ChessandSocietyWelcome to the thirdLondonChessConference! The conference has evolvedsignificantly since it launched in2013. Initially itwasaboutresearchonschoolchessandtheexchangeofbest practices. In 2014, under thetheme Chess and Mathematics, weexplored mathematical games andpuzzles as well as any games thatcouldbeplayedwiththechessboardand pieces, and we learned thattheseareavaluableadditionifchessis being taught for educationalmotives. This year our theme is Chess andSociety. While chess in education isstill our focus, we are givingrecognition to a growingmovementusing chess for social goals. Socialentrepreneurs are pioneering chessin new contexts. Social projects arebecoming more significant whenconventional approaches lackresults.Onlyafewchessfederationshave embraced this developmentyet, but many will follow as sportssubsidies are decreasing and otherfunding sources are becomingavailable. It could well be that thesocial chess entrepeneurs of todaywill lead the chess federations oftomorrow.

Even more than in the first twoeditions, we are emphasising theneed for co-operation. This is whywe have reduced the plenaryelement and have extra workshops.Round tables and panels give allparticipantstheopportunitytoshowand share their expertise and toidentify common projects. Theprogramme also features sevendebates in the lively "World CaféFormat". A record number ofattendees,fullhouseat140,isasignthatweareontherighttrack.The programme includes hands-onworkshops on topics like chesscamps, lobbying and businessmodels for school chess. It breaksgroundontheroleoffamiliesaswellaschessandaddiction.Itreflectsoncurrent affairs with workshops onchess for refugees and for theprevention of dementia. And itextendsonthepriorconferencewithworkshops on chess andmathematics and on the didacticchallenges of education oriented"scholasticchess".Weareveryexcitedaboutthesetwodays, andwe hope that you get themostoutthem!JohnFoleyStefanLöffler
