Thisleadsmetomylastarticleonthesubject,IsHistoryontheWayOutoftheSchoolsandDoHistoriansCare?(SocialEducation,May1969).Iarguedthatmostobserversonthecollegeandpre-collegelevelsagreedthathistorycourseswereultimatelyuntenablebutwouldprobablysurvive,foralltheworstreasons,untilbettercoursesweredevised.Theyalsonotedthatsuchcoursesrequiredcontinuouscooperationbetweeneducationistsandhistorians,andthatrote-learningmustbereplacedbyinquiry-anddiscovery-learning.WhatImeantbythiskindoflearningisrichlydisplayedinmyradicallyinnovativetextbook,CharlesG.Sellers,SeniorAuthor,HenryMayer,EdwardL.Paynter,AlexanderSaxton,NeilL.Shumsky,andKentSmith,AsItHappened:AHistoryoftheUnitedStates(McGrawHill,1975).Thenatureofthisbookisindicatedonpagexi:
