PRINCIPAL – Mr. Birnbaum: I write this chatter on Veteran's Day while thinking about the men and women

that have gone into military service and into war to allow us the freedom we enjoy and take for granted, protecting us from forces we may never know. I especially praise God for sending his Son into this sin filled world and ultimately defeating the old evil foe (as Martin Luther wrote around 500 years ago). As we remember our Veterans, let us remember the blessing God has bestowed on our country and pray that our Christian religious freedom regain strength.

SPIRIT WEEK: In celebration of our first home game on Tuesday, November 25 vs. Woodlands (Games at 4:30, 5:30, 6:30, and 7:30), spirit week is November 17-21. Show your team spirit and cheer on the Cardinals by participating in these fun days next week:

FULL DAY PRESCHOOL for 3 year old children - We are considering opening a Full Day Preschool for three year olds starting Monday - January 5th. Melissa Flaherty has served as an Early Childhood Director in New Mexico for the past five years and has recently moved to Ponca. She is working on developing a full day Pre-school schedule, purchasing or getting items donated for learning centers, and re-designing the Day Care classroom. Mrs. Herard will still teach our Mon/Wed/Fri. and Tue/Thu. preschool morning classes; however, if you or someone you know would be interested in a five morning or full day program, please contact the school as soon as possible.

LIBRARY/BOOK FAIR: The book fair has arrived, and we are busy getting it ready. If you would like to help man the book fair next week or pack up on Tuesday, November 25, please let me know!!! See the attached flier for the book fair schedule or visit bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/flspc. Note that you may order online and we will get credit for your purchase. It will be sent to FLS the week after Thanksgiving, and shipping is free!

COLLECTING PONCA CITY SANTA BUCKS – The Ponca City Santa Ticket giveaway has begun. If you are NOT collecting the Ponca City Santa Tickets, please consider donating yours to the school. We would like the opportunity to win the money for the School Scholarship Fund. Please send yours on or before December 22; the earlier the better so that we can get them organized for the big night.

CHAPEL OFFERING: November chapel offering is a canned food drive, to help fill the church food pantry. Please bring canned or boxed non perishable food items to chapel each week in November. Next week will be our Bedlam/Favorite Team contest. You are doing a great job of bringing food!

IN LEIU OF CHAPEL ON NOVEMBER 19, we will have a rehearsal for Grandparent’s Day. Parents are welcome to attend, but be aware this is a practice rehearsal.

THE FAMILY PROJECT FROM FOCUS ON THE FAMILY is a 12 week DVD and discussion series starting on Sunday, December 7 from 9:45-10:45. Turn in $10 per family (checks made to FLS) by November 25 to register. Check out www.thefamilyproject.com for more information.

GIFT CARD/SCRIP SALES: Black Friday is coming; are you prepared? A lot of you will begin your Christmas shopping in 2 weeks; be sure to stop by the school office and pick up scrip for the stores that you are planning on visiting. The retailers sell the gift cards to PTL at a discount, PTL sells them to you at face value, and then PTL uses the profit to purchase/fund activities for the school! A list showing what scrip is available/on hand for purchase in the school office is attached, but there are many more merchants available for ordering! VISION SCREENING: Students at First Lutheran School will have their vision screened on Tuesday, November 18, at no cost to the parents. If your student is found to need a follow-up with an eye-care professional, you will receive a letter stating so. If you do not want to have your child’s vision screened, please fill out the attached form and return to your student’s teacher/the school office by Friday, November 14, 2014. Please contact the office if you have any questions.

VISION SCREENING VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: We need 2 volunteers to help for a few hours with the vision screening on Tuesday, November 18. If you are able to help with this, please contact the office. Thank you!

BASKETBALL SEASON PASS: We have season passes available for home basketball games for the 2014-2015 school year! They will be $20 for adults, $15 for Senior Citizens, and $10 for students. These passes will be good for home games only, not including tournaments. If you would like to purchase one, the passes may be purchased in the school office.

3RD ANNUAL CHRISTMAS MARKET: The 3rd Annual Christmas Market Oklahoma Festival will be held Saturday, December 6, 2014 on our church and school campus. Booth fees benefit the First Lutheran School Scholarship Fund. We are currently accepting applications from artisans, crafters, and vendors. If you, or a church/school group or class would like to have a booth to raise money for a specific need, we would be delighted to have you participate. PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Herard: Brr! I think we skipped fall and started winter. The children have been working very hard on songs for chapel and Grandparents Day! We do great in class-hope we can keep it together in front of an audience! If you haven't already, please consider offering help for Grandparent's Day. Food, decorations, serving and cleaning up, or being a greeter are some of the ways you can help. Thanks room moms for the time and effort you are giving. Remember to return Stephen Fite forms and money soon. This week we are learning about turkeys and the letter H.

PRE-KINDERGARTEN - Mrs. Kelly: It was great to see you in chapel today! We are now working hard on our Grandparents' Day program. Chapel offering is a canned food drive for our food pantry. The contest next week will be Bedlam/Favorite team. Stephen Fite field trip information came home last Wednesday. Please return the permission slips and money to me by Monday. I also sent a new Highlights order form out. Please sign and return it, even if you don't want to order. Our class earns free things for our classroom from these. If you need a new one, let me know and I will get you one. Our Bible words are, Give us this day our daily bread. Matthew 6:11. We are learning the letter "C" and the number "6" this week. KINDERGARTEN - Ms. Miller: Please return your Stephen Fite Concert field trip form by this next Monday the 17th. Also, please look for your Grandparents' Day invitations in your child's backpack today. It will be Tuesday, November 25th at 9:30 in the school gym. Lunch tickets cost $5.00 and please RSVP to the office by Thursday the 20th (580-762-9950). If your child's grandparents can't come, please ask an older person to be a substitute. Have a great week!

FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: Memory verse for Friday - Give thanks to the Lord, for His steadfast love endures forever. 2 Chronicles 20:21. Field trip forms and money for the Stephen Fite concert are due on Monday, November 17. November reading logs for Book It will be due on Monday, Dec. 1. Grandparent invitations are coming home today. SECOND GRADE – Mrs. Powell: Chilly greetings on this very cold November day! Have you invited your child's grandparents to share the day with us on November 25? Special invitations will be coming home. Please remind grandparents to save the date. We have several family turkey projects returned and several book report turkeys returned. Thanks so much for your help with these. They look amazing and so far everyone has had fun completing their projects. We're looking forward to the play at Roosevelt School on November 20. If you haven't already returned the permission slip for that event please do so soon. Grades 2 through 5 will be going to see a production at Cowley County College in Arkansas City on December 1. Please sign and return the permission portion of the note with the $1 admission fee (per person) by Friday the 21 of November. Remember to GIVE THANKS! Blessings. . .

THIRD GRADE - Mrs. Steichen: Burr; it is getting cold! Please make sure your kids come with a jacket. They will be going outside to go to lunch, gym, and to read to the Pre-K. This week: Test in Spelling on Friday. Math: We just took a test and we will be getting those grades back soon, look for a test next week again. Science: test next week over Plants and Animals. Reading: We are reading Herbie Jones together as a class for the next two weeks. Everyone might have some questions to answer on some nights if they are not able to finish in class. Grandparent's Day: Please mark your calendars for Monday, November 24th at 2:45; we will be doing a dress rehearsal just for you parents. Please have costumes and video cameras ready. Book Report: Everyone has picked their book; please make sure they are reading. This project is due December 7th. Have a great week!!!

FOURTH GRADE - Mrs. Sibley: Oh my how the weather has changed! Don’t forget your coat here at school or at home in these cold windy days. I pray that you keep warm in these cold winter days. Keep reading for AR and Book-IT. A lot of us are putting up our bowling party pieces, and are looking in good shape. We are steadily working on our Grandparent Day project. Book Reports are due on the 24th. Please remember that you need your Book Report Guidance Sheet and your new version of the story in your new book. Don’t hesitate to ask if you have a question.

FIFTH GRADE - Mrs. Schatte: We are working hard and enjoying the beautiful fall days here in 5th grade. The weather forever keeps us on our toes! If at all possible the children go outside at recess. Often times 5th graders leave the house in shorts and no jacket and then freeze when they have to go outside. Just a gentle reminder to be sure your child has appropriate clothing to be outside in the cooler weather. Tests this week include language on Thursday and spelling, reading and math on Friday. Mrs. Harbeson: Are you ready for winter?! As I write this on Monday evening, I'm only imagining the cold

temperatures that are in store for the rest of this week! Things are really hopping at the middle school with all the different activities going on! Mid-quarter reports are coming out today. Any student with a grade under 70% will receive a notice. We do this so our students can buckle down and get those grades back up before the end of the quarter. Handing in every assignment on time, being prepared for class, and studying for tests and quizzes will assure you of good grades. Don't give up! You can do it! We celebrated Veteran's Day today in chapel. Thank you to all those parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, and friends who have served and are serving our great country. You are truly appreciated! For the rest of November, please bring canned or boxed food to help fill our food pantry. This is the time of year that some families really need that extra help, so bring what you can. Please check my bulletin board to stay updated on tests, quizzes, assignments, and projects (and possibly some extra credit!) That's it for now! Stay warm...blessings on the rest of your week!

Mrs. Hanson: 7th Grade is going to the Salt Mines in Hutchinson, KS this Friday. Please pack a sack lunch; we will not be stopping. Take a look on my website for some awesome videos we made of the rock cycle.

6th Grade will have a quiz this Friday. 8th Grade is making "cell factories". Ask your student to describe their factory and how it is like a real cell. Cheerleaders are asked to stay after school this Friday to help decorate for spirit week. Mrs. Goll: About 20 students have collected on the five extra credit points I’ve offered this past week. The

deadline is this Friday. This extra credit effort requires parent participation, so if you’re in the dark, your child has not completed the task to receive the five points. Second quarter is typically quite a bit more demanding than is first quarter in all subjects. In math, students need to do the written work required, but also would greatly benefit from frequent review of vocabulary and examples in the book. Remember, I’m here on Tuesday and Thursday after school from 3:30 to 4:30 and am happy to help any student (or parent) who has questions. Mr. Covert: Hello and welcome to another week! Things are running smoothly along in classes this week. In 8th grade, we’re talking about the Revolutionary War, and getting set to move into the Constitution and how we arrived at the document that founded our nation as we know it. In 7th grade, we just finished up Central America, and have moved down into South America, looking at the geography and how it influenced the history of this region. In 6th grade, we’re working through the cultural contributions the Greeks left us, such as theater, sports, and science.

I hope the week has been going well, and we’re all staying warm as winter seems to have finally showed up. God’s blessing on the rest of your week!

ELIGIBILITY TO PARTICIPATE (team sports, cheerleading, or other extra-curricular activities): With the

approaching track season, please remember that students involved in extra-curricular activities will have their grade status evaluated at the beginning of every three weeks. A student who has a grade below 70% in any subject will be put on probation. During that time, the student will be given an opportunity to raise the grade above 69.9%. The student must take action to raise the grade. Failure to raise the grade will result in suspension from the extra-curricular activity until the next three week grade check. After the first probationary period, a student will be suspended from the extra-curricular activity when any grade drops below 70%. Suspensions are enforced and lifted on the first school day of the week. (Any students failing a subject on their report card will be suspended from extra-curricular activities until all grades are passing at the three week check point.)
