Chestermere Regional Transit Feasibility Study

The Calgary Regional Partnership is a collaborative network of 11 municipalities in the Calgary Region that work together to ensure growth occurs in a sustainable manner.

The Calgary Regional Partnership

We are the only voluntary regional organization of municipalities in Canada, and collectively we represent more than 1.2 million people.

The Partnership is preparing the Region for the more than 1.8 million people expected to arrive over the next 60 years.

Chestermere Regional Transit Feasibility Study

The Calgary Regional Partnership is focused on delivering a complete regional transportation and mobility system to make regional growthmore sustainable.

Regional Transportation

This will be achieved by:

Providing transit expertise to help implement local/regional transit service within CRP municipalities.

Developing a regional fare strategy to attract riders and focus on convenient travel within the Calgary Region.

Promoting region-wide transit culture through the development of a regional transit brand and marketing strategy.

Developing a regional transit governance model to oversee the efficient delivery of a region-wide transportation system.

Achieving economies of scale by working from a regional perspective rather than on an municipal basis.

REGIONAL TRANSIT GOVERNANCEThe Calgary Regional Partnership is currently developing a business model (including operation and funding) that would allow the Partnership to own and operate regional transit assets, with the intent of finding the most economical, cost-efficient and effective way to implement regional transit. This means the cost of delivering regional transit would be shared by most of the member municipalities.

Planning for Growth

Affordable and reliable transportation is a key factorin accommodating growth and improving quality of life for citizens.

GROWTH IN CHESTERMERE

In the last ten years, Chestermere’s population has increased by over 300% making it the fastest-growing community within the Calgary Region. Over 30% of Chestermere’s population is age 19 and under and approximately 52% of Chestermere’s population is age 35 and under.* The Waterbridge development is expected to add 46,000 people over the next 30 years.

GROWTH IN THE REGION

In 2012, the population in the Calgary Region was 1.4 million people. Our region is expected to grow by an additional 1.6 million people and 700,000 jobs by the year 2076.

Chestermere Regional Transit Feasibility Study

The Calgary Regional Partnership is working with the Town of Chestermere to complete a Transit Feasibility Study for the Chestermere area.

Study Purpose and Goals

The purpose of the study is to determine if a future public transit system would be successful by investigating who would use it, where it would go and what the service might look like.

Specifically, the study goals are to:

Review the need for local and regional transit service for the Chestermere area, based on recent studies, Town policy and public input;

Research transit vehicles (taxis, buses, etc.), operational models (dial-a-ride, fixed route), and management options that may be appropriate for a ‘starter’ transit service in the Chestermere area;

Determine conditions, financial and otherwise, to feasibly initiate local and/or regional service for the Chestermere area;

Identify environmental and other benefits of implementing a transit service.

If transit is deemed feasible,

Develop an implementation plan, including cost and revenue estimates and marketing requirements.

What We Heard

In March 2014, the Calgary Regional Partnership asked Chestermere residents about their regional travel patterns and needs through an online survey. More than 450 surveys were completed, with the majority of respondents supporting regional transit. The survey was advertised on road signs and delivered to approximately 6,000 homes in their March utility bill.
