CHART | ART FAIR was created in 2013 with the vision of strengthening the role of the Nordic countries in the international art market. With CHART now in its second year the fair has already established a strong position.

The grand exhibition spaces of Charlottenborg Kunsthal allow us to present art as it should be seen, breaking the convention of art fair booths, providing a welcoming platform for exhibiting and viewing art in the Nordic region. With CHART you get something more, an ambitious international talks and performance program, solo shows and curated projects, innovative pop-up food stalls and a party with DJ’s and live bands in the unique courtyard of the baroque Charlottenborg Palace, all brought together through the collective support of the exhibiting galleries.

This year 27 carefully selected galleries from Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark present a wide range of contemporary art including large scale works, precisely curated projects, and site-specific artworks and interventions inside and outside the premises of the fair.

CHART will spotlight the latest developments in the visual arts, offering visitors and participants new ideas, new inspiration and new contacts in the art world and sharpening the interest – both internationally and locally – for the art and artists presented in the Nordic countries.

Welcome and enjoy the fair

ANDERSEN’S CONTEMPORARY

Andersen’s Contemporary originally began as a project space in Linienstrasse in Berlin called Andersen’s Wohnung. Andersen’s Wohnung existed from 1996 to 1999 as an alternative art space run by Danish artist Claus Andersen and German artists Thilo Heinzmann and Anselm Reyle. The gallery opened in Copenhagen in 2005 based on Claus Andersen’s German connections and started out with artists he worked with in Berlin, amongst whom Henrik Olesen, Anselm Reyle, Olafur Eliasson and Tomás Saraceno. Today the gallery represents a variety of emerging and established artists from throughout the world. A key feature of the gallery’s programme is a focus on conceptually rigorous artistic practices that participate in a vital dialogue between art and the broader socio-cultural currents in contemporary society.

GALLERI NICOLAI WALLNER

Since opening in 1993, Galleri Nicolai Wallner has defined itself as a focal point within the Danish and the international contemporary art scene. Quickly establishing a reputation for representing some of the most challenging and innovative artists of this generation, the gallery works with artists who, as a group, are not bound by a specific medium or shared aesthetic. Rather, they represent a common intention to express content, to tell a story, and to set a mark in an otherwise fluctuating world. The artists of the gallery have realized widespread recognition, and have had their work shown in galleries, museums and biennials throughout Europe, the Americas and Asia.

NIELS BORCH JENSENGALLERY & EDITIONSNiels Borch Jensens Editions has been making original prints in limited editions, signed and numbered by the artist, since the print shop was founded in 1979. Among the professional print shops in Europe, Niels Borch Jensen has over the years established a position as one of the most competent in classical graphic techniques. The aim has been to find ways of bringing the essential character of the artist’s work into their print projects. The artist and the printer mutually challenge each other, and occasionally come up with innovative or unorthodox approaches to the medium. In 1999 Niels Borch Jensen Edition and Gallery opened in Berlin. In 2012, a showroom in connection with the original print shop in Copenhagen opened on Prags Boulevard, recently joined by shop on Bredgade, Copenhagen.

PEDER LUND

After a long period of art dealership with internationally acclaimed artists to central institutions and art collections in Norway and Scandinavia, Peder Lund established an exhibition programme in November 2009. The exhibition programme reflects a long-time focus on internationally esteemed classical contemporary art, with inclusions of Modern artists, and on occasion, young contemporary artists. The gallery works in direct collaboration with the exhibited artists or their estates, but on a project basis with the aim to show and disseminate institution-level quality works of art in Oslo. Peder Lund moved to new and larger premises in September 2012. The gallery now neighbors the new Astrup Fearnley Museum designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop, and the recently opened Sculpture Park at Tjuvholmen.

Condesa offers a modern take on Mexican cuisine and draws on other influences from around the globe. The menu is inspired by the raw, fresh and green and accompanied by succulent cocktails and DJ’s.

New Yorker style restaurant, with a relaxed atmospherein the bistro price range. Head chef Bjørn Rosendal Jacobsen (who has worked at Tetsuya in Sydney and at WD50 in New York) is now running the kitchen. Outdoor serving and open to 2.00 AM on Fridays and Saturdays, with cocktails.

Ché Fè is the most organic trattoria in Scandinavia. We celebrate a kitchen where quality and taste are at the heart of everything that we create. Only additives are ‘love’, ‘time’ and ‘respect’ – seasoned with a joy for the convivial and simple meal.

The Era Ora cooking philosophy is “Italian Inner Fusion”. Italian Inner Fusion has origins in the vast variety of gastronomies within its own borders, where local history, climate and anarchic minds have created a food universe of infinite possibilities, countless elements and never ending combinations.

The new endeavor from the former head chef at Noma,Matt Orlando. “The words that come to our minds when we think of our menu,” he says, “are spontaneous, fresh, exciting, and thought-provoking”. This place has just opened and has already been labeled a new “Copenhagen hotspot”.

