How to become a business analyst

There is no defined way to become a BA. Generally companies hire a person with

strong analytical skills and technical background with or without an MBA degree. A BA

has to often overlap into the roles of project manager and consultant. The

International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) through its CBAP (Certified Business

Analysis Professional) program provides a certification program for business analysts,

as well as a body of knowledge (Business Analysis Body of Knowledge, BABOK) for the

field. The certification is recognised and the expertise gained through it is valued by

companies all over the world.

A certified business analyst becomes an expert in handling business needs of an

organisation and determining best solutions. The program includes hands-on work

experience in business analysis through the CBAP application process and passing the

IIBA CBAPexamination.

The eligibility criteria for Certification emphasise on work experience rather than

educational degree. The CBAP exam is designed in such a way that requires many

years of relevant work experience and not taking advanced education into account.

The minimum work experience is that of five years in the business analysis during the

last ten years engaged in tasks specifically related to the knowledge areas as defined

within the BABOK.

The preparation of cracking IIBAs CBAP certification exam needs to be very

strategically done as the examination is designed to check candidates knowledge

gained during his BA work experience and not educational or bookish qualification.

Page 3: Chennai Ba Training

There are many institutes that prepare candidates for CBAP examination. These

preparatory programs are very helpful in cracking and gaining the

IIBAs CBAPcertification.

So get a certification to grab a dream job at one of the most sought after companies

and be ahead of your peers in professional competence.

Who are eligible for BA?

• Any fresher with MBA is eligible

• There is no need of technical knowledge for BA profession.

• Any person with Good Communication skills and domain knowledge can enter in to

BA profession

• All Sales / Marketing / Domain Subject experts / Developers/ Testers …etc can also

be Business Analysts.

• There is lot of inconsistency in the role and profession across industry, here with

few of the roles :

o A lot of C-level executives (CEO, CFO, etc.) do come from a business analysis

background these days.

o Account Manager

o Application/ Information Architects

o Business Analysts

o Business Architect

o Business Consultant

o Business Process Analyst

o Data Analyst

o Delivery manager

o Domain Experts/Subject matter experts

o Entry-level IT Business Analysts

o Information Systems Analysts

o Practice Manager

o Project manager

Page 4: Chennai Ba Training

o Requirements Analyst/Specifier

o Self-taught IT Business Analysts wanting to fill in the gaps and put all the pieces

together

o Solutions architect

o Sr. Developers / Testers / QA

o Subject matter expert

o Systems Analysts/Designers and programmers interested in expanding their role into

the business area

o Vice president

What is BA?

• A business analyst is an Information Analyst that comes with a "communication

connector". In IT you would typically find top analysts but then without the

connector.

• Try to get an understanding of the aim of the project and look at the deliveries. Get

an understanding of the time lines of the project.

• Business Analysts must balance their soft skills, such as communication, with their

technical capabilities related to IT infrastructure and data analysis if they want to

best serve their organizations.

Why do we need BA?

• Many companies are grown from People oriented to Process oriented companies.

Some companies even became local to global by mergers and acquisitions, inheriting

or adopting international quality standards or best practices. So as a BA you should be

capable of understanding the business of client in this rapidly growing organizations

and the complexity in the deployment to the target end users. So always BA should

think in terms of client or end user perspective based on his business knowledge or

domain expertise and identifies business problems in the starting phases of project

itself and creates a customer delight.

Page 5: Chennai Ba Training

• There is lot management awareness to be created across corporate about the

importance of BA profession. Many companies think another task of PM is a BA role.

When is the right time to get in to BA?

• Have some Professional certification related to Business analysis and enter to job

market to identify yourself in the crowd of job market.

• Any person irrespective of degree with sufficient domain knowledge can crack BA

interviews

Where are jobs for BA?

• Jobs are there in IT and Non IT companies and in all domains and for Subject matter

experts

• As a BA it requires 70% communication skills and 30% domain knowledge, so every

small or big company requires BA irrespective of domain or technology.

• Any person working as worker can get in to management side of corporates by this

BA profession.

How to get in to it?

Basically for any job your resume is a Index of your skills. I have seen lot of people

writing resumes for BA profession, the most common thing I recommend is

• Your resume should read well, be clear and concise, and have even formatting and

fonts.

• If your resume doesn’t have the keywords related to the job you are applying for,

you will be out even before the game starts.

• Use variations of relevant keywords, such as business analysis, business analyst,

systems analyst, requirements, UML, business objectives, business goals, and so on.

• Brush up on your continuing education and certifications. There are lot of

certifications in BA

• Most business analyst positions require strong communication skills, good

researching abilities, excellent interpersonal relations, meticulous attention to detail,

organization, diplomacy, and so on.

Mr.Krishna.P , CCBA (BA , IBM , Bangalore) - " Vijay had varying levels of experience and as a result of this training walked out with a better understanding of how we can use these methods to work with diverse teams to gather input and feedback on requirements that they need to meet a global need. I could not speak highly enough for the course. It provides a context for change both at a personal and organisational level and then goes on to provide practical techniques for successfully implementing change. In particular, I really enjoyed the case studies and the sharing of experience with other participants. I would recommend the course to both mature students like myself looking for a new impetus and to younger students looking to develop their career as a business analyst or team leader. For anyone with management

ambitions, the course would be really advantageous." Mr.Dinesh (BA,Bank of America,Hyd) - " I work as a Business Analyst and found

I would recommend this program to any Business Analyst aspiring to learn current business practices and techniques, and affirm existing skills. The lectures and organisation are first rate."

Mr.Kiran(Senior BA ,USA)"I liked the instructor's background which, I believe, made him perfect to teach an online course. The subject matter is dry; but, the instructor made material easy to understand. He used great examples which made the theoretical "stuff" relevant. I would like to see him teach a more advanced course.

Mr.Anil (Junior BA ,Hyd)"I think this course overall was excellent. Vijay explained the course material in everyday language and not the academic jargon we are used to. I found the supplemental information very good. In all honesty, there is nothing bad to say. If my professors were like this one when I was an undergraduate, I would have done much better than I did."

Mr. Suneet ,CBAP (Senior BPM , Accenture, Bangalore) -"This course provided an

excellent introduction to business analysis techniques. It is obvious the

Page 18: Chennai Ba Training

instructor has a great deal of experience in the field. He was able to make some very complex concepts much easier to understand."

Mr.Chandra Pulaparti, CCBA (Junior BA, Bangalore) The Spectramind courses are a very effective way of developing an understanding of Business Analysis and Requirements Management and form an important part of our BA training framework.
