CSA's Annual Conference in Erie, Pa. is at the end of October. Reservations need to be made to hear these fine speakers, visit the Exhibit Hall and attend sessions to network and learn from new and experienced celiacs. There are programs planned for those 6 to 96 years of age and continuing education credits are available for some medical professionals. I hope to see you there! Tony Deany, CSA/GC Director and Publicity Chairman, and I are working together to bring awareness to this growing issue. A few things we have been learning in this process will be noted in this article, but bringing attention to the issue is step number one. How big the need and demand is for gluten free food items in Chicagoland food banks has not yet been well documented and those who rely on these services may not mention their dietary needs. On one occasion I had a food pantry guest inform me she has Celiac Disease. When I told her I have Celiac Disease as well, tears filled her eyes and she stated how thankful she was someone would be able to assist her. What I had noticed at this particular food care center is that gluten containing items are very prevalent in the packages they give out. In this woman’s package, I was able to read labels and replace gluten items with extra bags of rice, but, unfortunately, there were no gluten free cookies, crackers, breads or mixes were available for me to give her. There are several ways the food care centers gain access to the food they give out. Donations from local groceries, restaurants and the general public are the most prevalent ways. Gleaners, those who solicit various businesses to collect food items from them for the care centers, are a big part of how food is acquired. Local and federal grants are also used. One of the most important ways city/suburban food care centers access their food is from the Greater Chicago Food Depository. This agency supports over 600 food care centers by donating or selling food in bulk (in order to offer it at substantial savings). So, how can our organization help? 1. Bring attention/awareness to this situation. Everyone I spoke with was willing to learn and help address this issue. 2. Volunteer Showing up at a local food care center near you to volunteer is a great way to bring attention to this and ask guests who come in, if they have food allergy/intolerance issues. The Greater Chicago Food Depository is thrilled to assist us in making this work. As they determine how much of a demand there is for gluten free food, we will be working further with them to see how the food will be stored and distributed so that those who require gluten free food will get these items. Look for updates from us on how things are moving ahead. To find where food care centers are located in your area visit www.chicagosfoodbank.org for further assistance. --Bruce Zarlengo, CSA/GC Restaurant Review Chairman “True charity is the desire to be useful to others without thought of recompense.” - Emanuel Swedenborg

Great Gluten Free Resources from Bruce Zarlengo ! Chicago's own Kim Koeller and Robert La France announce the revised version of their best selling dining out

guidebook, Gluten Free Passport. I read this book and was amazed at all the insights they put together in dealing with food allergies/intolerances when dining out. This is also a great resource for those in the culinary profession. http://www.glutenfreepassport.com/

! The 2009-2010 issue of the Gluten Free Grocery Guide is now available. Go online to Cecelia’s Marketplace and receive 1 Free Gluten Free Dining Out card for ever purchase. ceceliasmarketplace.com/

! Go Picnic (www.gopicnic.com) features gluten free meals for those on the go. I was recently sent a notice from Living Without magazine about these products. The company’s gluten free line offers a number of pre-packaged gluten free specialty items from various retailers (including utensils). If you use the code CFCR at time of checkout, 20% of your purchase goes to the University of Maryland's Center for Celiac Research.

! Thank you to Steve Veach for advising us about Fresh Farm (myfreshfarms.com/index.html) located in Niles. They feature a large gluten free section and have other gluten free items noted on each aisle.

! Elisa Tech. Inc produces a new product called EZ Gluten that detects the presence of gluten in food. This could possibly be a great tool for dining out more safely. Visit the web page to learn more (ezgluten.com/) Could this really be as good as it sounds?

! As another great resource, check out Zeer (zeer.com/gluten-free-foods.html), an online resource featuring over 30,000 items with various gluten free ratings/status on each. Learn more about this service and how it may assist you.

