Reusche’s decision to leave Cherry Hill for Haverford was strictly a personal one. “I have strong personal connec- tions to the Haverford Township School District in Pennsylvania,” she said. “My husband and I both grew up there.” Reusche said she wasn’t look- ing to leave the Cherry Hill Public Schools when the consultant doing the superintendent search for Haverford contacted her, but the opportunity to return to her childhood home was an opportu- nity Reusche couldn’t pass up. However, to return to the school district she attended as a child, she would have to leave the dis- trict she called home for the past eight years. “I think people are surprised,” Reusche said of the response from the Cherry Hill community. “But when they hear about the personal connection, the re- sponse is that it makes sense.” The Cherry Hill Board of Edu- cation announced in a statement following Reusche’s resignation it would begin the process of hiring a new superintendent immediate- ly. A pair of proposed projectscould transform Cherry HillWest’s tennis courts into a first-class facility and give area pickle-ball enthusiasts a new place toplay. Cherry Hill Township Council

approved a series of applicationsfor Camden County Open Space

grants during last week’s meet-ing. One grant would be used tohelp fund improvements to theLocustwood Park tennis facility, the home court for Cherry HillWest’s tennis teams. The otherwould help fund the installationof a pickleball court at Lions DenPark. The improvements to the Lo-

custwood Park tennis courtswould benefit both township resi-dents and the school district.Township director of communi-cations Bridget Palmer said thetownship is planning to put infour newly paved tennis courts atthe site. According to the propos-al, the school district would in-stall a fifth court. New fencingwould also be installed at the fa-cility. The proposed project would re-

solve safety concerns residentshave brought to the school dis-trict and the township in the past.In addition, the project would ex-pand the space at the facility, making it compliant with UnitedStates Tennis Association regula-tions. “It will allow the high school to

host tournaments there,” Palmer

said. Another proposed project will

help placate pickleball fans. Thetownship has applied for a $25,000grant to install a pickleball courtat Lions Den Park located on NewYork Avenue. It would be the firstpublic, outdoor pickleball courtin the township. Palmer said there has been a

growing interest in pickleball inCherry Hill, especially amongsenior residents. Pickleball is ahybrid racquet sport played on abadminton style court. The rulesof pickleball are a combination oftennis and ping pong. The pickleball courts will be in-

stalled on an old, underutilizedbasketball court.“We’ve received some com-

plaints that the basketball courtwas in disarray,” Palmer said. The township plans to install

three pickleball courts on the oldbasketball court site later thisyear. Two other open space grants

would help Cherry Hill Americanand National Little Leagues. Thetownship applied for $25,000

For one day every April, fa-mous landmarks such as the Em-pire State Building and NiagaraFalls light up blue for autismawareness. While the building at Cherry

Hill High School East won’t be litup, the school community plansto do its part to make blue thecolor of choice on April 2. For the fifth consecutive year,

Cherry Hill East will be deckedout in blue to promote autismawareness in the school’s ownLight It Up Blue for AutismAwareness campaign. Dana Tete, a special education

teacher at Cherry Hill East, brought autism awareness to theforefront of the school communi-

ty in 2011.“I have a nephew who is sick,

so it's something that’s reallyclose to my heart,” Tete said. Each April during Autism

Awareness Month, Tete and otherstudent volunteers would hangposters in the hallways and try toraise awareness as best as possi-ble within their community.“We were just kind of making

announcements,” she said. “Weposted flyers throughout thebuilding. We posted on the mar-quee on the front of the buildingto let the community know.”This year, the school is taking a

bigger step toward actively help-ing those with autism. The schoolhas partnered with the SouthernNew Jersey chapter of AutismSpeaks and plans to collect dona-tions for the organization.

The idea to donate to AutismSpeaks began when the schoolcelebrated Spirit Week last No-vember. “We donate to different chari-

ties during Spirit Week, and thisyear we sold puzzle piece t-shirts,” Tete said. “We raisedabout $1,000 there to donate to dif-ferent organizations.”Cherry Hill East is expected to

be full of blue t-shirts on April 2.Tete and students from the peertutoring homeroom have been ac-tively promoting Light It Up Blue, reminding students and teachersto wear their shirts to school onApril 2.Tete is the advisor for peer tu-

toring and credits those studentsfor helping her promote thefundraiser.“There are students who want

to help in any way they can,” shesaid. “They're the people that aregoing to be selling the donationcards.”The donation cards, which the

peer tutoring students will handout, will be the main source offundraising for the school com-munity. Any money raised will goto the Southern New JerseyChapter of Autism Speaks.Tete believes the entire school

community will step up and do-nate, even if it’s just a few dollarsper person. “We asked everyone to take the

challenge,” Tete said. “We’veadded a little bit and we're hopingthat it's a success.”While many buildings will only

light up blue for one night onApril 2, Cherry Hill East’s Light ItUp Blue fundraiser is takingplace for the entire month ofApril. For more information onLight It Up Blue at Cherry HillEast, contact Tete [email protected] members can also

donate to the Southern New Jer-sey Chapter of Autism Speaks. For more information, call seniorcoordinator Emily Kreifels at(856) 858-5400 or email [email protected].

