Department of Chemical Engineering College of Engineering, University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City ChE 122: Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics I Course Description: Application of 1 st and 2 nd Laws of Thermodynamics to closed and open systems, flow and non-flow systems; Volumetric and other thermodynamic properties of ideal gas and real fluids; Calculation of thermodynamic property values and changes; Thermodynamic analysis of power generation and refrigeration systems Credit: 3 units (3 hr/wk lec) Prerequisite: Math 55, Chem 28, ChE 101 Section: THU Course Objectives: At the end of the course, the student should be able to 1. Derive and solve energy balance equations for closed and open systems 2. Calculate volumetric properties for ideal gases and real fluids 3. Understand the derivations of thermodynamic property relations and use the resulting equations in calculating property values and changes 4. Make thermodynamic analyses of power generation and refrigeration systems Course Requirements: 4 Long Exams (LE’s) 80% Quizzes, Problem Sets 15% Attendance, Homework 5% Grading Scale: >90.00 86-90 83-85 80-82 77-79 74-76 71-73 68-70 65-67 <65.00 1.00 1.25 1.50 1.75 2.00 2.25 2.50 2.75 3.00 5.00 Rules and Guidelines: 1. LE’s may be closed- or open-book exams. Necessary tables and figures shall be agreed upon prior to the examination date. 2. Grievances regarding checked LE’s shall be entertained only within three (3) days upon the return of papers or announcement of scores. All grievances (for any reason) will not affect the grades if they are raised after the 3-day grace period. 3. There will be no make-up LE’s or quizzes. For those who missed an LE due to valid reasons, they must present an official excuse slip from the administration before the next LE to remove the missed LE from the LE average; otherwise, a score of zero will be given to the missed exam. Only one (1) valid missed exam is allowed. 4. University rules on absence, cheating, dropping and LOA shall apply. 5. The instructor reserves the right to change class policies when deemed necessary. ChE 122: Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics I

Course Description:

Rules and Guidelines:
