CoCl(PPh 3 ) 3 proves to be a novel mediator for the conversion of benzylic bromides (I) to aromatic aldehydes (II) (6 examples) in the presence of aerial oxygen. In the absence of oxygen, the functionalized benzylic dimers (III) are produced. Both the oxidation and the C–C coupling reaction are compatible with several functional groups. Possible mechanisms are discussed. — (GOSWAMI, S.; MAHAPATRA, A. K.; Tetrahedron Lett. 39 (1998) 14, 1981-1984; Dep. Chem., Deemed Univ., Howrah 711 103, India; EN) 1
