches an awareness campaign on KPC 2030 strategic directions

Under the auspices of CEO of Kuwait

Petroleum Corporation Mr. Farouq Al-

Zanki, Planning Department launched

an awareness campaign in an effort to

increase the awareness of the personnel

of the oil sector on KPC 2030 strategic

directions.

This came in a celebration KPC orga-

nized on Wednesday December 21, 2011

in the lobby of the oil complex.

The celebration commenced with a key-

note speech given by the presenter of the

celebration Mr. Ali Murad, Manager of

Public Relations Department, who wel-

comed the attendants, indicating such

incident is a prominent step in the histo-

ry of the Kuwaiti oil sector particularly

the campaign will take part effectively

in fulfilling the goals of the corporation

and its subsidiaries.

After that, Mr. Sami Al-Yaqout, Man-

ager of Occupational Health & Safety

Department, highlighted the importance

of safety in this domain.

On his part, Al-Zanki said, “Indisput-

ably, the oil sector is considered the key

support of the Kuwaiti economy. It is the

basis on which Kuwait’s economy has

been established for the last seventy-five

years. It is the basis on which Kuwaitis

have built their past and present and they

will also build their future.”

He added KPC allotted in 2001 its stra-

tegic directions until 2020 as all sectors

affiliated to KPC and its subsidiaries

have participated in carrying them out

so far. Yet, there were several local and

international issues and developments

which cannot be disregarded. Therefore,

it has become necessary to update such

strategic directions to cope with them;

thus, the 2030 strategy has been allot-

ted.

Al-Zanki stressed that such strategic di-

rections will partake in consolidating the

image of KPC and its role in the society

as a pioneering successful institution

looks forward to better future; whereby,

it allots plans and develops capabilities

to accomplish its goals.

He further made clear that KPC has al-

lotted the 2030 strategic directions as a

road map through which it will develop

3

the oil sector and optimize the Kuwaiti

hydrocarbon substances.

He finally urged the oil sector’s person-

nel to spare no effort to resume complet-

ing such substantial phase in the history

of the sector which shoulders consider-

able responsibility requires more pa-

tience and perseverance.

The celebration, which was attended by

a large number of employees, MDs of

KPC’s subsidiaries and their deputies,

was distinguished with special atmo-

sphere as it eliminated the ambiguity of

several questions regarding the objec-

tives of these strategic directions, how

to apply them , and the personnel’s role

in this respect. This is what Mr. Farouq

Al-Zanki successfully underlined in his

keynote speech.

It is noteworthy that Planning Depart-

ment and Media Relations Department

launched a large number of electronic

messages and some marketing phrases

in the lanes of the oil sector’s complex

associated with the logo of the KPC

2030 strategic directions whose arrows

refer to the oil companies.

Administrative Skills (3)

Time management…the

real value of life

Time is one of the significant elements in our daily life;

however, some of us consider it the most valuable human

resources. It is said that the person who cannot manage

his time cannot manage anything else; whereby, the prin-

ciple of time management is one of the basics which all

personnel should regard while performing their activities.

Scientific studies confirm that the good management of

time is liaison to the good performance and productiv-

ity. In addition, it is considered key element in all KPC

activities on the planning, administrative and operational

levels.

The concept of Time Management

Time management means to optimize effectively the

available resources as well as investing time effectively

to achieve the required goals in a timely manner. Accord-

ingly, time management means to control, organize and

invest time for the good of the individual, the institu-

tion and the society. Thereby, the daily duties should be

positively distributed and properly planned particularly

the future activities not to waste time and to succeed in

achieving more duties in time.

Benefits of managing time well

In his book about time management, Dr. Ibrahim Al-Feki

mentioned a short tale about a woodsman was busy cut-

ting trees seriously in the forest; yet his ax was not sharp

enough. However, a person passed by him and noticed the

situation. He accordingly said to the woodsman, “Why do

not you sharpen your ax?”

The woodcutter then answer exhaustedly, “Do not you

see that I’m busy?”

The woodsman, from such tale, did not seemingly un-

derstand that if he sharpened the ax, he would be able to

cut trees faster with little effort and he could move also

to another tree since organizing time helps finalize duties

faster with little effort. Moreover, it helps avail of op-

portunities well.

Managing time seriously enables you to achieve the best results in

work and reduce the number of possible mistakes as well as improv-

ing your productivity in general. It also helps you on the personal

level to fulfill your goals and dreams, relieve the pressure of work

and life and spend more time with the family or in entertainment or

even rest besides spending more time in self-development.

Anyhow, we will mention some behaviors and beliefs that lead to

saving and managing time well as follows:

Identify your goals and keep always the “To-do list”.

Allot certain time to finalize any task and keep an eye always on

time while executing it.

Be systematic and start your work in a clean and tidy location; in

addition, keep the items you only need in your office to perform your

duties.

Reduce your tension and pressure during work. Try to say “no” in

the time you should say it.

Finalize any duty you initiate, do not keep it incomplete. Do not

disregard the word “Thanks”.

Organize your files and documents properly to recognize them

easily.

 Avoid ambiguity in your writings.

Do not waste time in achieving sophisticated transactions.

Simplify procedures as much as possible; in addition, give your

employees the opportunity to manage minor affairs and train them on

how to finalize them.

Avoid tattling, reading newspapers and unplanned visits which are

paid by colleagues during the working hours because this depletes the

time available for achieving duties.

You should know how to control your time and do not waste it in

paying sudden visits, unsuccessful meetings, making extra phone calls,

hesitating in taking the decision, fearing to commit mistakes, inability

to order priorities, compliments and repeated postponement of duties.

