Review Paper
AbstractThe review of literature reveals that a complete checklist on the butterfly fauna of Bhutan has never been published. A few studies have been conducted on butterflies of Bhutan, however, a comprehensive list on butterfly fauna is currently not available. The present study aims to provide precise data on the known butterfly fauna of Bhutan. This document presents a checklist based on the review of available literature on the butterflies of Bhutan. It comprises 670 species; Papilionidae (55 species), Pieridae (51 species), Lycaenidae (160 species), Nymphalidae (265 species), and Hesperiidae (139 species). Of these, 182
species (Papilionidae (16 species), Pieridae (10 species), Lycaenidae (38 species), Nymphalidae (93 species) and Hesperiidae (25 species) are listed as rare or very rare in Indian literature, which does not mean they are rare in Bhutan. 120 species are protected under different schedules of Indian Wildlife Protection Act, 2002. None of the butterfly species reported from Bhutan are included in the protected schedules of Forest and Nature Conservation Rules, 2006 of Bhutan except Bhutanitis ludlowi Gabriel, 1942 (Ludlow’s Bhutan Glory).

Inventory research activities of butterfly fauna through participation of specialists, amateur lepidopterists and relevant authorities in all parts of Bhutan is necessary and advisable.
Key words: Checklist, butterfly, Bhutan.
IntroductionThis is the preliminary attempt to come up with an annotated checklist of the butterflies’ fauna of Bhutan. The checklist is clearly incomplete but attempts to provide baseline information and to generate research interest in this diverse yet poorly known group of species.
Studies of the butterfly fauna of Bhutan could be found in Bingham (1905), Evans (1927, 1932), Talbot (1939, 1947), Wynter-Blyth (1957), Yazaki & Kanmuri (1985) and Harada (1987a, 1987b). There have been series of butterfly studies in Bhutan since the early 1900s. More recently, a few booklets and checklists on butterflies have been published; Van der Poel & Wangchuk (2007), Singh (2012), Wangdi et al. (2012, 2013),Wangdi & Sherub (2012a, 2012b, 2014), Harada et al. (2012), Dorji & Motoki (2013), BWS (2013), Dorji (2014), Singh & Chib (2014), Singh (2014), Nidup et al. (2014) and Nidup (2015).Collectively these works gives an overview of the rich butterfly fauna of Bhutan. However, a comprehensive list of butterflies is not available for Bhutan.
In the past years the majority of butterfly studies were conducted in the western part of Bhutan includes Chukha, Paro, Haa, Thimphu, Punakha and Gasa districts. Yazaki & Kanmuri (1985) have studied thoroughly in western Bhutan which reported 265 species of butterflies. Later Harada (1987) also reports 152 species of butterflies from western Bhutan where Yazaki & Kanmuri (1985) have previously studied. Van der Poel & Wangchuk (2007) supported by Conservation Internationals Rapid Assessment Program
(RAP), USA and Royal Society for Protection of Nature (RSPN), Bhutan produced a butterfly booklet which was the first of its kind which provides a brief idea on the rich diversity of butterfly in Bhutan. The booklet was based on the butterflies encountered by Van der Poel who was working in Bumdeling Wildlife Sanctuary (BWS). He mainly documented butterflies from Trasiyangtse, eastern part of Bhutan. The booklet contains 136 species of butterflies found in hills, mountains, and mid altitude valleys between 800 to 3000 m of eastern Bhutan. In August 2009, Karma Wangdi, forester, took pictures and collected a specimen of Bhutanitis ludlowi in the BWS, located in Bhutan’s remote Kholong Chu Valley. This specimen provided the first clear evidence in 75 years that the species was still present after it was first discovered by two English botanical collectors, Frank Ludlow and George Sherriff. In August 2011, some mating pairs of B. ludlowi were sighted and captured at BWS in Bhutan by the team of researchers of the Butterfly Society of Japan (BSJ), Wildlife Conservation Division (WCD), Ugyen Wangchuk Institute for Conservation of Environment (UWICE) and BWS (Bhutan Government official release, 2011; Kuenzang, 2011; Harada et al., 2012). During the survey, the team also made opportunistic observations on other butterfly species and reported 130 species from Trasiyangtse valley. Three species, Naga Giant Hopper (Apostictopterus fuliginosus), Cerulean Hairstreak (Neozephyrus suroia) and Euthalia amplifascia were the first records from Bhutan (Wangdi, et al. 2012, 2013).
Arun Pratap Singh (2012) also studied butterflies of Bhutan in the lowland forest of Sunkosh river for 18 days in between January 2009 to March 2010. The study was the part of the biodiversity impact assessment for the proposed Sunkosh hydroelectric power project, and the survey
24
was carried out along the Sunkosh River to study the butterfly diversity, identify species of conservation priority and to know the butterfly diversity of the area. He reported 213 species of butterflies of which 11 species were listed in Schedules I and II of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, of which 10 species are of conservation priority as they were ‘RARE’ in occurrence across their distribution range in the region (Singh, 2012). These species are Pale Wanderer (Pareronia avatar), Large four-Lineblue (Nacaduba pactolus continentalis), Barred Lineblue (Prosotas aluta coelestis), Jezebel Palmfly (Elymnias vasudeva vasudeva), White-edged Bushbrown (Mycalesis mestra retus), Great Evening Brown (Melanitis zitenius zitenius), Yellow Rajah (Charaxes marmax), Blackvein Sergeant (Athyma ranga ranga), Pale Hockeystick Sailer (Neptis manasa manasa) and Creamy Sailer (Neptis soma soma).
