Symmetrical biliverdins (I) are smoothly converted into formyltripyrrinones (II). The best yields are obtained by carrying out the reaction in the presence of sodium bicarbonate and by using 60 equivalents of silver(I) nitrate. When the asymmetric biliverdin (III) is used as an educt, formyltripyrrinones (IV) and (V) are obtained in good yields. The mechanism of this conversion is similar to that proposed for oxidation of biliverdins with thallium nitrate. — (WANG, PENG; ZHANG, YI; CHEN, QINGQI; MA, JIN SHI; Org. Prep. Proced.
