On behalf of the Chicago Elite Classic 2013 Board, we would like to thank you for attending our second annual event. Without your support, this monumental event could not be possible. This year’s event has summed up to be truly special, with some of the best basketball talent in the country playing on one floor, in one day. We will be able to showcase 16 ESPN Top 100 players in their respective classes, and a slew of NCAA bound collegiate athletes. With teams traveling from Washington DC to California, we are proud to bring to you the “cream of the crop” in high school basketball talent in the finest city in the world, Chicago. Clearly, this event could not be possible without our partners. The collective support of the City of Chicago (Mayor Rahm Emanuel), Nike, ABLE, Southern Wine & Spirits, Northern Trust, and a host of large and small Chicagoland businesses have made the dream of two truly visionary coaches (Coach Tyrone Slaughter and Coach Robert Smith) come true. We also would like to give special thanks to our champions of support this year (Don Jackson and Sandy Reynolds), as without your desire and dedication, this event would not be possible. Thank you all for believing in us and believing in our schools and kids. Once again, the theme of this year’s classic is promotion of nonviolence and nonviolent conflict resolution. Our slogan “Shoot Baskets, NOT Bullets” hopefully resonates throughout our city streets and neighborhoods. Although our theme is nonviolence, the draw is basketball. Basketball has a special place in so many hearts of Chicagoans. Hopefully this recipe will make a difference in all of our lives, but especially the lives of our youth. Our youth are our future, and our youth truly care and want to live in nonviolence. This was displayed in the overwhelming response that we received in our essay contest asking our kids to come up with their own ways to stop the violence here in Chicago. I want to congratulate our essay winners Jessica Jackson, David Foster and Kierra Lowe for their innovative and creative ways at ending the deadly plague of violence. Our youth are tomorrow’s leaders and their voices/ideas should be heard, recognized, and accepted. On behalf of the entire Chicago Elite Classic 2013 board and our partners, we thank you for attending “The Elite” this year and hope you enjoy the spectacular display of basketball talent.

Don’t forget that you can continue to follow us all year on:

CHICAGO ELITE CLASSIC 9

Whitney M. Young Magnet High School is very excited to host this annual event with a school partner,

Simeon Career Academy High School. Whitney Young is a college preparatory school 7th – 12th that

has been recognized by the United States Department of Education as a Blue Ribbon school for academic

excellence. It has also been recognized by U.S. News and World Report and Newsweek as one of the top

high schools in the country. Whitney Young is also known for its successful extracurricular activities. We

have won state titles in chess, girls and boys basketball, academic decathlon, cross country, and debate.

We have also been awarded gold medal status for our band program. Our motto is “Where Academic

Excellence is the Standard” and we attempt to instill this excellence in every aspect of our school.

We are also elated to engage in meaningful partnerships with various companies and organizations, the

city of Chicago under the leadership of Mayor Rahm Emanuel, and basketball teams locally and from

other cities. Chicago has been traditionally known for its outstanding basketball programs. This elite

showcase will highlight the extraordinary talents of our student athletes who are competing, but also give

us an opportunity to showcase our city and what it has to offer. Our guests will be able to visit Chicago

landmarks, dine at some of our most renowned restaurants, and shop on our Magnificent Mile.

As a former college cheerleader and a physical education instructor, I believe athletic experiences

positively impact students’ lives. They give meaning and purpose to educational institutions. The Chicago

Elite Classic coupled with these fantastic partners will provide a long lasting impression on everyone who

is affiliated and attends both or either session. Further, it will afford our visitors to Chicago an opportunity

to enjoy high school basketball in a family friendly atmosphere.

Please feel free to contact us at www.wyoung.org with any questions about our school and the wonderful

programs it offers.

Sincerely,

Joyce Dorsey Kenner, Ed.D.