In 2012, UWICE, Bumthang under the supervision of Karma Wangdi and Sherub published three field guides on Papilionidae, Nymphalidae and Hesperiidae with financial support from Bhutan Foundation and Bhutan Trust Fund for Environmental Conservation (BTFEC). These three field guide books contain 42 species of Papilionidae, 164 species of Nymphalidae and 93 species of Hesperiidae.
Dorji & Motoki (2013) also reported the presence of the Restricted Purple Emperor (Mimathyma bhavana) in Bhutan from sub-tropical evergreen forest of Chukha district. The species was reported from the Tala Hydroelectricity Project area. In the same area the authors also encountered some rare species of butterflies; Bhutan Sergeant (Athyma jina) and Panther(Neurosigma siva).
In 2009, workers at BWS conducted surveys on butterfly fauna at the vicinity and inside of sanctuary. The BWS management plan (Van der Poel & Dukpa, 2013) reported the presence
of 200 species of butterflies. Which includes Papilionidae (22sp.), Pieridae (21 sp.), Lycaenidae (49 sp.), Nymphalidae (89 sp.) and Hesperiidae (22 sp.). The presence of Ludlow’s Bhutan Glory (Bhutanitis ludlowi) which is protected as National Butterfly of Bhutan and listed in IUCN’s Red list as Vulnerable is an important species of conservation importance in BWS.
In 2011, Department of Science, Mendrelgangang Central School (MCS), Tsirang have initiated documentation of butterfly fauna in Tsirang district as part of the conservation education programs for the school students. Singh & Chib (2014) reported 125 species of butterflies from Tsirang. The most significant results were the sightings of Sordid Emperor (Chitoria sordida), Blackvein Sergeant (Athyma ranga ranga), Creamy Sailer (Neptis soma soma), Blue Duke (Euthalia durga durga) and Chocolate Albatross (Appias lyncida) which were protected under different schedules of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 (amended in 2002). Singh (2014) further reported 116 species of butterflies of Dzamling Norzoed Community Forest, Tsirang adding 28 species at the known butterfly checklist of Tsirang with the sighting of few important globally rare species like, Great Darkie (Allotinus drumila drumila), Yellow Dryad (Aemona amathusia amathusia), Straightwing Blue (Orthomiella pontis pontis) and Great Swift (Pelopidas assamensis).
Dorji (2014) reported 80 species of butterflies from Phobjikha valley and along the highway between Phobjikha and Wangduephodrang as part of the conservation and sustainable livelihoods program taken up by RSPN.
Nidup et al. (2014) also conducted butterfly survey in Manas range of Royal Manas National Park (RMNP) and reported 91 species among which Coon (Sancus fuligo) was a new record for Bhutan. In continuation, he further reported 181
25
species of butterfly from RMNP which includes a few species of conservation importance.
The above mentioned surveys give a brief idea on the rich diversity of butterflies in Bhutan. But, a complete checklist on butterflies of Bhutan has never been produced. There has been no attempt in preparing a standard up-to-date checklist of butterflies of Bhutan. Thus, our aim is to fill this gap of knowledge by preparing a checklist of the butterflies of Bhutan.
Materials and methodsThe checklist was prepared based on review of literature available for butterflies of Bhutan. The major literature referred to during the preparation of the checklist were Bingham (1905), Evans (1932), Talbot (1939, 1947), Gabrial (1942), Wynter-Blyth (1957), Yazaki & Kanmuri (1985), Harada (1987a, 1987b), Van der Poel & Wangchuk (2007), Wangdi, et al. (2012, 2013), Wangdi & Sherub (2012a, 2012b, 2014), Singh (2012), Dorji & Motoki (2013), Dorji (2014), Singh & Chib (2014), Singh (2014), Nidup et al. (2014), Nidup (2015), Smetacek (2015), Haribal (1992), Smith (1994, 2006), Kehimkar (2008), Kunte, et al. (2014) and Gasse (2014), The butterfly checklists available with Jigme Singye Wangchuk National Park (JSWNP), Bumdeling Wildlife Sanctuary (BWS, 2013) and Trasiyangtse (Piet vander Poel Pers.
Comm.) were also referred for additional source of information during the compilation. The present checklist follows the common names prescribed by Evans (1932), Talbot (1939, 1947) and Kehimkar (2008) due to unavailability of the common names of butterflies in Bhutanese literature. The status on the rarity of the butterflies in the checklist is purely based on Indian context (Evans, 1932; Talbot, 1939, 1947; Wynter-Blyth, 1957; Kehimkar, 2008).
