Course Description:“In Chemistry, students conduct field and laboratory investigations, use scientific

methods during investigations, and make informed decisions using critical thinking and scientific problem solving. Students study a variety of topics that include: characteristics

of matter; energy transformations during physical and chemical changes; atomic

structure; periodic table of elements; behavior of gases; bonding; nuclear fusion and nuclear

fission; oxidation-reduction reactions; chemical equations; solutes; properties of solutions; acids and bases; and chemical reactions.

Students will investigate how chemistry is an integral part of our daily lives.”- TEA

Objectives:•The student will be prepared to take a college level chemistry course.•The student will be required to:

• Apply chemistry to everyday life;• Use habits of mind in thinking and

learning;• Develop an awareness of careers in

chemistry fields;• Apply critical thinking skills• Demonstrate mastery of basic

chemistry skills and concepts.

Grading:Daily: 50%

• Includes class work, independent practice and labs. Independent practice provides preparation, practice and reflection over concepts learned in class. Expect it!

• Quizzes count as 2 daily grades and may consist of multiple choice, matching, problem-solving, essay or free response questions.

Tests: 50%• Chapter/Unit tests may consist of matching, multiple choice, problem-solving,

essay or free response question. Semester and final exams will assess new concepts that semester and cumulative basic skills. Performance assessments may also be given. At least 4 tests will be given per 9 weeks.

Retesting Procedures:• The time and date for test corrections or retests will be determined by the teacher, but will not be later than five days after the original test.• A student will receive a maximum score of 70 if he/she earns a 70 or above on test correction or retest.• Correction or retests will not be allowed on quizzes or semester exams.

Absences:The student will receive one day for each day of an excused absence to turn in work missed due to the absence.When the student has prior notice of test or quiz scheduled to be given on the day the student returns from an absence, the student will be expected to take the test or quiz as long as no new material has been gone over in class during the student’s absences.

Cheating/Plagiarism• Students who cheat and/or assist in cheating on a test or assignment will receive a grade of zero and a discipline referral.• Students are not to copy any portion of another student’s homework or lab(other than data obtained by the lab group.) This is CHEATING! Collaboration does not mean copying. Each graded assignment must reflect individual effort by the student.
