Referral
• Made by a parent, teacher, counselor or anyone who works with the child
• Followed up through a Child Study Committee meeting
• within ten days of the referral
• Parents are invited and should participate
Child Study Meeting
The committee meets within 10 business days after referral is made The committee includes: the person who made the referral principal or designee at least one teacher and specialist
Evaluation
Requires parental permission Usually will happen during the school day
Eligibility Meeting
• Parents must be invited • Committee determines eligibility, not
placement
• Makes recommendations to IEP committee

Course (USE)
A 4 hour course designed for parents to assist in the understanding of the special
education process and development of the advocacy skills needed to work as partners
with their child’s school.
