The idea for this pattern came to me when working in my garden on a bit of a cold afternoon. The amount of spiders that I unearthed that decided to crawl up my legs whilst I tidied up the weeds and rubble began to unnerve me and I am not one to be scared of a few creepy crawlies in the garden!

So the crawling spider knee socks were born, having these cute little bugs creeping and winding their web up the front and back of my leg is a lot more appealing than the real thing!

Enjoy knitting and don’t be afraid!

cast on: CO 8 provisional sts and work five rows in stockinette, ending on the RS. The needle your sts are on is Needle 1. Unravel the provisional cast-on edge and retrieve the 8 sts with a new needle [note: this can be finicky; if you find you only have 7 sts, m1 to compensate, by pulling up one st from below to serve as the 8th].

With Needle 1, pick up and knit 1 selvage st (left side).

With a new needle (now Needle 2), pick up and knit 1 selvage st, k4.

With a new needle (now Needle 3), k4, pick up and knit 1 selvage st (right side).

With another new needle, pick up and knit 1 selvage st, and knit across Needle 1.

There are now 20 sts: 10 on Needle 1; 5 on Needle 2; 5 on Needle 3.

Knit one round. Tip: thread the tail to use as a marker at the start of Needle 1.

toe round 1: k1, yo, sl5 sts wyf, k to last st, yo, k2, m1, k to last st of Needle 3,

m1, k1 round 2: (and all even rounds) k all sts round 3: k1, yo, k1, sl 5 wyf, k to last st, yo, k2, m1, k to last st of Needle 3, m1, k1 round 5: k1, yo, k2, sl5 wyf, k to last st, yo, k2, m1, k to last st of Needle 3, m1, k1 round 7: k1, yo, k3, sl5 wyf, k to last st, yo, k2, m1, k to last st of Needle 3, m1, k1 round 9: k1, yo, k6, plk, k4, sl5 wyf, k to last st, yo, k2, m1, k to last st of Needle 3, m1, k1 round 11: k1, yo, k12, sl5 wyf, k1, yo, k2, m1, k to last st of Needle 3, m1, k1 round 13: k1, yo, k13, sl5 wyf, k2, yo, k2, m1, k to last st of Needle 3, m1, k1 round 15: k15, sl5 wyf, k to end round 17: k18, plk, k to end round 18: k all sts.

You should now have a total of 48 sts shared between 3 needles; 24 on Needle 1 (top of foot) and 12 each on Needles 2 and 3 (sole)

rounds 19 and 20: k all sts

foot Work Spider Web chart over Needle 1 and knit all sole sts until you have worked 70% of the desired foot length. Begin heel at the end of Needle 1.

heel flap Set up round: Needle 1: k 3 from Needle 2; Needle 2: k all sts; Needle 3: k to last 4 sts, sl 3 sts from Needle 3 to Needle 1, sl1 p-wise wyf

row 1 (WS): k1, p to the last st, sl1 p-wise wyf, turn row 2 (RS): k to the last st, sl1 p-wise wyf, turn

Repeat rows 1 and 2 until entire sole inclusive of the flap measures 95% of the desired foot length, ending on RS row.

heel turn, part 2 part 1 row 1 (WS): sl1 p-wise, p to the last 2 sts, turn row 2: (RS): sl1 k-wise, k to the last 2 sts, turn row 3: sl1 p-wise, p until 2 sts before the gap, turn row 4: sl1 k-wise, k until 2 sts before the gap, turn

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until all of the sts are worked

Next round: pick up and k your slipped selvage sts down the side of the heel flap (this number will vary according to how long you knit your heel flap; I had 12 slipped sts) and k 3 sts from Needle 1.

Work established pattern over Needle 1 to last 3 sts.

Transfer these 3 sts from Needle 1 to Needle 2, knit them, then pick up and knit your selvage sts from the side of the heel flap and k5 from Needle 3.

the end round 6: Needle 1: work established pattern; Needles 2 and 3: k all sts

Repeat rounds 5 and 6 until 12 sts remain on Needles 2 and 3. You should have 48 sts in total.

leg Continue in established Spider Web pattern over Needle 1 and work Crawling Spider twice (two full repeats of the 30-round chart) over Needles 2 and 3. Note: needle 1 follows the spider web pattern up to the cuff set up

Now work Calf Increases over needles 2 and 3

Work one more repeat of Crawling Spider (30 rounds) then begin cuff set up.

You are not necessarily going to end on a completed pattern repeat of the spider web chart; however, that is not problem! This is just as far as your spiders span their web!

cuff set up round 1: k16, m1, k16, m1, k16, m1, k16, m1 (increase of 4 sts taking total sts to 68) round 2–5: k1, p1 round 6: [ssk, yo] repeat to end round 7: k all sts
