Charleston RiverDogs Game Notes · 2020. 2. 4. · • Wilkerman Garcia, Red Sox Killer: Charleston...

Last RiverDogs Game: May 3 Josh Breaux touched off for his third home run in the last four days and shortstop Wilkerman Garcia added a key insurance tally with a leadoff blast in the eighth as Charleston rode the longball to their fifth consecutive victory on Friday night with a 7-5 win over the Drive at Fluor Field. Breaux’s three- run blast on the first pitch he saw from reliever Brendan Nail sailed over the left-center wall and into an open apartment window for a no-doubt blast that made it 6-2 RiverDogs in the sixth. The Drive answered back, scoring three times themselves in the bottom half to trim the lead back to one. Newcomer Wellington Diaz (1-0) gave up the three Drive runs in the sixth but settled in after that during his South Atlantic debut to pick up the win in relief. Starter Luis Gil struggled with command at times, but still racked up the punchouts, fanning nine over 4 2/3 frames of two-run ball. The 20-year- old right-hander was charged with one earned run and walked four while recording at least eight strikeouts for a third consecutive start. Aaron McGarity allowed the winning run to get to the plate in the ninth but finished the game with a strikeout of Wren to tie up his second save of the season. Doggie Bites Winning is Fun: After a Friday night win over the Drive, the Dogs are now riding a five-game winning streak, the Charleston clubs longest stretch of victories since winning six in a row from April 22-29 during the 2016 season. Over the dominant stretch, the Holy City has outscored their opponents 26-12 going back to Sunday’s homestand finale victory against Columbia, including a pair of shutout wins. The RiverDogs have not won seven in a row since an eight-game winning streak during the 2015 season (8/16-8/23). Cool Story, Breaux: Catcher Josh Breaux continued his tear on Friday night in Greenville, ripping his third home run in the last four days following his first career two-longball game on Tuesday in Kannapolis. The Tomball, TX native now ranks 4th in the SAL with 22 RBI and has driven in 15 runs in his last 7 games alone, a stretch where the second-rounder is hitting a blistering .419 (13-for-31) with four homers over that span. Wilkerman Garcia, Red Sox Killer: Charleston infielder Wilkerman Garcia continued to look comfortable within the Fenway Park replica of Greenville, touching off for his fourth career home run at Fluor Field on Friday night, his first of the 2019 campaign. Spending all last season with the RiverDogs, Garcia crushed 4 of his 6 home runs against Charlestons Red Sox rivals, including three all at Fluor Field. The Venezuela native enjoyed his first career multi-HR game on April 28 and added a grand slam on June 8 in the Upstate. Breaking out the Bats: Charleston’s lineup continued to show a marked improvement on Friday with 6 of 9 RiverDogs collecting hits. The RiverDogs offense is now batting .290 (42-145) on the current road trip, including 11 extra-base hits. After returning Thursday from the 7-Day IL, OF Josh Stowers picked up right where he left off, going 3-for-7, including a pair of doubles to extend his hitting streak to a RiverDogs-high 9 games in a row; the Louisville product is hitting .412 (14-34) with 5 BB over that span. OF Canaan Smith also extended his hitting streak to 8 straight games with a knock on Friday; the 20-year- old now owns a .393 (11-for-28) average in that span. Since ranking as one of the lowest five scoring team in the SAL circuit in April (3.7 runs/gm), Charleston has scored at least four in each of their first three May contests, averaging 4.3/gm. Swing and Miss Stuff: Charleston’s dominant staff enters play leading the South Atlantic League with 296 strikeouts (10.9 K/9) after Luis Gil and company combined to whiff 14 on Friday in Greenville. The RiverDogs’ swing-and-miss staff has racked up double-digit strikeouts in 17 of their last 22 contests. Gil leads the Dogs with 35 strikeouts on the season and has fanned at least 8 batters in each of his last three starts. Rotation, Rotation, Rotation: Despite all the occasional offensive struggles to start the 2019 campaign, the RiverDogs’ six-man rotation has held up its end so far this season. While Charleston’s staff ERA ranks just 8 th in the league, the starting staff has produced a 2.87 ERA that is 5 th in the SAL circuit; if you remove Luis’ Medina’s forgettable first start in which he allowed 10 runs in two innings, that starters’ ERA drops to 2.22, which would rank as the best starting rotation in the league. On the contrary, Charleston’s bullpen has struggled to start the year, producing a 4.71 ERA that is the second-highest in the league, lower than only Asheville’s. Pinstriped Prospects: The RiverDogs will again tap into a deep farm system in the New York Yankees. Losing some of their organizational talent due to promotions and trades in the last year, the Yankees’ farm system fell from the second-best system in the game to 20 th on the Baseball America rankings heading into 2019. Despite this, the Bronx Bombers are stocked with intriguing talent at the lower levels of the farm system, including seven of the Yanks’ pre- season Top-30 prospects set to open the season with the RiverDogs (MLB.com/BA): RHP Roansy Contreras (10/7), RHP Luis Medina (14/11), RHP Luis Gil (13/25), C Josh Breaux (15/30), RHP Matt Sauer (17/10), OF Josh Stowers (25/--), and RHP Tanner Myatt (29/--). 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E CHS 0 1 0 0 2 3 0 1 0 7 8 1 GVL 1 0 0 1 0 3 0 0 0 5 9 1 Charleston RiverDogs Game Notes Game 29 Charleston RiverDogs (15-13) vs. Greenville Drive (11-16) Fluor Field, Greenville, S.C. 7:05 p.m. Saturday, May 4, 2019 RHP Alexander Vizcaino (2-1, 2.95) Today’s Starters RHP Yasel Santana (0-2, 6.23) South Atlantic League 2019 First-Half Standings Northern Division W L GB Delmarva (Orioles) 21 4 - Hickory (Rangers) 19 8 3.0 West Virginia (Mariners) 17 9 4.5 Greensboro (Pirates) 17 10 5.0 Hagerstown (Nationals) 12 16 10.5 Kannapolis (White Sox) 11 15 10.5 Lakewood (Phillies) 9 19 13.5 Southern Division W L GB Augusta (Giants) 14 12 - Charleston (Yankees) 15 13 - Lexington (Royals) 13 14 1.5 Greenville (Red Sox) 11 16 3.5 Rome (Braves) 11 16 3.5 Asheville (Rockies) 10 17 4.5 Columbia (Mets) 8 19 6.5 RiverDogs Quick Stats 1 st Half Record: 15-13 2 nd Half Record: 0-0 Road Record: 9-5 Home Record: 6-8 Current Streak: W5 Current Road Streak: W5 Current Home Streak: W1 This Road Trip: 4-0 Last Homestand: 3-4 Last Five: 5-0 Last Ten: 7-3 Team AVG (rank): .232 (8th) Team HR (rank): 19 (T4th) Runs Scored: 108 (6th) Team ERA (rank): 3.72 (8th) Team K (rank): 296 (1st) Team SV (rank): 9 (2nd) 2019 vs. GVL: 3-1 Upcoming Matchups (subject to change) --- Listen to the RiverDogs on 1250 WTMA and online at www.riverdogs.com.
