RECORDING OUR SCHOOL SONG

Last Tuesday, five students accompanied by Mr

Matt Zarb, Ms Kerry Cowan, Mr Muller and Mr

Royan travelled to Jake Davey’s recording studio

to record our new school anthem. It was a great

experience especially for the students. Photos can

be seen on the Manning River Times website and

HELPING CHILDREN REGULATE THEIR

EMOTIONS.

Children often have difficulty managing their emo-

tions. Parents frequently find it difficult to help

them to appropriately express their emotions.

Here are some tips.

Talk to them about feelings and emotions. Help

him or her to recognise different emotions and

how to develop their own ways of coping when

their emotions are out of control. Individuals have

different ways of gaining control so some trial and

error will be needed to see what works.

Some suggestions: Listening to music is soothing

as is drawing or painting, going to a quiet area or

drinking a glass of water.

Praise them when they are responding appropri-

ately.

When they are out of control wait until they have

calmed down before discussing the incident.

When they are calm ask them what response

would have been more appropriate.

Be aware of your own ways of coping and lead by

example.

Encourage your offspring to be kind to them-

selves. Children who are kind to themselves be-

come more resilient. Encourage them to talk to

themselves as if they are their own very best

friend.

Our school is participating in Hunter New

England Health’s Good for Kids, Good for Life

program which has been working with schools

in our region for more than a decade to

implement healthy eating and physical activity

programs.

As part of the program Good for Kids are

returning in term 4, 2018, to measure the

activity levels of students. Students who

participated in the initial data collection last

year (Yrs 2 & 3, 2017) will again be wearing an

accelerometer each day while at school for one

school week. An accelerometer is worn on the

wrist and looks like a watch but captures

activity levels.

This data is collected to assist in providing

support in schools with the scheduling of

physical activity. This includes the provision of

professional development for our staff as well

as the provision of resources and on-going

support from the Good for Kids team.
