    VIRTUAL MAPS:

The Virtual Marathon system uses the Google Maps API to create a

virtual map that displays runner locations. The location of the runner isbased on how many miles they have run and is taken from the database. The

map also displays Landmarks, Incentives, and one of four initial

    routes.

Details on the program functionality of the Google Maps API can be foundathttp://code.google.com/apis/maps/.

The maps displayed by the Virtual Run program can be viewed two ways:

Group Map:o Displays all runners, Incentives, Landmarks, and the route

that belongs to the runner group.

Individual Runner Map:o Displays one runner, his or her route, nearby Landmarks, and

    Incentives.

For more information on the maps, please refer to the Student User Manual.

    ROUTE MANAGEMENT:

Routes used in the Virtual Run program are displayed by .kml files. These .kml files are created using Google Earth.

The important information contained in a .kml file can be viewed in atext editor (Notepad, WordPad, or Microsoft Office).

The information for the Virtual Marathon program is a sequence oflatitude and longitude coordinates located near the bottom of the file. If the .kml file does not contain the proper format of these

coordinates, then it will not be compatible with the Virtual Run

    program.

Each pair of coordinates is one point on the route, and the entire routeconsists of lines drawn from one point to the next.