Chicago Hosts Digestive Disease Week: An Overview I had the pleasure of volunteering to work the CSA Exhibitor Booth at "Digestive Disease Week - Turning Science into Medicine" located McCormick Place in May. This special event housed hundreds of exhibitors (ranging from pharmaceutical companies to medical equipment vendors) and hosted thousands of visitors from around the world. The majority of visitors were physicians hoping to gain further knowledge about how to better serve their patients. CSA had comprehensive handouts including membership forms, Celiac Disease Fact sheets, and materials that encouraged peer review research and physician education. Ironically, at an event such as this, there was no gluten free food to be found. How can an event such as this not consider the 1 in 133 people that suffer with gluten intolerance or other food-related allergies? After all, this was about digestive disorders and food plays a major role. Perhaps my next endeavor will be to write the AGA and alert them to what appears to be an obvious oversight. I encourage readers to consider participating or volunteering for similar events. Not only does it widen our horizons, it deepens our acceptance of this lifelong affliction.

Helpful Tool for Dining Out

Gluten Free Passport introduces a new feature to access options at fast food and on-the-go types of restaurants.

glutenfreepassport.com/apps/iCanEatOnTheGo.html

Future Expansion is Very Exciting

Daluciano's in River Grove is e x p a n d I n g! Added features will include gluten free cooking classes, freezer

display of take home items, extended hours and approximate seating for 85. www.Dalucianos.com

Restaurant Options for Northwestern and Western Suburbs

! Glen Prairie located in Glen Ellyn features a gluten free menu. Menu items range from chicken wings to bison

ribeye so there is sure to be something for everyone. Chef Danny Ovanin has great interest in creating safe and

great-tasting gluten free meals for us. www.glenprairie.com

! Pinstripes in Northbrook and South Barrington (reviewed before) is a fun and entertaining dning option. The

Executive Chef informed me about the specific procedures they take to ensure safe gluten free food. Basically,

they follow a process similar to dealing with a peanut allergy. Bowling anyone? www.pinstripes.com

! Retro Bistro in Rolling Meadows does an amazing job at preparing very tasty gluten free food (nothing plain).

They are very aware of food allergy/intolerance issues. Ask for Chris if you need further assistance.

www.retrobistro.com

! I was recently informed that Stay Fit Food Market in Mount Prospect carries a number of gluten free grocery items

and they feature Rose's Wheat Free items in their cafe (soup/bread). Contact them for further information.

http://stayfitfoodmarket.com/

! The Bank in Wheaton now features a gluten free menu. Several people informed me the food is delicious!

http://www.thebankwheaton.com/menus.html

! At a recent gluten free event I attended, one of the chef's at the Naperville location of Maggiano’s handed me

their Allergy Menu which addresses gluten/nut/dairy intolerance. In the future, they intend to host gluten free

cooking classes sometime this fall. Ask for Chef Jason when dining. http://www.maggianos.com/

! Longhorn Steakhouse is located in Norridge and the manager's sister has Celiac Disease, so he is aware. When

you click on the link below, take note of the gluten free menu download option at the bottom of the page.

http://www.longhornsteakhouse.com/nutrition/

! Risotto's Italian Ristorante in Gurnee features a gluten free menu. Someone may want to advise them that

advertising their new menu next to the words 'we now feature whole wheat pasta' does not sit well with gluten

free diners, BUT, I heard good things about their efforts. http://www.risottosgurnee.com/offers.php

! ZaZa's in Lake Barrington now features gluten free pasta (one made from rice, one from corn). They do charge

$2 extra for the pasta. Heard good reports about them. http://www.zazaslb.com/

*FEATURED RESTAURANT*

Hunan Beijing in Hoffman Estates is one of the most accommodating, great tasting Chinese restaurants. They take

care of you from their heart. Ask for Mr. Lee, Milan or Betty. They prepare each dish to meet any specific dietary

concerns. Enjoy!! http://www.hunanbeijing.com/

Pizza:

