Indian Ocean Tsunami 2004 The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami is considered the most devastating tsunami on record. Is believed than more than 150,000 people may have lost their lives, many of them washed out to sea. This tsunami is estimated to have released the energy of 23,000 Hiroshima-type atomic bombs, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The tsunami traveled as much as 3,000 miles (nearly 5,000 kilometers) to Africa, arriving with sufficient force to kill people and destroy property.

What happens in a tsunami is the enormous force and weight of so much water sweeps away almost everything in its path. A third of the people who died in the Indian Ocean tsunami were children, many others didnt have enough strength to resist the force of the water. Many people were crushes by debris or killed when the sea hurled them against struc tures. In several places the tsunami announced itself with a rapid recede of the ocean.Source NOAA

Survivors reported were surprised because of how far was the ocean withdraw, exposing seafloor never seen before, stranding fish and boats on the sand. Tragically many people ran out onto the exposed seafloor to take pictures of the scene. Survivors, who knew what the receding ocean meant and that there was an extremely high possibility of a tsunami, tried to warn people and ran for high grounds. Experts say that the receding ocean may give people as much as five minutes warning to escape. That may have given enough time for many people who died in the tsunami to escape and save themselves, if only they knew what it meant. The Indian Ocean tsunami caused waves as high as 50 feet (15 meters) in some places, according to news reports. But in many other places survivors described a rapid surging of the ocean, more like an extremely powerful river or a flood. Witnesses said the approaching tsunami sounded like three freight trains or the roar of a jet. People who were together when the tsunami struck were separated in the torrent. Some survived; others succumbed or disappeared. A baby was found floating safely on a mattress.

A tsunami is a series of waves called wave train, and the first wave may not be the most dangerous. The waves of the tsunami wave train can be five minutes to an hour apart. Some people did not know this on December 26. Once the first wave had gone, they thought it was safe to go down to the beach. Witnesses of the Indian Ocean tsunami reported that the sea surged out as fast and as powerf ully as it came ashore. Many of the people that didn't perish by the water rushing inland, were swept out to sea when the ocean retreated.

TSUNAMITsunami Defined - The word Tsunami is a Japanese word meaning harbor wave which describes a massive or series of waves. Vertical movement of the earths crust generates these giant walls of water often referred to as a wave train or tsunami. Many events as such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, or even meteorite impact may cause a Tsunami. Swells - A Tsunami has gigantic swells, often many kilometers deep and can move the entire depth of the ocean; they may cause damage thousands of kilometers away from their original source. These massive surges of water travel at tremendous speeds ranging from as much as five hundred to one thousand kilometers per hour and can travel across the Pacific Ocean in less than one hour. Waves - The span of time between waves is known as the wave period and in most cases there are only minutes between surges, but in many instances more than an hour has passed between them. Due to their unpredictable nature many lives have been lost when people have returned home

too early only to be hit by another wave and have their homes and lives washed away forever. Warning - Many areas at risk for a Tsunami rely on emergency warning systems put in place to detect and warn the residents of impending disaster. An interesting phenomenon has been observed while watching the local animals in these disaster prone areas; they seem too instinctively sense imminent danger and flee to higher ground. Many scientist believe that animals may be able to sense tremors in the earth long before humans can and are therefore able to retreat before tragedy strikes. History - The biggest tsunami in recent history occurred off the coast of Sumatra and was caused by an underwater earthquake. Two smaller earthquakes that occurred days before the killer wave on December 26th, 2004 preceded this monster wave. The Richter scale recorded this last quake to have a magnitude of 9.2 and pinpointed it to occurring off the West Coast of Northern Sumatra. The official death toll is not known but is estimated somewhere between 200 000 and 300 000 people. The devastation that was left and the clean up that followed was unprecedented when compared to any natural

disaster that has occurred in recent history. For news updates on this topic visit Tsunami News BBC They appear to be one of the few credible sites that offer frequent updates including survivors stories, analysis, aid effort, and photos.