ResultsCareful analysis and verification of the available literature on butterflies of Bhutan, the presence and absence of butterflies confirmed occurrence of 670 species of butterflies. These butterflies are represented in 5 families viz. Papilionidae (55 species), Pieridae (51 species), Lycaenidae (160 species), Nymphalidae (265 species), and Hesperiidae (139 species). Papilionidae (16 species), Pieridae (10 species), Lycaenidae (38 species), Nymphalidae (93 species) and Hesperiidae (25 species) were listed as rare and very rare in India (Table 1) (Evans, 1932; Talbot, 1939, 1947; Wynter-Blyth, 1957; Kehimkar, 2008). It includes Ludlow’s Bhutan Glory (Bhutanitis ludlowi) listed as a vulnerable species in IUCN’s Red data book (Table 1) (Collins & Morris, 1985).The checklist of butterfly species that are confirmed to occur in Bhutan is given in Appendix I.

DiscussionSignificant evidences on the presence of potentially rare and threatened species of butterflies were obtained during the review of available literature on Bhutanese butterflies. Papilionidae (16 species), Pieridae (10 species), Lycaenidae (38 species), Nymphalidae (93 species) and Hesperiidae (25 species) were listed as rare and very rare in India (Table 1) (Evans, 1932; Talbot, 1939, 1947; Wynter-Blyth, 1957; Kehimkar, 2008).Of which, Papilionidae (11 sp.); Pieridae (6 sp.); Lycaenidae (29 sp.); Nymphalidae (81 sp.); and Hesperiidae (2 sp.) (Appendix I: †=Schedule I, IWPA 2002; ¥=Schedule II, IWPA 2002; ‡=Schedule IV, IWPA 2002) are protected in India under various Schedules of Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 (Amended in 2002) but the status of these species is not evaluated so far in Bhutan. The Ludlow’s Bhutan Glory (Bhutanitis ludlowi) is listed as vulnerable species and Kaiser-I-Hind (Teinopalpus imperialis) as Near Threatened species at IUCN’s Red List (IUCN, 2015). Bhutan Glory (Bhutanitis lidderdalli), Brown Gorgon (Meandrusa lachinus), Hannyngton’s Apollo (Parnassius hunnyngtoni), Banded Apollo (P. delphius), De Niceville’s Windmill (Byasa polla) and Chinese Windmill (B.plutonius) are listed as rare and uncommon species need to be evaluated at IUCN’s Swallowtails conservation action plan (New & Collins, 1991). Ludlow’s Bhutan Glory (B. ludlowi) is protected under the schedules of Forest Nature and Conservation Rules of Bhutan 2006 and is declared as National Butterfly of Bhutan. This species was believed to be endemic to the Trasiyangtse Valley, Trasiyangtse, eastern Bhutan, until September 2012 (Harada et al. 2012). The sighting near Dirang and Sange village in Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary, West Kameng District (Arunachal Pradesh, NE India) at an altitude of 2,600 m A.S. L. represents the first record outside Bhutan. The species is now known to be endemic to eastern Bhutan and the West Kameng area (Dutta, et al., 2015).
Rediscovery of rare and endangered Ludlow’s Bhutan Glory (B. ludlowi) (Bhutan Government official release, 2011; Kuenzang, 2011; Harada et al. 2012), Bhutan Tree brown (Lethe margaritae) (MoAF, 2012) from eastern Bhutan, confirmation on the presence of new species Restricted Purple Emperor (Mimathyma bhavana) from Chukha district (Dorji & Motoki, 2013) and Coon (Suncus fuligo) from RMNP (Nidup et al. 2014) indicates that we have, for a long time not paid any attention to this taxon. Very little scientific research is done on these species despite having a rich diversity of about 800-900 species (van der Poel & Wangchuk, 2007). Therefore, there is a need to undertake research activities and conduct a systematic survey of the butterfly fauna in all parts of Bhutan.
Thus, the present checklist will represents a step forward for butterfly research in Bhutan. Policy makers, relevant government or non government organizations and national and international funding agencies should focus on research activities and develop a conservation approach for this valuable natural treasure of Bhutan. This annotated checklist should hopefully be useful for future research into the butterflies of Bhutan, which are very still poorly known.
ConclusionThe result of this review paper indicates the presence of rich butterfly diversity in Bhutan. Thus there is a need to focus on studies of this little known group of insects in Bhutan. Very little work on butterflies has been conducted in Bhutan. This may be due to lack of knowledge on the topic or lack of focus on their importance in ecosystem management in Bhutan. It should be mentioned that the occurrence and protection status of butterflies in India, may only have limited validity for Bhutan. Some species recorded as rare or protected in India, such as the Pea Blue and Common Beak, are common in Bhutan. Timely evaluation to determine
27
which butterfly species of Bhutan are rare and/or endangered species and development of butterfly conservation strategies will help to conserve this rich diversity. So, let’s join hands and help to conserve this opulent asset of our country.
