Director’s Notes

My love affair with Agatha Christie began in high school. I’m constantly scouring second-hand bookstores for well worn copies bearing that well known name. Obviously, I am not alone in my admiration; she is the world’s best-selling mystery writer, after all. Much of the attraction of Ms. Christie’s writing is that it is not only clever, it is very human. Her characters are wonderfully flawed: they are sometimes foolish, jealous, or cruel, but even the villains are never solely defined by these traits. They are complex, and as such, they are relatable. Maybe it’s this quality that has lead to the success of “The Mousetrap”, the longest running play in theatre. Since its initial performance in 1952, it has continuously run. The play’s run is almost four times longer than the average age of those performing it tonight. Not too shabby, Ms. Christie…

Speaking of those performers, we have several new faces on stage for this production. I’m always surprised-more often than not, pleasantly-at the number of students who audition. This year saw a huge influx of new talent, from both the freshmen class, and students who have not previously auditioned. I’m continually amazed by the diversity of each cast I’ve directed, and by how quickly they come together. This year, our cast is a blend of new and experienced actors, athletes and scholars, but all are dramatists in their own ways. Between all the television quotes, whistling lessons, and set painting, it’s been a pleasure to see the cast not only bond, but help each other grow. The veterans helped out the less experienced, and the newer members brought different perspectives to the show. They have worked very hard, and I am proud of all the time and dedication they have given, not only to me, but to each other. The crews, as always, have been exceptionally patient and helpful. They always do a beautiful job, and I am supremely grateful for them. Although there are no major scene changes (one of the benefits of single-set plays), I do have a student stage manager, who has been extremely helpful, standing in for actors at rehearsals, gathering props, and generally keeping me from going crazy.

Traditionally, audiences are asked not to reveal the ending of “The Mousetrap” to those who have not seen it. In this age, where spoilers are an increasingly common occurrence, I would ask you to maintain this tradition. I can’t imagine that no one will ever have the ending revealed to them before seeing the show, but it’s a charming idea, befitting a cozy, snow-drenched murder-mystery. So come in, warm yourself by the fire, and enjoy the show.