10 CHICAGO ELITE CLASSIC

Greetings Friends:

On behalf of the Simeon Career Academy community, we are proud to welcome everyone that has

convened in the city this weekend for the Chicago Elite Classic. . The school’s motto is “Excellence is our

only option” and each member of our school community is encouraged to put those words into practice in

all of their endeavors. Consequently, our student athletes have been the recipients of countless accolades

throughout the city of Chicago and the State of Illinois. Simeon is also well known for its contribution

to Chicago’s rich basketball history. The head coach of the varsity Boys Basketball team, Robert Smith,

made history when he led the Wolverines to four consecutive state championship titles (2010, 2011 and

2012).

We are proud to cohost the Second Annual Elite Classic with Whitney Young Magnet High School

because it provides an opportunity for the two schools to forge a unique partnership to showcase the

talent of scholar athletes from all over the nation, as they compete against one another for the title of

Champion. We want to express our gratitude to all the participants, sponsors and individuals that have

given their time and energy to support the success of the Chicago Elite Classic.

Sincerely,

Simeon Career Academy Administration

EnvironmentLocated in a contemporary facility just north of the University of Illinois at Chicago, Whitney M. Young Magnet High School has a tradition of academic excellence and ethnic and cultural diversity. Whitney Young’s motto, “Where Academic Excellence is the Standard,” is embraced by students, teachers and administrators who work together as a community. “We are committed to the holistic development of the student --emotionally, physically, intellectually, morally and socially. We believe in providing our students with intellectually stimulating learning activities,” says Whitney Young’s principal, Dr. Joyce D. Kenner. Whitney Young boasts a diverse student body: 25.1 percent African American, 24.4 percent Latino, 16.7 percent Asian, and 29.3 percent Caucasian. In both the academic program and extracurricular activities, students of various backgrounds learn that their assorted talents can accomplish greater goals collectively.

AcademicsThe curriculum at Whitney Young emphasizes preparation in all core subject areas while allowing for the development of the whole student with a vibrant array of performing and fine arts programs. The school has three programs of study: The Magnet High School Program for grades nine through 12, The Academic Center for 7th- and 8th-graders, and the Specialized Services Program for the deaf and hard of hearing, CD (EMH and TMH). The instructional program in all areas stresses the development of critical thinking skills and the inclusion of multicultural curricula.

The school has 61 honors-level courses, a technology emphasis, peer tutoring programs in all subjects, and a nationally recognized Advanced Placement (AP) course program, with 27 AP courses offered. Students consistently place in the top five at national competitions, and are perennial winners at science and math fair competitions. The Class of 2012 included 19 Merit Semifinalists and 13 National Achievement Semifinalists. The Class of 2012 recorded the highest score ever for the school with a 26.6 average for 481 seniors. Our preliminary PSAE score looks to be the second highest in the state with a composite of 25.7. In 2013, three Whitney Young students earned perfect ACT scores of 36.

Leadership & InstructionAt Whitney Young, administrators, teachers and parents collaborate as a team to develop the highest standards of student excellence. “Our teachers understand and provide for the needs of our gifted and talented students and challenge themselves through continuing academic training and the pursuit of additional degrees in the subject areas,” says Dr. Kenner. Whitney Young’s instructors represent a broad spectrum of advanced degrees and years of experience. All teachers are encouraged to enhance their skills and participate in continued professional development activities.

AwardsWhitney M. Young Magnet High School’s Academic Decathlon placed 2nd in the nation. Whitney Young students have won the state Academic Decathlon for 26 out of 27 years and have consistently placed in the top five at ACADEC national competitions. In 2013, for the first time in 33 years, a CPS school, Whitney Young’s Math Team won the state championship. Whitney Young’s Chess Team has won the state championship twice in the last three years. Students also regularly win awards at annual citywide science fairs, as well as computer science, art and music, drafting, subject area and athletic competitions.

GraduatesA typical Whitney Young graduating class will have more than 95 percent of students admitted to four-year institutions. Students are selected to attend prestigious universities such as Harvard, Yale, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford, Duke, University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, Cal-Tech, Howard, Hampton and Grinnell. “The higher education community is well aware of our academic rigor, challenging curriculum, and focus on the development of the whole student,” says Dr. Kenner.

AthleticsWhitney Young’s philosophy of education is focused on the development of the whole person. To that end, the school provides numerous opportunities for students socially and athletically. Many of the Whitney Young sports teams compete in tournaments all over the United States. In the 2009/2010 season, both the boy’s and girl’s varsity basketball team took 2nd place in the Illinois High School Association 4A downstate championship and in 2008/2009 the boy’s varsity basketball team was the Illinois High School State Champions. For the 2012/2013 season, the girl’s varsity basketball team won third place in the state championship. The boy’s varsity basketball team won the coveted City CPS Championship and won its 4A regional title in state playoffs. These are just a glimpse of the unique opportunities offered to students.

CHICAGO ELITE CLASSIC 15

Simeon Career Academy is named after Neal Ferdinand Simeon, a man who was vitally concerned with

the social problems in the area of vocational education. Mr. Simeon’s interest in the vocational training of

Chicago’s youth was evident to all who observed his tireless devotion.

His years of educational training and development while at Illinois Institute of Technology and

Northwestern University helped him lay the foundation to improve vocational programs. His blueprint of

practices can be seen throughout the many current career programs in Chicago Public School.

Although the world suffered a great loss on August 28, 1963, when Mr. Simeon passed, his efforts and

practices continue to inspire and encourage. Simeon Career Academy is named after a great man,

leader, believer, and forward thinker. It is evident in the strides the school continues to make.

Simeon the home of the mighty Wolverines is where great minds are shaped and nurtured. The curriculum

is a true connection between college prep and careers. The heart and minds of students remain in the

forefront of all goals. All programs support the “whole” student.

Simeon offers programs that prepare students to meet the demands of the ever changing world. We are

known for our powerful academic and athletic programs. Throughout the city, Simeon is known for having

a nurturing and supportive learning environment. All hands are on deck to support students. Our job is to

push students to the next level.

“Excellence is the only option” guides our every word, action, and interaction. We work to ensure that

every Wolverine becomes who they were born to be. We teach students to believe in greatness. When

great teaching and endless learning takes place, students excel.

We hold ourselves accountable for who our students will become. For those who are uncertain about their

future, we are responsible for creating dreams and goals to guide them. Excellence is the only option!!!!!!

YANA UniversityBY JESSICA JACKSON

MORGAN PARK HIGH SCHOOL, JUNIOR

If I had the ability to make Chicago a safer place I would start an alternative school campus that emulates college life with on campus-housing, that particularly deals with troubled teens from all around Chicago. Their day would go from 8:45am to 4:00pm. For those that choose not to stay, roundtrip transportation will be provided. Their day will start with “Morning wake up” where teens can discuss any issues that have affected their day. Next they will go into their classes that are structured around their trade of career choice; each student will have a “CUSTOMIZED” schedule based on their individual needs and interests. If anything has occurred that has affected their day they will be encouraged and directed on how to move forward with options that will help them overcome whatever obstacles that they are faced with. The whole idea is to address the whole teen and every facet of their life.

This will be a “LIFE” changing program beyond mentoring; it’s mentoring kicked up about 1,000 notches. The goal is to provide safety security along with a healthy balanced diet. Three meals a day will be provided along with snacks. We want to educate our students in every life changing way. The end of the day will ALWAYS end with ways to build character and give them the “MENTAL” tools that they need to make the next day better than the current day. This program will be funded by donations, grants, community partnerships, outside partnerships, fundraisers, investors and community activists. To encourage the goal to finish this program will include a “JOB READY” program after completion of their four-year course. That will guarantee “Career Placement” after completion of the course.

To encourage healthy work habits students will have the option to work after the program day ends in order to earn a stipend that will allow them to take care of any family needs or personal needs. We want to service the “WHOLE” teen. The criteria for children to apply would be those whom have behavioral issues, consistently disruptive/ and fighting in school, those who have learning disabilities, and also those whom have criminal records. This school will help allow and offer troubled teens from all over Chicago a chance and opportunity to build towards something for their future A LIFE….A CAREER. We will try to instill in each student to be a very well rounded individual, to be able to utilize the teachings, morals, and life skills that they will have learned from being with us in their everyday lives to make wise decisions, for themselves. Our goal is to welcome these children with open arms and to give guidance and direction to help them attain their dreams. To provide them with a place where they can actually feel accepted, wanted, needed, and important so they can feel more encouraged to make a difference within their own, among their own. At YANA (You Are Never Alone) University (where excellence deserves a second chance), we believe in having a very responsible, disciplined, a loving, and family oriented staff such as ours. That’s why we have carefully selected each member of our staff members to be only the best to work amongst and to teach the minds of our young. Many of them which can relate to the nature of our students, to help guide them to doing and being better individuals for themselves. This 4-year institution for learning will require students, whether taking regular classes or AP honor classes, to receive a high school diploma and a degree. Our students will be enrolled in very rigorous academic courses to instill the importance in education within our students. Students who are taking regular courses will be working towards not only attaining their high school diploma, but also their associates degree and will be awarded at the end of their 4-year completion of the program or 3-year completion only if transferred, both a high school diploma as well as an associate’s degree.

Students whom are taking AP honor classes will also be working towards not only achieving their high school diploma, but as well as a master’s degree and will only be awarded at the end of their 4-year completion of the program or 3-year completion only if transferred, both a high school diploma and a master’s degree.

Here at YANA University we will advise a “RANDOM” drug test monthly and each student will be given three strikes, on Strike #1: Redirection, Strike #2: Counseling with student, and Strike #3: Expulsion. This is to instill discipline and responsibility amongst each student. Also, once every month the whole school will be required to participate in a community service project to not only gain service learning hours, but to build character, community awareness, and responsibility.

The whole objective at YANA University is to give troubled teens an alternative positive route to their life, showing them that they do have a choice, and to prepare them for the world and not to be afraid of it. To always come with the objective of wanting to learn and grow from the experience from others around them, their peers, but most importantly from their teacher, everyday. So, they will have the courage to one day stand up and say “If I had the ability to make Chicago a safer place I would.”

ChangeChiEssay & Scholarship Contest Winners

“Shoot Baskets Not Bullets”

Hundreds of teens from across the Chicagoland area voiced their opinions on how to make Chicago safer through the ChangeChi Essay Contest. Three students have been chosen to receive a scholarship.

1. What legacy do you hope to leave for your family and community?A legacy that I would like to leave is that, later in life, when I have a sufficient income, I

will provide my family with a better life. I would also put some of that money towards my

community by helping to renovate and clean up the South Side.

2. What are your future goals?I enjoy playing safety for the South Shore International football team, therefore one of

the goals I have in life is to become a professional NFL athlete. A second aspiration I have

in life is to become a meteorologist because I always had a passion for weather science.

Lastly, a goal I have is to start a charity that will fund research towards diabetes.

1. What legacy do you hope to leave for your family and community?Even though I plan on pursuing a career in the creative field, someday

I would also like to work as an activist to help those that are in

need in areas such as in Uganda and in Somalia. This is a long term goal of mine to

pursue. I want my legacy to show that I cared about people and demonstrated that

through my actions.

2. What are your future goals? My future goals are to become a screenwriter, director, an actress, and

someday an author. I want to be able to tell stories that genuinely move

people. A good example of a person who has been able to successfully

accomplish these things is Tyler Perry. He is one of the people that I admire because he has

managed to make a career by doing all the things that he loves while being very original

and creative in the process. I hope to be just as successful and inspiring as he is one day.

3rd Place Winner: Kierra LoweJESSE OWENS COMMUNITY ACADEMY, 8TH GRADE