What kind of monster is this? It speeds across the sea as fast as a jetairplane. On reaching land, it can suck all the water out of a harbor. Then the creature may grow more than 100 feet tall (30 1/2 meters) and flatten whole villages.

This sea monster is a tsunami (tsoo-NAH-mee). Thats Japanese for greatharbor wave. Though sometimes called tidal waves, tsunamis have nothing to do with tides. Usually an undersea earthquake starts a tsunamis waves rolling across the ocean. If youve ever tossed a pebble into a pond, then watched ripples spread out over the surface, youve seen this principle at work.

About four out of five tsunamis happen within the Ring of Fire, a zone offrequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions roughly matching the borders of the Pacific Ocean. Along the rings edges, giant slabs of the earths crust, called tectonic plates, grind together. Sometimes the plates get stuck, and pressure builds. Then, the plates can suddenly come apart and slam into a new position. The jolt causes an earthquake. If an earthquake lifts or drops part of the ocean floor, the water above it starts moving too. This triggers a tsunami.

A tsunami can race across the ocean at 500 miles (805 kilometers) an hour.Oddly, in deep water its waves are only a few feet high. But when the waves approach shore, they increase in energy and height. Often before a tsunami hits, there is a giant vacuum effect, and water is sucked from harbors and beaches. People see the bare sea bottom littered with flopping fish and stranded boats. That is because waves are made up of crests, or high points,

and troughs, or dips between crests. When a trough hits land first, the water level drops drastically. Usually another wave blasts ashore about 15 minutes later, then another and anotherfor two hours or more.

Tsunamis have killed more than 50,000 people in the past century. To savelives, scientists established the Pacific Tsunami Warning System, based in Hawaii, in the U.S.A. Its network of earthquake detectors and tide gauges detects quakes that may cause a tsunami.

We cant tame the tsunami. But we can learn when its coming and escapethe sea monsters fury.Text by Jerry Dunn

fast as a jet airplane and may grow more than 100 feet tall and flatten whole villages. Tsunamis are water waves generated by the disturbance associated with seis activity, explosive volcanism, a submarine landslide, a meteorite impact with ocean, or in some cases meteorological phenomena. A tsunami represents a v volume of seawater in motion, the source of its destructive power. These wav be generated in oceans, bays, lakes or reservoirs. Tsunami is a japanese word means harbor wave. Represented by two characters, the top character, tsu means harbor, while the bottom character ami means wave, because such often develop as resonant phenomena in harbors after offshore earthquakes. A tsunami can race across the ocean at 500 miles an hour. Often before a tsu hits, there is a giant vacuum effect, and water is sucked from harbors and bea When the first wave hits land, the water level drops drastically. Usually anoth wave blasts ashore about 15 minutes later, then another and another, for two or more. Tsunamis have killed more than 50,000 people and are responsible for severa hundred million dollars in property damage in the past century. This awesome monster cannot be diminished but we can learn when it's coming and escape sea monster's fury.

n Ocean Tsunami 2004

004 Indian Ocean earthquake was an undersea earthquake that occurred on December 26, 2004. Th uake had a 9.0 magnitude with an epicenter under the Indian Ocean near the coast of the Indonesi of Sumatra, according to the USGS, which monitor earthquakes worldwide. This was the largest uake since the 9.2 magnitude Great Alaska earthquake in 1964. The earthquake generated a tsuna perhaps the most destructive tsunami in history. The earthquake was the result of the movement o portion of the boundary between the Burma Plate (The Burma Plate is a small tectonic plate located east Asia, often considered a part of the larger Eurasian Plate) and the Indo-Australi an Plate, causin 04 Indian Ocean earthquake.

know the violent movement of the sections of the tectonic plates, displaced an enormous amount o sending powerful shock waves in every direction. Over 1200 km of the boundary underwent thrust g and shifted an average of 15 m, with the sea floor being uplifted several meters. This rise in the s enerated a massive tsunami that killed over a hundred and fifty thousand people along the coast o Ocean.

ore information see Earthquake generated tsunami The word tsunami has now become familiar to even a kid in a short span of time with its gravity. But, what is tsunami? What does it mean and how is it caused by

earthquakes? A tsunami is a wave train, or series of waves, generated in a body of water by an impulsive disturbance that vertically displaces the water column. Earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions, explosions, and even the impact of cosmic bodies, such as meteorites, can generate tsunamis. Tsunami is a Japanese word, which means, "harbor wave." "Tsu," means harbor, while the "nami," means, "wave." Tsunamis can be generated when the sea floor abruptly deforms and vertically displaces the overlying water. Tectonic earthquakes are a particular kind of earthquake that are associated with the earth's crustal deformation; when these earthquakes occur beneath the sea, the water above the deformed area is displaced from its equilibrium position. Waves are formed as the displaced water mass, which acts under the influence of gravity, attempts to regain its equilibrium. When large areas of the sea floor elevate or subside, a tsunami can be created. As a tsunami leaves the deep water of the Open Ocean and travels into the shallower water near the coast, it transforms. A tsunami travels at a speed that is related to the water depth - hence, as the water depth decreases, the tsunami slows. The tsunami's energy flux, which is dependent on both its wave speed and wave height, remains nearly constant. Consequently, as the tsunami's speed diminishes as it travels into shallower water, its height grows. Because of this shoaling effect, a tsunami, imperceptible at sea, may grow to be several meters or more in height near the coast. When it finally reaches the coast, a tsunami may appear as a rapidly rising or falling tide, a series of breaking waves, or even a bore.Set as homepageFeedback

Tsunami hits AsiaTsunami among world's worst catastrophes

Friday, 31 December , 2004, 08:40

Hong Kong: Asia's tsunami nightmare ranks among the world's worst catastrophes, alongside the Tangshan earthquake in China and the massive floods that swamped Bangladesh 35 years ago. While more than 120,000 have been killed by the walls of water sent surging towards Indian Ocean coastlines by a massive undersea earthquake off Indonesia on Sunday, it is still a far cry from the numbers who perished on that fateful day in China.

Killer wave hits Asia Full Coverage Express your sorrow India counts the cost Survive a tsunami Images: A shocked Chennai Contribute to the Sify-Red Cross fund

At 3.48 am on July 28, 1976, the earth opened and swallowed Tangshan city in the country's Hebei province.

When the dust settled more than 242,000 were officially dead, although Western experts estimated the number at 700,000. Like the tsunami that crashed into Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and seven other nations, there was no prior warning. More than one million people were peacefully sleeping and had no time to escape. The entire earthquake lasted just 14 to 16 seconds, felling 93 percent of all residential buildings. While the casualties from the tsunami are not on the same scale, the number of countries affected distinguishes it as a one-of-a-kind disaster, not seen for hundreds of years. Over the past century, Asia has borne the brunt of the world's natural disasters, accounting for most of the terrifying natural acts that the elements periodically unleash. The calamitous Tangshan earthquake came just six years after nature came calling on Bangladesh, where a cyclone and tidal wave took the lives of up to 300,000 people. The 20th century had its fair share of big-ticket disasters, starting in 1908 when the Sicilian city of Messina and Reggio di Calabria and Palmi in mainland Italy were slammed by an earthquake and tidal wave. Between 70,000 and 100,000 people died. China was the focus of the world's next big tragedy, when it was left reeling by an earthquake in Ningxia province that claimed an estimated 200,000 lives. Three years later Japan was in the spotlight, when an earthquake destroyed much of Yokohama, setting off major fires and leaving 143,000 dead. Over the next 12 years, China, the world's most populous country which repeatedly features in lists of the worst natural disasters, had to deal with two other momentous catastrophes. In May 1927 up to 200,000 people perished when an earthquake hit Nanshan city in the south. Within five years the country was again in the eye of Mother Nature, with an earthquake in northwest Gansu province killing 70,000. China has suffered more than any other country over the years. Floods kill thousands annually, with the 1931 flooding of the Yangtze River causing an estimated three million deaths. Still in Asia, Bangladesh was next in line with a cyclone slamming into the country's south in October 1942, leaving 61,000 dead or missing. In May 1970, it was South America's turn to witness how precarious Earth is when a quake triggered landslides which killed 66,000 people in northern Peru. Before the devastation wrought by Sunday's tsunami, the most recent big disaster had been in April 1991 when floods in Bangladesh claimed more than 139,000 lives. On average, floods cause more deaths around the world each year than any other natural act, experts say. In terms of tsunamis, the world has seen relatively few with the wave that hit north west Papua New Guinea in 1998 providing the most recent example. Some 2,000 were killed. Prior to that you have to go back to 1883 to find a tsunami causing deaths in their thousands. Then, the eruption of Krakatoa volcano on an uninhabited island between Sumatra and Java in Indonesia triggered a wave that killed 36,000 people.

Tsunami hits AsiaSri Lanka sees silver lining in tsunami tragedy

Friday, 31 December , 2004, 11:15

Colombo : Deadly tsunamis have unexpectedly shored up Sri Lanka's peace process, where the government has been under pressure to open talks with Tiger rebels or risk war. Nearly 25,000 people were killed in Sri Lanka after a wall of water slammed into coastal areas Sunday. The death toll is expected to soar to 29,000 in the next few days as thousands of missing are declared dead. With rescue workers struggling to get aid to thousands stranded or left destitute by the tsunami, calls have been raised for the foes to unite in the aftermath of the Killer wave hits Asia disaster, despite three decades of war that have left 60,000 dead. Full Coverage Express your sorrow "The silver lining in this tragedy is that we may not go back to India counts the cost Survive a tsunami war anytime soon," said retired airforce chief Harry Gunatillake. "The common grief also gives an opportunity for Images: A shocked Chennai Contribute to the Sify-Red Cross fund mending fences." Gunatillake, who had earlier predicted that the Tigers could take to the battlefield by mid-January, has now revised his forecast for war. "The tsunami may have averted a bigger tragedy," Gunatillake said. "If not for it, we would be back at war in the New Year and that would have been a bigger catastrophe." President Chandrika Kumaratunga, who lost an eye in a Tiger suicide assassination bid in 1999, said Thursday that the threat of war was "remoter" after the tsunamis because of losses suffered by the rebels. She said the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) have suffered especially devastating losses to their naval units. However, military analysts said neither side appeared in the mood to return to war, despite peace broker Norway's warning that hostilities could erupt again as it desperately tried to bring both sides back to the negotiating table after a 20-month impasse. "The losses are such the government is also not in a position to go back to war for some time," said retired Sri Lankan army brigadier Vipul Boteju. "Fighting is out of question for both." Kumaratunga admitted that the military lost heavy weaponry as well as a large number of vehicles when the tsunami washed away several bases along the eastern seaboard. Government forces have also admitted having 61 soldiers killed and over 250 wounded, though the Tigers have not spoken of their losses. Both sides, however, have made peace overtures in the wake of the aftermath of the tsunamis. Kumaratunga told reporters here that the shared grief could clear the way for a rapprochement, but stopped short of making any direct peace moves. However, she said she shook hands with two Tiger women cadres who were helping tsunami victims at a relief centre in the island's east Thursday. Asked if the chance meeting could lead to a warming of relations between the two sides which have been observing a tenuous ceasefire since February 2002, the president said it was not a calculated move. "You don't stop to calculate what the results are, but I acted naturally and spontaneously. I asked them about the relief operations, what they cooked and things like that." However small Kumaratunga's gesture, Tiger political-wing chief S.P. Thamilselvan told AFP it could be a signal of better things to come. "If the intentions are translated into action, definitely it could be a positive step towards building confidence," he said. "It will definitely have a positive impact on the peace process as a whole." Foreign aid donors and international lenders who had virtually suspended aid to Sri Lanka are now digging deep into their pockets to help the island rebuild, and unlike in the past, no peace strings are attached. Earlier, donors who pledged 4.5 billion dollars in aid to rebuild war damaged areas had insisted on progress in talks to release money. Economists say there is a good chance now of that cash too being released.
