The cry for freedom expressed during the Arab Spring resonates with similar awakenings throughout human history. Tonight’s concert explores distinctly different music from different eras and parts of the globe, finding the common threads that bind humanity. Arabic melodies find their counterpart in African-American spirituals, and Mozart himself told a tale of freedom from bondage in his Turkish-inflected Seraglio. Together, they speak to the eternal quest for liberty shared across the globe.

These three pieces—Mozart’s Seraglio, Shaheen’s Oud Concerto in C Minor, and Dawson’s Negro Folk Symphony—stir the deep human yearning for freedom, both for ourselves and for others. All three of these pieces play with how the single voice can be a powerful force in the collective struggle to shake off the chains of oppression.

“Too many notes.” That was the critique famously given by Emperor Joseph II to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Abduction from the Seraglio (Overture). Though that critique’s historical authenticity—and the 26 year old Mozart’s subsequent reply that “there as many notes as there needs to be”—is questioned by many scholars, the story nicely captures the dashing, verbose feeling of both the piece and the young Mozart.

First sponsored by a company set up by the Austrian Emperor Joseph II to perform works in German to counter the popularity of Italian opera, the young Mozart’s Seraglio was one of their early—and few—successes. The libretto was adapted—though the libretto’s original author says stolen—from an earlier piece by Christoph Bretzner. However, once it landed in Mozart’s hands, it was transformed into an instant classic. The light-hearted and adventurous opera follows the hero Belmonte as he attempts to save his love Konstanze, who is being held in the seraglio- the concubine palace- of the Pasha Selim. The opera plays frequently with a Westernized version of Turkish music, often dipping into common musical and cultural stereotypes that Europe held of the Ottoman Empire at the time. From the sensuality of the titular harem and the exotic flair of the Turkish people, to the despotic authority of the Pasha (which, it should be noted, is inverted in the end by the Pasha’s act of forgiveness), the opera is an adventure into the “strange” and “exotic” world living next to Mozart’s Austria. The overture we will hear tonight is a light-hearted flight into this realm of Pashas, harems, Janissary bands, and romance.

The origins of the oud—literally “twig” or “flexible rod” and the titular instrument of our next peice, Oud Concerto in C Minor by Simon Shaheen—stretch back into myth. According to Farabi—a great Muslim scientist and philosopher—the oud was invented by Lamech, the sixth grandson of Adam. According to this legend, Lamech hung the body of his dead son from a tree. The first oud was inspired by the shape of his son’s bleached skeleton.

Even outside its mythic origins, the soulful sound of the oud was thought to possess medicinal properties. In the 9th century, the jurist Miwardi extolled its use in treating illness. “The oud invigorates the body. It places the temperament in equilibrium. It is a remedy... It calms and revives hearts.” Its sound is the voice of the soul- mellow yet profound, longing for love yet resigned to loneliness. It is said that the soul at first railed against the imprisonment of the body- it was only through the music of the oud that it could be coaxed back and reside in peace. Similarly, when the heart is unfeeling or burdened in bondage, the oud helps to wake it and shake off the slumber of apathy.

The Oud Concerto in C Minor by Simon Shaheen masterfully explores all of these facets of the oud and more. The virtuoso conductor and musician Shaheen—who grew up in Haifa, but spent most of his weekends in a Palestinian town under Israeli sovereignty—knows the oud intimately, as he began playing the instrument when he was five. He later emigrated to the United States and became a citizen, after studying music in New York City. Shaheen expertly

weaves the powerful sound of the oud with the rest of the symphony as we travel through the valleys and peaks of the human soul: through its deep melancholy to its tentative and fumbling joys; from the building, percussive beat of a confident heart yearning for freedom and community to the romance of loves present and past.

Our final piece is the Negro Folk Symphony by William Levi Dawson. Born in Alabama, Dawson moved to Chicago to study with professor Felix Borowski and the American Conservatory of Music. Dawson was a dedicated teacher, musician, and composer. After serving as a trombonist in area orchestras, including the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, he moved again to Kansas City to teach in the public school system but finally returned to Alabama to teach for 25 years at the Tuskegee Institute.

Throughout his teaching career, he was committed to composing, with his first piece (Trio for Violin, Cello, and Piano) performed by the Kansas City Symphony Orchestra. After moving back to Alabama and the Tuskegee Institute, Dawson was best known for his arrangements of spirituals, like “Ezekiel Saw the Wheel,” “Jesus Walked the Lonesome Valley,” and “King Jesus is a-Listening.” In 1934, Dawson premiered one of these spirituals- tonight’s Negro Folk Symphony- with the Philadelphia Orchestra. It was a great success, and one which he kept working on. After Dawson visited West Africa, he revised the symphony in 1952 and incorporated the African rhythms he heard on the trip, to “convey the missing elements that were lost when Africans came into bondage outside their homeland.”

