The chart on pages 1–3 will help you select the properglove for handling the hazardous chemicals listed. Choosethe most apppropriate glove by comparing the degrada-tion, breakthrough time and permeation rate. This chart isa collection of data provided to us by the individual glovemanufacturers. Remember that these tests were conductedon specific gloves under laboratory conditions. We recom-mend that you conduct your own tests to determine theappropriate glove for your application.Degradation (D) is a reduction in physical properties ofthe glove material. Common effects include swelling, wrin-kling, stiffness, change in color or other deterioration. Thedegradation ratings indicate how well a glove will hold upwhen working with a specific chemical. Degradation testsvary by manufacturer—there’s no standardized test that’sused by everyone in the industry. However, the glovematerial is usually exposed to the test chemical and thepercent weight change is then determined at four timeintervals: 5, 30, 60 and 240 min. In our chart, we reportresults for the 30 min. test.

Degradation resistance is essential to worker safety butshould not be the sole determining factor. The chemical’sbreakthrough time and permeation rate are the two otherimportant factors that must be considered.Breakthrought Time (BT) is the elapsed time between ini-tial contact of the chemical on the glove material and theanalytical detection if the chemical passes through theglove material. This test is conducted per ASTM F739standard test method for Resistance of Protective ClothingMaterials to Permeation by Hazardous Liquid Chemicals.The higher the result, the longer it takes for the chemicalto pass through the glove material. Permeation Rate (PR) is a measurement which describesthe rate of chemical passing through the glove material

after chemical breakthrough has occurred. Manufacturersreport permeation rate in different ways. Some report inmicrograms of chemical per square centimeter of glovematerial per minute. The higher the result, the morechemical passing through the glove material. Other manu-facturers rate the permeation similar to that done fordegradation—Excellent (E), Good (G), Fair (F), Poor (P)and Not Recommended (NR). If chemical breakthoughdoes not occur, then permeation is not measured. This isreported as ND (none detected) or NT (not tested),depending upon the manufacturer. This test is also con-ducted per ASTM F739.