k, so the survey in question –“the Best and Worst States toRetire,” compiled by

Bankrate.com – didn’t exactly findthat you’d be out of your mind to re-tire in New Jersey, but it did rank theGarden State near the bottom of thelist of desirable places to spend the lat-ter portion of your life. This should not be a shock. The survey ranks New Jersey 45th

on the list of best places to retire, based on the fact that the cost of livingis high (45th), the community wellbeing is low (43rd) and the tax rate isvery high (49th). These factors out-

weight the low crime rate (eighth) andthe above-average weather and health-care quality. There’s a reason why so many New

Jerseyans retire elsewhere – it’scheaper. And cheaper is better, be-cause most people would rather seetheir hard-earned money go towardvacations than taxes, for example.

Many retirees go to Florida not just forthe weather but for the absence of astate income tax.Maybe if New Jersey was more af-

fordable, more elderly residents wouldstay at home, near their friends andfamily. But since it’s not, many don’t.We are probably not the only ones

who laughed when we pondered wherein New Jersey – other than, say, abeach town such as Ocean City –would be a “good” place to retire. Andthat’s a shame, and a problem all at thesame time. Our residents shouldn’t have to pre-

pare to leave when they retire.

in our opinion

Road maintenance begins for 2015

With winter winding down,Cherry Hill Township has restart-ed its road maintenance program.Palmer said the township will

be finishing projects left overfrom 2014 first before beginningprojects slated for 2015. This year, the township has in-

vested $2.6 million into its roadmaintenance program. This is ontop of any grant money the town-ship receives. The largest of these jobs will be

the second phase of the Old Or-chard Road reconstruction. Laterthis year, crews will continue thecomplete reconstruction of theroad from Highgate Lane toEvans Lane. The Old Orchard re-construction project is a multi-year effort. The township has re-ceived help from the state Depart-ment of Transportation in theform of grant money. The moneyhas been used to help offset thecost of the first two phases of theproject. Earlier this year, thetownship applied for grant moneyagain for phase three.

“Cherry Hill is a wonderfulplace to work,” she said. “I havebeen very happy here working inthe district.”Reusche’s favorite thing about

the school district is meeting peo-ple who keep the district running, from her fellow administratorsworking out of the Malberg build-ing to the many teachers and stu-dents who frequent the 17 schools. The one thing Reusche is most

proud of is the line of communi-cation she opened with the teach-ers. She enjoyed visiting theschools and listening to teacherfeedback on a variety of educa-tional issues.“I am particularly proud of the

relationship that I’ve establishedwith the teachers,” she said. “Iwould like to think they describeme as a familiar face that they seein their buildings.”Reusche also enjoyed meeting

students throughout the district. With Cherry Hill Public Schoolscomprised of more than 11,000students, it was impossible tomeet each student. However,Reusche made an effort to get toknow as many students as possi-ble. She recalls students she metwhen she first came to CherryHill in 2007 and how she’s

watched them move through ele-mentary, middle and high school. “In a district this size, there are

students that I’ve been able towatch progress through the sys-tem,” she said. “While there aremany children I do not have theopportunity to interact with, ithas been delightful when thoseoccurrences have taken place forme.”One of the ways Reusche has

been able to connect with individ-ual students has been throughtown halls at Cherry Hill Eastand Cherry Hill West this year.Reusche credited the board of ed-ucation student representativesfor playing a huge role in bridg-ing the gap between administra-tors and students.Reusche also expressed her

love of the district’s diversity. Each school has its own characterand culture. While the curricu-lum may be the same for eachgrade level, Reusche said she en-joyed the unique ways someschools presented the curricu-lum.“It’s one of the things that

makes it interesting to workhere,” she said. While Reusche is excited to be

able to return home to Haverfordin July, she is also saddened toleave Cherry Hill.“This has been a phenomenal

experience,” she said. “It’s been agreat ride here.”
