The 3rd

Annual Fr. Michael J. McGivney Golf Outing was held by the Knights of Columbus on June 20, 2016 at the Cary Country Club. The outing benefits the Michael J. McGivney Center for Hope and Healing.

While Council #11981 organizes the event, eighteen different councils, assemblies and the Chicago Chapter participate as sponsors.

It’s truly an Archdiocese event. A total of fifty five organizations, businesses and individuals donated to the cause. In addition, there were 88 players in this year’s event, which included lunch, golf, dinner and a raffle afterwards. The outing was able to produce this revenue with players only being charged $100.00 on the day making it one of the best deals ever for participating in a golf outing.

Fr. Terry Keehan, Pastor of Holy Family, of the winning team rips a drive.

Prizes were awarded for 1st through 4

th place, and long drive

and closest to the pin contests were held for men and our women guests.

Sue Cabey, Winner of the Women’s Closets to the pin.

We would sure like to see more women attend the event next year. Between these awards and the raffle, the total prize pool exceeded $4,000.

The first two outings raised a total of $20,000 for the McGivney Center making the event its largest fundraiser. This year, the outing raised the total to $34,000 as $14,000 was raised at this year’s event. WE hope to do even better next year. However, in order to do so, we need your support.

Next year’s event is already in planning. It is scheduled for June 19, 2017. We hope more of you will come out to play or join us for dinner. Also, please consider being a sponsor or a prize donor. It’s a great event for a great cause making it as always, a great day to be a Knight!

Nancy Gianni, founder of GiGi's Playhouse Down Syndrome Achievement Centers, named a 2016 CNN Hero!

CNN Heroes is a year-long initiative that honors everyday people for their selfless, creative efforts to help others. 2016 marks the tenth year of the Peabody Award-winning, Emmy-nominated campaign. Each year, CNN receives thousands of nominations from around the world. See Nancy’s segment and story at www.cnnheroes.com.

12 years ago, Nancy Gianni envisioned a better world, one full of potential and acceptance. That is when the first GiGi's Playhouse Down Syndrome Achievement Center opened.

Available to all, GiGi's is a place for families and the community to learn about and celebrate the diagnosis of Down syndrome and benefit from free therapeutic, educational and career training programs that unleash one's "Best of All". Today there are 31 free-standing Playhouses throughout the United States and Mexico serving more than 25,000 participants and families.

Programs are offered 100% free to all families so that cost will never be a barrier to achievement and acceptance. Going beyond Down syndrome, Nancy's vision for global acceptance for ALL comes to life through GiGi's Playhouse and the Generation G campaign. Acknowledgment on the world stage is a new and important milestone in recognizing the importance of life and the expectation of success that Nancy Gianni has set for families and the organization.

GiGi’s Playhouse is humbled to be a partner and beneficiary of the Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll drive in Illinois, and hopes for expanded engagement and partner opportunities with the Knights across the country.

From Nancy: "This is not about me or GiGi. It is about all of us stepping up to make this world a better place. The real Heroes of GiGi's Playhouse include the participants themselves, (they inspire me every day!), the volunteers who run 97% of all programming, the courageous families who embrace the journey of opening a Playhouse in their own community, and the believers who make this all possible." -----

GiGi’s Playhouse is the ONLY nationwide network of Down syndrome achievement centers; changing lives through free, results-driven programs and acceptance campaigns for individuals of all ages, their families and the communities where they live, work and play.

With an estimated 85-90% termination rate: much work remains to give babies with a Down syndrome diagnosis a fighting chance for life and happiness. 1 in 691 live births results in a Down syndrome diagnosis. With over 450,000 individuals with Down syndrome living in the US today; along with affected parents and siblings, over 2 million people face the diagnosis every day. Thus, supporting the lives of those WITH Down syndrome as well as those INFLUENCED by Down syndrome is a truly urgent need.

By helping individuals with Down syndrome through free programs and outreach, GiGi’s Playhouse advances a larger vision of global acceptance for people of all abilities.

WORLD DAY OF

PRAYER FOR PEACE

Each year, September 11, Marks the anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States. As the Knights of Columbus observe World Day of Prayer for Peace on that anniversary, we recall the tragic events of that day, and honor the thousands who lost their lives.

We also pray for peace among nations, especially in those places where war or turmoil persist. We pray that religion will be a means of peace and accord and not an excuse for violence and division.

At its annual meeting in 2004, the Supreme Council passed a resolution that September 11

th be

observed each year as a World Day of Prayer for Peace.

Councils, assemblies and circles are urged to organize events and activities on Sept. 11 promoting prayer for peace in the world, and recognize those individuals in your community who work to bring about true peace. It is also a time to encourage members and their families to take time out on this day for personal prayer and reflection.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR

PEACE - September 11th

God of peace, bring your peace to

our violent world: peace in the hearts of all men and women and peace among the nations of the earth. Turn to your way of love those whose hearts and minds are consumed with hatred.

God of understanding,

overwhelmed by the magnitude of this tragedy, we seek your light and guidance as we confront such terrible events. Grant that those whose lives were spared may live so that the lives lost … should not have been lost in vain. Comfort and console us, strengthen us in hope, and give us the wisdom and courage to work tirelessly for a world where true peace and love reign among nations and in the hearts of all.
