    Jessica’s Journal

    Hello! Welcome Summer!!

Lots going on here at the Shores! Our furniture has been delivered

for our first phase of renovation. We are now just waiting on the

Department of Health to come out and inspect. How exciting! What

this mean for you is, soon our Business Office will be moving from

its current location to the hallway going towards Bridges.

Additionally, this means we will be starting Phase 2 which will then move our main entrance

to the back entrance of the building. All resident parking will then be in the back of the

building and we will be adding additional handicap spaces near the door. I will make sure we

communicate this exact date. Please start reminding your family and friends this transition will

    be taking place soon.

Our mailbox system for assisted living residents will be taken away during the Phase 2 project.

Just a reminder we will be hand delivering the mail to you during this time. There is nothing

you will need to do at this time. Our goal is to have all mail delivered by 4:00pm daily.

Dining declining balance was certainly a topic at our Town Hall meeting. I will have the

sample menu and FAQ’s sheet available for your review to pick up by 7/5/2019. I will place

this near the copies of the resident council notes outside the main dining room. PLEASE, come

to me with any questions you may have. This system will certainly makes things more in your

    control, than ours.

Just a friendly reminder…. Our call bell/pendants are for emergency use. It seems we have a

variety of reason the pendants are being pressed. Some examples are: channel changing, fixing

things in apartments, opening and closing blinds and many other things that are none related to

nursing. If you need assistance with items such as the ones I have mentioned you can also call

the desk and request assistance. The pendant/emergency call bell system is for nursing

services. Some examples would be assistance with bathing, dressing, toileting, and

    emergencies.

I want to thank the residents who are helping make sure we stay fire safety compliant. The

dining rooms are much less crowded with assistive devices. I will continue to work to make

sure waiting for your device to be returned to you at the end of the meal is timely.

As always, it is a pleasure to serve you and my door is always open if you need anything.

    Warmly,

    Jessica

    CHAPLAIN’S CORNER

    Happy July Shore Family!

We are excited to see the cold weather disappear and a wonderful summer begin! This month we will celebrate Independence Day on July 4th! There will be barbecues, family gatherings, fireworks and parades. We have Bible Study each Monday at 10:30 am in the Town Hall. We are presently studying “The Names of God.” We have been examining the 23rd Psalm. God is called JEHOVAH-ROHI which means The Lord is my Shepherd. We are learning that we are called to be sheep who are totally dependent on God, the shepherd.

We are to trust, obey and follow God’s direction. Ironically, we live in a society that celebrates individual independence. We are groomed to believe that we must think and make decisions independently. That’s not a bad mindset, if we are including God‘s will in our thinking process. How many decisions have we made in our lives without the counsel of God? Independently do we still see life and its decisions through the “Big I” lens? Or are we living and moving on God’s plan and timetable? The independence that we celebrate as a nation should not carry over into our relationship with God. As children of God, we should never have an “independence day”. Instead, we should live dependently on JEHOVAH –ROHI, our personal shepherd. He sees and knows what the whole parade of our life looks like. He knows the pitfalls, joys, blessings and trials that have come and will come into our lives. He is always willing to show us the way to live the best life. Whether we are grazing on the mountain top or in the valley, He is our shepherd. May July be a month of bountiful blessings to you! ~Pastor Marcia

As The Wrench Turns – Behind the

Scenes Heroes By Michele A. Fabiano, Director of Building Services

Most of you know what it’s like to be a homeowner –

its great owning a piece of property, you have your own

space and your own stuff – that is until the repairs start.

As the years pass, they seem to never end. It’s always

something a leak, clog, the roof, gutters or some sort of

inconvenient repair. The Shores is no different – we are

a giant household with lots of people, building systems

    and yes, repairs.

The behind the scene teams who work hard to do those repairs are the facilities maintenance

and environmental services teams. They often don’t get the recognition they deserve!

Collectively the maintenance team has 150 years of experience in various trades – including:

painting, HVAC, boilers, plumbing, electrical and more. Together they combine their skills to

make repairs and solve problems or tackle emergencies daily. They are some of the Behind the

    Scenes Heroes at the Shores.

The team, consisting of Operations Manager and Director of the Environmental Services Team

Bryant, Maintenance Technicians Duff, Tom, Rick, Dan and our Office Assistant Maria meets

every morning at 9:00am. We discuss current projects, work orders, compliance, emergencies,

current repairs, and vendors coming and going. As the day progresses they troubleshoot

    emergencies too.

For the month of May each member of the team was awarded Sodex Sparx gift cards for the

improvement in work order response and completion.

Maria, our office assistant, works in the back and keeps on top of us with supply orders, paper

work, work orders and our compliance for the state. She is an asset to our team and I am

    grateful for her assistance.

It is very important that all work requests get input into our computer system. If you have a

work request, please call the front desk. We need to have a record of repairs, many for

warranty purposes. I thank everyone who is helping to make this possible so the facilities

maintenance and environmental services departments can be more efficient to meet resident

    and building needs.

Please take a moment to congratulate and thank the team on their continued hard work and for

the great job they are doing at our Shores Community.

The Doghouse By Michele A. Fabiano, Director of Building Services

You won’t believe what happened to me a few weeks ago! I

was playing with my littermates and having fun with my Mom,

who had already warned us, that at the age of 10 weeks, we

would be sent to work. WORK! What could I possibly do at 10

    weeks old?