! Nick’s Pizza & Pub with locations in both Elgin and Crystal Lake now features gluten free pizza – with beer on

the way! Ask for managers Chris or Jenny for further questions (Elgin location). The crust is shipped in (not

made on the premises) then placed in a separate foil pan for prep and cooking to avoid any cross

contaminiation issues.

http://www.nickspizzapub.com/site/home/

! Pizza Fusion in Naperville features gluten free pizza. Ask for Jaime (Asst. General Manager) for further

assistance.

http://www.pizzafusion.com/

Ballpark News:

I recently read an article from Triumph Dining that stated the best arena for gluten free beer and food is Coors Field

in Denver. They have an entire concession stand featuring-hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, brownies, cookies, beer, chips and pretzels – all gluten free! I’m a fair-weather fan -----so GO ROCKIES!

Courtesy of our Dining Out Chairman, Bruce! A brand new gluten free menu is being featured at Barrington Gourmet in Barrington (barringtongourmet.com).

Rick and Colin Rudolph are the owners/chefs of this restaurant where all entrees are made-from-scratch family

recipes. The new gluten free menu features pizza, baby back ribs, pulled pork platter, tuna salad, etc. There is

gluten free beer. The owners noted they spent a great deal of time developing the gluten free pizza and tested

it with customers who are do not need to eat gluten free to see if it passes the test, and it did!! Finish your meal

with their homemade gluten free brownie. They also offer catering services. Stop in and let them know how much

you appreciate all their efforts.

Biaggi’s is located in Deer Park, Algonquin and Naperville www.biaggis.com and now features gluten free pizza. It

is not listed yet on their menu but they are working to get the word out. So far, I have heard good reviews about

their new gluten free pizza.

In Highland Park try City Park Grill (thecityparkgrill.com). Click on menu and view their gluten free menu

options. They have been offering gluten free foods for years.

Good news for us, this list could go on and on! -- Happy Dining!

Expo Experience The 2nd Annual Gluten Free Cooking Expo was held in Lisle, August 15-16, 2009. This is an interview with Expo founder, Jen Cafferty. Where did the idea of doing the expo come from? My entire family is gluten-free (even my dog!) In the Chicago area, a few years ago, there was no place to learn how to cook gluten-free food. Before I had children, I was a fundraiser and event planner for Hospice. I applied my event planning skills and created a place where people could come and learn how to safely cook delicious gluten-free food. What do you hope attendants will take away from the event? My goal for each Expo attendee is that they will embrace their gluten-free journey and realize that gluten-free foods can be delicious, nutritious and fulfilling. Most people leave the Expo feeling that their gluten-free lifestyle is one that can be celebrated and not detested. My ultimate goal is to help all Expo attendees enjoy their gluten-free life and understand how to get their nutritional needs met on this diet. How do you choose your presenters and topics?

I try and strive for a balanced program each day. Each day includes a registered dietician, numerous gluten-free chefs and someone from the medical field that understands celiac disease and gluten intolerance. This year, I tried to focus on healthier foods and not so many baked goods. Also, we really made an effort to teach how to prepare the amazing naturally gluten-free grains, such as quinoa, amaranth and teff. We focused on nutrient-dense gluten-free foods and held a session on how to live a gluten-free lifestyle on a budget. The energy you’ve invested is so obvious in every aspect of the expo, what is (or are) the most challenging things for you? First let me say that I love what I do or I wouldn’t be doing it. I live and breathe gluten-free life and I’m reminded by the Expo attendees how strongly my commitment comes through. The most frustrating thing for me is that some people think I should not charge an admission fee for the Expo. Like any business, especially a gluten-free one, there are tremendous costs associated with the business. I am always saddened when people think that gluten-free businesses are charging too much money. Yes, the products cost more than traditional products, but most of our small businesses have greater costs than a traditional business and are not making money. We need the support from the community to keep going or you will not have any gluten-free products available to you. We need to support each other on our gluten-free journeys and I hope you will support all of your favorite small gluten-free companies, just as they are trying to support you. Gluten-free and happy to be here - Lori Barr, South Side Support Group Chairman