The symphony is broken into three movements: The Bond of Africa, The Hope in the Night, and finally O, le’ me shine, shine like a Morning Star! Opening the piece is a mournful theme played by a solo French horn, a calling out to find what was lost by the bondage and cruel interruption of slavery. This theme of “interruption” and breaking of communal chains is continued throughout the piece as beautiful melodies are interrupted by chromatic chords and not allowed to finish. As well, sudden bursts into traditional spirituals, energetic cascading codas, and stretches of tense, desperate melodies develop a dramatic, thematic cohesion to the symphony as the music desperately tries to fill that empty void. Though this theme of interruption is never fully resolved—as there will always be a “missing link” that slavery inflicted—in the end, Dawson’s brilliant symphony finds some solace and resolution through its reintroduction of spirituals and African rhythms into classical melodies, creating a distinctly American musical identity.

Symphony, the Atlanta Symphony, and Baltimore Symphony. Recipient of the 2007 Taki Concordia Fellowship, she has appeared jointly with Marin Alsop and Stefan Sanderling in highly acclaimed subscription concerts with the Baltimore Symphony, Colorado Symphony and Florida Orchestra.

In 2002, Ms. Chen was unanimously selected as Music Director of the Portland Youth Philharmonic in Oregon, the oldest of its kind and the model for many of the youth orchestras in the United States. During her five-year tenure with the orchestra, she led its sold-out debut in Carnegie Hall, received an ASCAP Award for Innovative Programming, and developed new and unique musicianship programs for the orchestra’s members. She was honored with a Sunburst Award from Young Audiences for her contribution to music education.

Born in Taiwan, Mei-Ann Chen has lived in the United States since 1989. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting from the University of Michigan, where she was a student of Kenneth Kiesler. Prior to that, she was the first student in New England Conservatory’s history to receive master’s degrees, simultaneously, in both violin and conducting. Ms. Chen also participated in the National Conducting Institute in Washington, D.C. and the American Academy of Conducting in Aspen.

Simon Shaheen, oud

Simon Shaheen dazzles his listeners as he deftly leaps from traditional Arabic sounds to jazz and Western classical styles. His soaring technique,

melodic ingenuity, and unparalleled grace have earned him international acclaim as a virtuoso on the oud and violin. A Palestinian, born in the village of Tarshiha in the Galilee, Shaheen’s childhood was steeped in music. His father, Hikmat Shaheen, was a professor of music and a master oud player. “Learning to play on the ‘oud from my father was the most powerful influence in my musical life,” Shaheen recalls. He began playing on the oud at the age of five, and a year later studying

violin at the Conservatory for Western Classical Music in Jerusalem. After graduating from the Academy of Music in Jerusalem in 1978, Shaheen was appointed its instructor of Arab music, performance, and theory. Two years later he moved to New York City to complete his graduate studies in performance at the Manhattan School of Music, and later in performance and music education at Columbia University.

Shaheen is one of the most significant Arab musicians, performers, and composers of his generation. His work incorporates and reflects a legacy of Arabic music, while it forges ahead to new frontiers, embracing many different styles in the process. This unique contribution to the world of arts was recognized in 1994 when Shaheen was honored with the prestigious National Heritage Award at the White House.

In addition to performing with his multiple ensembles Qantara, Quintet, the Near Eastern Music Ensemble and Arab Chamber Orchestra, Shaheen tours as a solo artist internationally and as a lecturer throughout the academic world promoting awareness to Arab music through lectures and workshop presentations. In 2008, Shaheen premiered his most ambitious work yet, Oud Concerto in C Minor with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. This composition is a milestone in Arab music history. In 2009 Simon directed the orchestral program Aswat (Voices) - Celebrating the Golden Age of Arab Music & Cinema, in association with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the University Musical Society at the University of Michigan. In 2011, Simon presented two new compositions; The Call, and expedition into the past/present/future of Arabic and Middle Eastern music, and Zafir, written for and performed with Imani Winds.

In the 1990s he released four albums of his own: Saltanah, Turath, Taqasim, and Simon Shaheen: The Music of Mohamed Abdel Wahab. He has contributed to soundtracks for The Sheltering Sky and Malcolm X, among others, and has composed the soundtrack for the United Nations sponsored documentary, For Everyone Everywhere.