Mom was right and it happened! I was one of the first to leave. Mom said it was because I had

such a good disposition and was the sweetest of the litter. Bathed and prepped for my journey,

I was then loaded into my pet taxi and departed the Missouri airport. My next stop was Atlanta,

Georgia, then to LaGuardia Airport, New York before finally arriving in Philadelphia,

Pennsylvania. Talk about exhausting! I was then handed over to my new boss Jessica and

foster Mom Mary Kate and my journey continued.

The next day I received a royal welcome at the Shores, where I am a new associate. I bet I’m

one of the first in my family to travel so far and have such an important title and role – The

Shores Therapy Dog! I meet new people every day. Visitors, residents, associates, and other

pets walk and play with me. It can be exhausting and since I’m still growing, I do need my rest

during the day. If you see me sleeping, please don’t wake me up.

I have to say, my Mom was right when she said everything was going to be ok. I really hit the

jackpot and live like a millionaire. My foster Mom Mary Kate is the Director of Community

Life. We live in a house in Somers Point with a yard to play in and a big fluffy bed. My best

buddy is Tess, an eight-year old, long hair calico cat, who was adopted too. We watch

television together and love to wrestle and have fun.

I love riding in the car to work, enjoy going over the bridge every day and learning more about

Ocean City. My first outing was to the vet. It wasn’t too bad getting my shots and having my

    nails clipped.

I was told my work would begin soon. The trainer will come and work with me, the associates

and residents. Apparently, I need to learn some commands and how to be a great therapy dog. I

plan on working very hard to be the best and I look forward to all the fun we are going to have

    as the journey continues!

Environmental Services By Michele Fabiano, Director of Building Services

    Laundry! It’s a Dirty Job

One would think that with all the technological progress and

the invention of the washer and dryer that this should be a

simple chore. It’s not like we are washing clothing in the

    river!

For many, just the word, laundry evokes many memories –

perhaps the dreaded lint trap, refusal to fold or iron, the

laundry basket in the middle of the house, missing items,

washing or drying the wrong items or colors together.

My mother was a stay at home mom or as she refers to it, “a domestic engineer” before she

went back to her nursing career. She still wants to know why I can’t fold the sheets correctly!

In any event - laundry – it’s a challenge! When I left my last job I was glad to leave the

laundry department behind! It was never fun as something was always amiss. So coming to the

Shores, a much larger building, I was prepared to be in for some challenges. Helping to ensure

    laundry flows daily is Jen.

Jen, is another one of those Behind the Scene Heroes who make life easier at the Shores!

Hidden in the back of the house in the commercial laundry room, you can find her sorting,

folding, weighing, recording the number of pounds, hanging, checking pockets for

miscellaneous items, cleaning lint traps, soiled clothing, getting things on the right racks and

delivering are just of few of the mundane tasks she manages effortlessly.

I applaud Jen for her continued diligence and hard work. And when I’m informed that one of

the machines needs some sort of repair, Jen still manages to make the laundry process flow

smoothly. When more help is needed the housekeeping team pitches in.

I also have to thank Bryant, my Operations Manager and leader of environmental services for

supporting his staff and managing room remodels, cleaning, laundry, scheduling, trash,

emergencies and pitching in when needed to assist with building operations.

Jen is now training Ivori to work with her. Ivori is so friendly and a welcome addition to the

team. We appreciate their hard work and dedication.

Since they work unseen, in the back of the house, please leave a note at the front desk for Jen

to let her know how much you appreciate her and her commitment to the residents of The

    Shores!

    The Giving

    Corner Submitted by Kerileigh Sherman

This past April I had an

    amazing opportunity to serve

as part of The Missionaries of

    the Poor, an international

religious institute dedicated to serving the poorest of the poor. The

Missionaries of the Poor was founded in 1981. The institute was

formed by bringing together the poor, homeless and disabled and

building a community of brothers and priests who live in community

    to serve them.

I traveled with a team of nurses, doctors and social workers to

Kingston, Jamaica. There are several shelters run by Missionaries of

the Poor in Kingston and each day we had an opportunity to visit a

new shelter. Each shelter served a specific population; children, men,

women and older adults. We helped out wherever we could in the

shelters. Some tasks we assisted with were helping dress the

residents, putting lotion on them, brushing their teeth and feeding

them their meals. The nurses and doctors helped in the clinics with

the sick and wounded residents. In the afternoon we had time to just

relax with the residents. We played games, told stories and sang

songs together. Their favorite songs to sing were Christmas songs. It

felt a bit odd to sing Christmas songs in 90 degree weather but none of us cared that it wasn’t

the right time of year. We were just happy to sing songs together that we all knew the words to.

One of my most memorable experiences was getting the residents dressed and ready for the

Sunday church service. When everyone was ready, we walked the street to the community

church and along the way we were met with the residents from each of the other nearby

shelters. All the residents from every shelter spent the morning together worshiping in church,

as they do every Sunday. In this way I saw how “family” does not only mean blood relatives

because the residents and the brothers have truly become a family to one another.

On our last day we visited each of the shelters to say goodbye. We were showered with high

fives, hugs and kisses from the residents. I felt like I had known them much longer than only a

week! I gained many friends on this trip and left with countless warm memories. The trip

opened my eyes to so many luxuries that I take for granted every day. Most of all I learned

that there is no better feeling than to volunteer your time to help others in need.
