Foundation, Student Activities bring wintry fun to campus

For the first time, SCC hosted an artificial ice rink on its campus on Dec. 7. Complete with a giant walk-in snow globe, “SCC on Ice” offered free ice skate rentals, hot cocoa and coffee for students, faculty, staff and community members. Hosted by SCC Foundation and Student Activities, the event was an all-day affair from 11 a.m.- 8 p.m., including holiday crafts and activities for kids and families in the evening.

“It’s such a good idea. I hope they continue the tradition because it was actually a lot of fun,” said SCC student Alison Berndt.

SCC groups promote good willThe holidays have arrived at SCC, and a flurry of festive

pursuits are in the works across campus.Donations for Joplin schools will be collected during the

Phi Theta Kappa is collecting treats, dry and canned food, grooming supplies and other items for cats and dogs in need at the local St. Charles County Division of Humane Services. Collection boxes are in ADM, SSB and CC until Dec. 9.

Poinsettias will be available for pick-up on Dec. 9 as well. The Student Senate fundraiser helps with the cost for students to attend the spring conference.

The SCC faculty and staff Holiday Social brought employees together from across campus to the Plaza Bistro on Dec. 8.

SCC’s Global Student Network and Multicultural Programming Committee hosted “Holidays Around the World” on Nov. 14, complete with costumes and food from nine different countries.

Global Student Network collected nearly 1,000 pairs of shoes for the Shoeman Water Projects, doubling their 2010 results.

Tau Upsilon Alpha and the Student Nurse Organization adopted a family and collected donations for Sts. Joachim and Ann Care Service. TUA will volunteer at Sts. J&A’s Adopt-a-Family Christmas Program held Dec. 10-11 on the SCC campus.

Men’s Soccer finishes with best record yet; Women’s team names six players to All-Region

In only their third season of intercollegiate play, the Cougars men’s and women’s soccer teams named 10 players to First-Team and Second-Team All-Region XVI of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

The men’s team named an additional six players to First-Team and Second-Team All-MCCAC (Midwest Community College Athletic Conference).

The Cougars’ 2011 season ended with their best record yet at 12-5-1, with a 3-0-1 finish in the conference. The men were ranked third in Region XVI, but lost 1-0 in the semi-final match against Jefferson College.

“Even though we fell short of another championship win,

we had the best record in the program’s history,” said Tom Kearns, men’s head coach. “I’m proud of what this team accomplished.”

The women’s team, 2010 Region XVI champions, lost in the first round this year to Metropolitan Community College (MCC) – Blue River, who were the eventual 2011 Region XVI champions. The Lady Cougars ended the season with a record of 6-7-2.

“We had a tougher schedule this year and played quality competition every game,” said Ashlee Slayback, women’s head coach. “Despite injuries and a small roster, this team constantly worked hard, stayed positive and played together no matter what.”

Midway through the 2011-12 season, new SCC hockey coach Erick Cantrell and the Cougars are in a good spot.

The college’s A team is in first place with a 6-3-1 record. In 10 games, the Cougars have netted 63 goals against their opponents with help from leading goal scorers Alex Wetteroth (12) and Matt Stobart (11). Combining goals and assists, Tommy Wilson is the team’s overall points leader (28).

Drew Ortscheid leads the B team in goals (10). The team ended the first half of the season 5-3-2, which is good enough for third place in their division.

Five leaders recognized by MCCA

Emerson recognizes Darren Osburn

The following received awards at the annual Missouri Community College Association convention held Nov. 2-4 in Branson, Mo.

William Pundmann, president of SCC’s Board of Trustees, received the MCCA Trustee Leadership Award. The award was presented in recognition of Pundmann’s service to SCC and to the mission of community colleges throughout the state.

John McGuire, Ph.D., who retired as SCC president in October 2011, received the MCCA Mel Carnahan Hall of Fame Award for his 15 years of outstanding work as SCC president and as a member of MCCA’s Presidents/Chancellors Council.

Pam Cilek, SCC professor of theater and coordinator of the Theater Program, received MCCA’s Senior Faculty Service Award. The award is presented each year to one faculty member from each of Missouri’s 20 community college campuses.

Vicky Herbel, SCC associate professor of sociology, received the MCCA Global Educator Award. The award was presented in recognition of Herbel’s service to SCC and her commitment to multi-cultural activities and the value of a global education.

Eddie O’Neil, SCC student, received the MCCA Student Leadership Award. The award is presented to one outstanding community college student from each of Missouri’s 20 community college campuses.

Darren Osburn, associate professor of speech and communication, received an Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award. He was one of approximately 100 St. Louis-area educators honored in November by Emerson for their examples of excellence, dedication and commitment to education.

Osburn, of Des Peres, has been a full-time faculty member at SCC for five years. Prior to SCC, he worked in the public relations and foundation office at Ottawa University, and then taught at Donnelly College in Kansas City, Kan. He was voted Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year in 2011 by SCC’s faculty and was named the SCC Global Educator of the Year in 2009. He has a bachelor’s degree from Culver-Stockton College and a master’s from Missouri State University.

Bill Strecker began his tenure at SCC in June as the new dean of the Division of Business, Computer and Social Sciences.

Strecker previously was dean of technology and academic programs at Coffeyville Community College in Coffeyville, Kan., where he was responsible for distance education, technology, the college network, administrative software and supervision of several faculty members.

He was a math instructor for his first 10 years at Coffeyville, and held both teaching and administrative positions during his 21 years there.

The Higher Learning Commission team concluded a three-day evaluation of SCC on Wednesday, Nov. 9. After two years of preparation by the college, a draft of the report on reaccreditation is expected on campus in January. Stay tuned!

The college’s Employee Support Program kick-off resulted in 222 members (44 new) and 28 who have increased their donation. This year, ESP plans to fund $15,000 in scholarships, $4,000 in enhancements, $2,000 in mini-grants and more.

SCC will be one of the Missouri colleges to receive part of the $20 million awarded to Missouri community colleges from the U.S. Department of Labor through MoHealth-WINS, a statewide effort to educate 4,600 more Missourians for health care careers, announced by Gov. Nixon on Sept. 26.

a series of Questions and Answer sessions held in

November and December. Dr. Ron Chesbrough, who

started Oct. 1, fielded questions ranging from hobbies to

educational philosophy. “The open sessions were a great

opportunity to talk about the college and our future as

well as a chance to meet many people,” Chesbrough said.

“I look forward to similar meetings going forward.” More

The week began with a flagpole ceremony, including a 21-Gun Salute, a bagpipe performance of Amazing Grace and a bugler performance of Taps. Community and campus groups involved included the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10350 – Lake St. Louis, American Legion Post 313, Vietnam Veterans of America – St. Peters, the Eastern Missouri Police Academy, the Cottleville Fire Protection District and an array of SCC employees, departments and student groups.

Events included a talk about the history of Jefferson Barracks by Retired Maj. Arthur Schuerman, historical preservationist for the Jefferson Barracks Air National Guard Base; a student-veteran panel with SCC students Ryan Zull, Isaac Hardy and Tyler Dunn, who shared experiences on life in the military; and a presentation by Sarah Shia, psychologist at the St. Louis VA Medical Center, on post-traumatic stress disorder.

Four performances of United We Stand: A Tribute to the United Service Organizations of World War II recreated the patriotic radio shows of World War II. With music by the Blue Knights, the show was produced by Hal Berry.