Perhaps his greatest success has come with Blue Flame, where he leads his group, Qantara, on a labyrinthine journey through the world of fusion music to discover the heart of the Middle East. The album was nominated for eleven Grammy Awards. The Qantara ensemble toured worldwide during 2003 - 2006, playing concerts at such premiere festivals as WOMAD USA, WOMAD Sicily, Newport Jazz Festival, and Montreal Jazz Festival. Qantara’s appearances have included: Beiteddine Festival in Lebanon; Les Mediterranean in France; New York’s Central Park Summer Stage; Stern Grove International Festival in San Francisco; Chicago World Music Festival; Royce Hall in Los Angeles; University Musical Society in Ann Arbor; Walker Arts Center in Minneapolis; and International Souk Ukaz at the historic citadel in Amman, Jordan.

Since 1994, Shaheen has produced the Annual Arab Festival of Arts. Held in New York, the festival showcases the work of the

finest Arab artists, while presenting the scope, depth and quality of Arab culture. To continue this exposure to Arab music and culture, Shaheen founded the Annual Arabic Music Retreat in 1997.

In 2012, he began a new professorship and studies program at Berklee College of Music. “I teach violin, cello, and mandolin. And soon, hopefully we are going to incorporate some Middle Eastern instruments, like the oud, the qanun” says Shaheen.” What I’m bringing to Berklee is my experience as a Western classical musician, Arab traditional musician, and this eclectic fusion of music from around the world, which I grew up with. I speak five languages because I grew up with it; it’s not like I learned in later stages. So it’s part of me. Berklee is the place where I can bring all this experience, because the idea is not to create compartments of music, but to open the walls and let all these experiences seep into each other.”

CHICAGO S INFONIET TA H ISTORY

The year was 1987, and Maestro Paul Freeman had a decidedly different vision of what a symphony orchestra could, and should be. Paul had earned an international reputation through years of guest conducting all over the world and as Music Director of a number of orchestras in the US and Canada. He was the first African American on the podium of over fifty orchestras worldwide and had a huge catalog of recordings to his credit. By the mid-1980s he concluded that the time was right for a mid-sized orchestra dedicated to promoting diversity, inclusion, and innovative programming, and luckily for all of us, he decided that Chicago was the right place to do this.

The Chicago Sinfonietta performed for the first time in October of 1987. Concerts took place in River Forest at Rosary College and downtown at Orchestra Hall. The Sinfonietta was a different type of orchestra from the very beginning. The orchestra members, staff, board of directors, guest artists, and most importantly of all, the audience were of diverse backgrounds. No one had ever seen anything quite like this in classical music. And the music was different. Yes, the Sinfonietta could, and did play the standards to great critical acclaim. But under Paul’s leadership innovative concerts became a part of the Sinfonietta experience.

The rarely performed music by composers of color became a Sinfonietta staple, and introduced these symphonic gems to generations of concert-goers. Through recordings like the three-volume African Heritage Series, these lost compositions entered the classical music mainstream and brought acclaim and attention to deserving but unrecognized composers. Unusual instruments and musical styles like the bagpipes, steel drums, sitar, Indian Ghazal music, hip hop, and yes, even the ubiquitous cell phone became the centerpieces for some of the most daring musical collaborations any orchestra was programming. And partnerships with arts organizations and ensembles including the Luna Negra Dance Theater, the Apostolic Church of God Choir, the alternative rock group, Poi Dog Pondering, and others significantly broadened the orchestra’s programming palette.

The Sinfonietta experience quickly caught on and the orchestra’s audience and support grew through its early seasons. Due to Paul’s international reputation, European tours were booked resulting in six overseas trips during the first 17 years. Other highlights included two triumphant performances at the Kennedy Center, the recording of fourteen albums and CDs, a 2008 performance at Millennium Park attended by over 12,000 people, and a nine-year relationship with the Joffrey Ballet.

Paul’s passion for helping others and opening the doors of classical music to everyone was also expressed through the Sinfonietta’s educational and mentoring programs. Thousands of public school students have, and continue to benefit from the organization’s Audience Matters and SEED programs that place Sinfonietta musicians in classrooms, thereby inspiring the next generation of musicians and composers. The orchestra’s groundbreaking Project Inclusion program that provides two-year professional development fellowships to aspiring classical musicians from under-represented communities grew out of Paul’s life-long practice of mentoring and assisting young musicians. One young musician Paul helped by giving his very first professional performance opportunity to has gone on to become the most recognizable figure in classical music, Yo-Yo Ma. Mr. Ma performed a concert in 2011 in honor of Paul and recognized the unique role he and the Chicago Sinfonietta have played in the development of the field. Anthony McGill and Jeremy Jordan, two young and extremely talented African American musicians, performed with Yo-Yo that evening. The circle continues.