An eatery where you can relax, unwind and enjoy the moment. The place can boast of a lively atmosphere, with great spots for eating at the bar. The menu consists of a wide range of savory dishes and sweet treats. Geist also has a bar that serves great cocktails. Geist is mentioned in the Michelin Guide.

The renowned chef Rasmus Oubæk’s small and intimate French restaurant features a 5-course menu as well as a la carte offerings, with classics like Tournedos Rossini & Fried Foie Gras.

The restaurant is situated on the 8th floor overlooking Fælled-parken (Common Gardens) in the center of Copenhagen. From here, there is a beautiful view out over the park, where you can also catch a glimpse of the city’s green copper roofs and the windmills that are “wading” and turning in the Øresund. Just this year, Geranium has been awarded with two Michelin stars.

Dinning at Bistro Boheme feels almost like sitting in the heart of Paris. In the Danish “Spiseliv” guide, this restau-rant has garnered the “Best Brasserie/bistro” prize in both 2008 and 2012. The place has a vibrant atmosphere and serves a combination of Danish and French cuisine. Bistro Boheme is mentioned in the Michelin Guide.

Café Victor is one of Copenhagen’s oldest cafes. Here you can choose between a lot of delicious lunches, inspired both by Danish traditions and French bistro food. The place has an international vibe and has many tables for an outside lunch or dinner while enjoying the street life of Copenhagen.

“ … To the greatest possible extent, the kitchen uses organic and biodynamic ingredients. The café’s menu has gradually been widening its range of offerings, involving a marked change in the featured cuisine to-ward molecular gastronomy.”

French cafe with dishes such as Croque Monsieur, Croque Madame and Salade Chèvre Chaud. Very nice and personal atmosphere. The café is situated in a tiny but cozy courtyard. A little gem in the noisy city.

Owners’ motto: “We have opened a bar, where we ourselves would like to go to. We want guests to feel at home here – like they are visiting our home. That’s why we have brought in sofas and floor lamps – so that people feel at home!”

One of the most refined bars in Copenhagen. Situated in an old apartment. Their motto is: “We focus on classic cocktails here but we’re not shy about creating our own unique drinks, either.”

It is well hidden but anybody who can find the secret dooris a welcome guest. You’ll find neither an address nor a sign. Only a black locked door. Come and enjoy the secret party, the champagne and the drinks.

Drinking champagne is a party! Cool, decadent and brand new, Balthazar raises the bar with its oysters and its champagnes. Might just be the most beautifully decorated bar in Copenhagen. Situated in the newly re-opened and classy Hotel D’Angleterre.

CHART PERFORMANCE

FRIDAY 29 AUGUST

Sophie Dupont - Marking BreathFrom Friday 29 August 4pm (Staircase). Duration: The duration of the performance is usually from sunrise to sunset. In this case the duration is during the entire fair from start to end of opening hours. 3 pieces of 18 Carat Gold of 355g, 10 x 23 x 0,2 cm.

Sophie Dupont’s Performance ‘Marking Breath’ explores the ritual repetition of the most important and simple action in life: breathing. The performance contains no plot, no story, no narrative progression – only body, breath, marks and time. The work is meditative and reductive in form and content exploring the discrete/invisible sign of presence and existence, breath, and transforming it into physical/visible marks.

Dorit Chrysler - Thermin4pm (Altan.dk balcony). Duration: 20 min.

Dorit Chrysler is a modern-day pioneer in the use of the world’s oldest electronic instrument, theremin. In her performance the sound of the avant-garde instrument is combined with her voice in enchanting musical compositions.

SATURDAY 30 AUGUST

Matthew Stone - Other Worlds12.15pm & 1.15pm (Ground floor next to the book shop). Duration: 30 min.

Stemming from the artists interest in shamanism and altered states, the performance includes an immersive and hypnotic musical score (written by Stone) and dance choreographed in collaboration with Louise Midjord. Part cathartic spectacle and part sensory-deprived ecstasy technique, ‘Other Worlds’ is designed to invoke a metaphysical and highly personal journey created by each participant.

COURTYARD

Exceptional collaborations with gastronomy, music and design play an intrinsic role in the execution and enrichment of the art fair. The unique courtyard of the baroque Charlottenborg Palace will throughout the weekend be buzzing with activity.

This year CHART has created an exciting architectural competition for newly graduated and current students of The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture and Aarhus School of Architecture. 7 teams of young, aspiring, up and coming talented architects will each design, develop and construct one pavilion which will be situated in the main entrance courtyard of Charlottenborg. Each team has been assigned one company to work with in order to design a pavilion for their needs and products. All 7 proposals will be realized and built and evaluated on a number of factors by a distinguished jury: Bjarke Ingels, Dorte Foss and Jeppe Hein. One team will be selected as the winner of the competition and receive a prize Sunday 30 August at 1pm.

The courtyard and food stalls will be open to the public throughout the duration of the fair.
