Lessons Learned and the Way Ahead

I am honored to begin my serviceas the 2015 President of ourChesapeake INCOSE Chapter andam no stranger to the nature ofthe challenge. I have just attainedthe 4th year of service along theway to completing two non-consecutive presidential terms. While I am quite prepared todescribe the many virtues of theorganization that we proudlyserve, I thought it more

beneficial to focus briefly on the overall scope of our recentactivities, what we have learned and what paths of opportunitylay ahead for us.

The Board of Directors (BOD) has worked hard over the past yearto attract record attendances to our functions and embrace newinitiatives. This was accomplished while honoring ourcommitment to follow INCOSE INTERNATIONALs best practices

and promote Systems Engineering thinking to the local learnedcommunities including other engineering societies, colleges andpre-college youths. Equally important was the improvement of afinancial and governance foundation that could support ourdesire to increase the scope and size of our programs andactivities.

We revamped our activity templates, did mini-analysis ofexpenditure patterns and conducted a formal audit of theChapters financial records. None of this could have been donewithout the dedicated assistance of our Associate Directors.

These individuals, serving at the invitation of the BOD, attendedmeetings and performed myriad invaluable services. Taken as awhole, their service has changed the landscape of our chapterand made possible a sense of optimism that many of us carryinto the New Year. I think the BODs recognition that they mustattract and retain Associate Directors should be the first on ourlist of lessons learned in 2014.

At the end of the year, the President Elect prepares the CircleAwards Submission Sheet to document the Chapters concreteachievements as measured against INCOSE INTERNATIONALcriteria. During January 2015, an INCOSE committee will evaluateand rank all the INCOSE Chapters and determine who will receiveawards for outstanding performance.
