Crew Launch Vehicle (CLV)Upper Stage
Avionics & SoftwareAcquisition Planning
Baseline Approach - NASA leads Avionics System requirements, specification, architecture, and component specification development. NASA performs risk reduction for critical design areas. NASA maintains design lead role. Avionics Prime Contractor procures, integrates, and tests the Integrated Upper Stage Avionics System and transitions into production/flight phase.
NASA Team in-house development of Element Requirements Document (ERD), interface requirements documents, Avionics and Software System Specification, and Architecture, Component and Software Specifications, Upper Stage Avionics Design Definition Document
NASA performs risk reduction responsibilities for critical Avionics design decisions Avionics Prime Contractor is brought on, through competition, four months prior to US PDR, which provides an
opportunity for collaboration on the component and software specifications. NASA leads the PDR. The NASA Team maintains the overall responsibility for design while the Avionics Prime Contractor provides an
integrated solution for procuring (or building), accepting, electrically integrating, and testing the Upper Stage Avionics System. Post DDT&E, the Avionics Prime Contractor transitions into production/flight phase.
NASA maintains lead for Flight Software Development and a planned transitions to the Avionics Prime Contractor prior to the first CLV Test Flight. NASA will augment their software workforce.
The Avionics Prime Contractor procures, electrically integrates, and tests Upper Stage Avionics System for MPTA and Upper Stage System Level Test (such as Green-runs) and all Flights within the period of performance of the contract. NASA transitions into traditional insight role. The Avionics Prime Contractor supports mechanical integration at MPTA.
Upper Stage Prime delivers Instrument Unit Structure and the Avionics Prime Contractor performs mechanical integration of Avionics at MAF.
The Avionics Prime Contractor procures, electrically integrates, and tests Upper Stage EGSE for Systems Integration Laboratory (SIL), MAF, any required for Launch Processing
Options: Development Flight Instrumentation remains in-house NASA DDT&E
Baseline Approach - Upper Stage Office is delegated responsibility from Vehicle Integration Office for CLV Stack (Element to Element) Electrical Integration and Verification
NASA team with augmented workforce develops verification plans, procedures, and performs electrical integration and verification