CHICAGO S INFONIET TA H ISTORY c o n t.

In 2009 Paul Freeman announced that he would retire at the end of the 2010-2011 Season and the Sinfonietta began its first Music Director search. The Board of Directors formed a selection committee and after a two-year, international search that began with over forty candidates and concluded with eight finalists performing podium auditions throughout the 2008-09 and 2009-2010 seasons, Mei-Ann Chen was unanimously selected as Paul Freeman’s successor. In May of 2011 Paul publicly conducted the orchestra for the final time in a nationally broadcast concert, and in a particularly emotional moment, passed his baton to Mei-Ann at the conclusion of the performance. A giant had left the stage, but his legacy lives on.

Mei-Ann Chen’s tenure began with a welcoming concert at Millennium Park attended by over 7,000 people. Her inaugural season in 2011-2012 also coincided with the orchestra’s move from its long time west suburban home in River Forest to Wentz Concert Hall in Naperville. The reviews and audience response for Maestro Chen’s debut season have been extraordinary, and the season concluded with the orchestra’s first recording in 10 years that will be released in 2013 on the Cedille Records label. In addition to these accomplishments, the Chicago Sinfonietta was named by ASCAP and the League of American Orchestras as the recipient of the 2011-12 Awards for Adventurous Programming for Mei-Ann’s first season of concerts. Her work was also recognized by the League of American Orchestras by being chosen as the recipient of the Helen M. Thompson Award that recognizes early career music directors who show exceptional

musical leadership and commitment to organizational vitality.

As the Chicago Sinfonietta begins the next twenty-five years of presenting one-of-a-kind concerts, inspiring young students to pursue music as a life-long passion or career, and serving as the model for diversity, inclusion and innovation, it is clear that Paul Freeman’s dream of a special orchestra in Chicago has become a reality.

CHICAGO S INFONIET TA EDUCATIONAL AND COM MUNIT Y OUTREACH

Audience Matters is the Chicago Sinfonietta’s core educational program. This program provides an immersive introduction to classical music for elementary school students in the Chicago Public School system. Through the program, students learn about the families of instruments in the orchestra from teaching artists – Sinfonietta musicians – who also relate composers, history, art, and architecture to the various periods of classical music. On multiple visits, musicians from different sections of the orchestra demonstrate their instruments through experiential tools, integrating visual, audio, and tactile elements to help the students learn. In addition, students and their families are invited to all Sinfonietta performances for the season. Over 1,000 students are participating in Audience Matters this year thanks to our generous donors.

SEED (Student Ensembles with Excellence and Diversity) provides mentoring for young musicians. The SEED Program identifies talented high school musicians and offers them a series of workshops and master classes taught by Chicago Sinfonietta teacher-musicians in small ensemble settings. The program concludes with a concert performed by the ensembles. The goal of this program is to both inspire and mentor these young artists, and encourage their professional growth for the future.

Project Inclusion Orchestra Fellowship (PIOF) and Project Inclusion Ensembles (PIE) are programs developed in 2007 and 2009 to identify, train, mentor, and ready orchestra musicians who are just beginning their pursuit of a professional career from diverse backgrounds, including, but not limited to diverse racial, ethnic, socioeconomic and geographic backgrounds, that are traditionally underrepresented in orchestras to compete for, and win positions in America’s orchestras. Through PIOF, the Sinfonietta offers each fellow selected the opportunity to rehearse and perform at every concert during their two-year involvement in the program. In addition, each fellow receives one-on-one coaching with the principal player in his or her section. Mentoring activities include the introduction of professional work skills that help to develop a well-rounded career in music and that provide realistic preparation to early career musicians seeking to enter the world of classical music. The program also gives guidance on, and experience with, how to interact with donors, board members, and how to serve as spokespeople for the organization. Added in 2009, PIE offers early career musicians the opportunity to rehearse and perform in chamber sized ensembles thereby gaining valuable experience as performers and freelance musicians. Thanks to support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, all Project Inclusion programs underwent review and revision in 2012. We are also delighted to welcome the Sphinx Organization as an official partner beginning in 2013.
