Chiaroscuro Tutorial

Find a chiaroscuro picture, make sure it is not to high contrast so that you

can still see the form

Open illustrator and paste the pic in

Lock the pic layer and add new layer

In new layer add a black colored box

Toggle off the box layer and add new layer

Using your pen tool begin adding white shapes over the brightest

highlights

Continue adding white shapes over the brightest areas

Lock the white shape layer and add new layer

Choose pen tool again and change the fill to non and stroke to white. Change the shape of the stroke and the weight

Draw a line following the contour of one of the shapes, do not try to do the

full length of the face

Draw a second line a little bit away and follow the contour of the face. Make sure the space

between is the same tone!

Use your blend tool and select both lines to create another steps of lines

inbetween

Double click on the blend tool to change the options

Continue using contour lines to create the mid tones. You can over lap lines..

This is called cross hatching

Continue adding lines and white shapes to build up the form.
