Introductory Information

• You are going to be testing a number of different antacids to see which one really does the best job of neutralizing acid.

• Most of us have had some type of indigestion at some time or another, upon going to the store we are bombarded with a number of different choices of antacid.

• Which one really works the best? Let’s find out! • In the lab today, we are going to be using Coke as our acid.

• You and your group will be responsible for testing one of a

number of different antacids and reporting your findings to the class.

Pre Lab Class Discussion Questions

Please record your answers to these questions on your lab report packet.

1. Which antacid will work the best and why?

2. Which antacid will work the least and why?

Procedure

• pour coke into a Dixie cup filling it half way (about 1.5 ounces)

• Using the giving indicators, test the pH of the Coke. • Record your findings in the table below:• At this time Select one of the antacids(only one try

per group) if you are testing a solid, you need to grind it up to a fine powder by crushing it with a hard object

• Once your sample is ready, pour it carefully into the Coke.

Page 6: Chemistry Antacid Lab

Procedure Continued

• Stir the mixture for at least 30 seconds to make sure that the antacid is dissolved; if it is not dissolved after 30 seconds continue stirring until all the antacid is dissolved.

• Take the pH of the Coke + antacid and record your findings in the table below:

• Repeat for all of the antacids recording your results in the table below

• Answer the analysis questions at the end of this lab.• Turn in your completed lab.

Analysis Questions1. Which antacid(s) would neutralize stomach acid most effectively?

2. Which antacid(s) would be least effective in neutralizing stomach acid?

3. Was your hypothesis correct in predicting the most effective antacid?

4. How effective do you believe is measuring pH with Litmus paper? Why?