Risks of fireworks

By Mohammed Tahous Al-Tahous

Some of us used to express their de-

light in occasions, feasts, national

and religious celebrations through

launching fireworks whether on the

level of children, individuals or even

countries which used to organize their

national celebrations using

fireworks. These fire-

works are similar to

what takes place

in the interna-

tional festivals;

however, the

dangers and

harms of these

fireworks are

equal to the joy

they add to cel-

ebrations.

These substances are

not only dangerous against

their users, but they jeopardize also

the lives of those who are available in

the surrounding area of such fireworks

since they sometimes cause fires, dis-

tortions lead to permanent or tempo-

rary disabilities. In addition, they may

harm properties due to fires, contami-

nation and noise resulted from them.

Definition of fireworks:

Fireworks are simple explosives which

are made of combustible chemical

substances. They create several colors

when they flame; however, it is pos-

sible to control the degree and type of

the colors in line with kinds of chemical

substances used in making such explo-

sives. These fireworks are multi-shaped; some

of which explode in air to yield various

shapes include numerous stars of vari-

ous colors and shapes. These fireworks

echo distinguished sounds in series and

form fascinating engineering shapes

and colors.

Kinds of fireworks:

There is special kind of fireworks made

for children to play with it in residential

complexes; however, this kind of fire-

works causes serious harms against the

child and those who are available in the

surrounding area. There is also another

kind used by the country regularly and

much safely since the country takes all

required precautionary procedures in

coordination with individuals special-

ized in these fireworks such:

 Firecrackers which may explode

among the user’s fingers once the fuse

flames.

Spark whirls which can burn clothes

and skins.

Rockets which usually hit the face

and harm eyes.

Risks of fireworks

The phenomenon of using fireworks

and explosives is one of the negative

phenomena spread in the society al-

though healthful and social warnings

are published to raise the awareness

of such fireworks. Yet, they are still

sold widely particularly at the time of

launching of celebrations. In addition,

the sparks, light and temperature result-

ing from such fireworks are considered

key reason for harming the user’s body

particularly the area of the eye in case

the child is exposed to the fire directly.

This harm may lead to losing the eye

since the conjunctiva of the eye and

lid are burning from such fireworks.

Moreover, they are considered substan-

tial reason for chemical and physical

contamination as the odor coming out

from burning these substances is harm-

They are considered substantial reason for chemical and physical contamination

15

ful environmentally and it may cause

suffocation in some cases.

Safety instructions:

The international laws impose strict

procedures to sell and use fireworks;

whereby, they allot several stipulations

to deal with them such as the follow-

ing:

1- To meet the international specifica-

tions allotted in this regard.

2- To take all required health and safety

procedures.

3- To be committed to the criteria iden-

tified to transport such fireworks.

4- To allot certain specifications for the

warehouses of these fireworks.

5- To store such fireworks far away

from the residential areas and stores of

foodstuffs; in addition to banning us-

ing such fireworks on roads and inside

houses and public shops.

Accordingly, US National Fire Protec-

tion Association (NFPA) issued a re-

port in 2005 about fireworks in which

it mentioned that the percentage of in-

juries yielded from fireworks are very

high even when using licensed kinds.

In addition, the risks of the fireworks

jeopardize the lives of persons who use

them, transport them and store them

and even those who are present in the

surrounding area.

On its part, American Academy of Op-

tometry invited people to attend shows

of fireworks instead of using them in

houses in an effort to satiate the desire

of watching and enjoying them without

exposing to the direct negative impacts

of such fireworks. This step is aimed to

reduce the opportunities of registering

casualties particularly in random areas.

Tips followed when using fireworks:

Some specialized American Centers

such Center Disease Control, National

Council on Fireworks Safety and US

Consumer Product Safety Commission

commend following up the following

safety instructions while using fire-

works:

Keep a distance from the firework

particularly after lighting the fuse as

any injury influences negatively the

movements of children.

Take care of curious children who

are eager to check the fireworks which

were lit but without launching their

sparks.

Keep yourself away from the loca-

tions of using and launching fireworks.

 Monitor cautiously what takes place

and enjoy it from a proper distance.

 Read carefully the safety instructions

labeled on the fireworks.

Avoid using the cheap kinds of fire-

works which do not include instructions

of using them. Children should be kept

away from such activities.

Put the fireworks on soft and flat sur-

faces which are void of papers or any

combustible items while lighting their

fuse. In addition, do not try to re-light

any fuse again after it failed to ex-

plode.

Don’t light fireworks in glass or met-

al pots.

Keep a bucket of water near the fire-

works to use it in case a fire flares up.

Store fireworks in dry and cold plac-

es. They should be far away from any

resource of fire or heat.

Consequently, we urge some govern-

ment authorities which have direct com-

munication with citizens and residents

such Education and Higher Education

Ministry to intensify theri substantial

role in increasing the awareness of stu-

dents and their guardians on the risks of

fireworks. Therefore, it should harness

some educational available means to

shed light on this hazardous phenom-

enon against children, properties and

money through educating the students

and guide them on such risks through

daily school broadcast, brochures and

lectures. Moreover, the official authori-

ties such Commerce and Industry Min-

istry Kuwait Municipality and Interior

Ministry to take the necessary legal

procedures to deter such malpractices;

whereby, it is preferable to apply laws

and impose strict penalties against the

commercial shops which promote and

sell such fireworks; in addition to con-

fiscating the quantities available in

markets.

Moreover, Health Ministry shoulders a

significant role epitomized in increas-

ing the awareness of the society on the

risks and health harms resulting from

such fireworks through organizing lec-

tures and seminars to spotlight the risks

of such activities.

Finally, I hope I managed to make clear

in this article the rules and protective

procedures which should be taken in
