Asst (Fin & Mgt), we were sorry that Caroline Hare (Admin Asst - Mission & Ministry) has

now left her role with us – for entirely personal reasons, which have come about only since

starting here. We are working on some measures to help us continue all the administration work but, yet

again (sorry!), do bear with Sam and I as we try to juggle answering the phone and door alongside the other

work. Juggling will be a part of the new Person Specification in future job descriptions! Thank you.

our congregations, but such services can be very difficult to prepare and lead. Here on our website you will find

Advent and Stewardship Resources We are currently working on lists of resources for Advent and Christmas and on 9th Oct at 12.30-2pm in the

Diocesan Office (bring your own lunch!) we have our CMD gathering to share ideas. In advance of that, if you

have any suggestions to add to the list being created, please do get in touch with Annie at the office. She is also

working on a similar list for Stewardship – again contact her if you can recommend any books, material, courses,

Pioneer Ministry: A New Chapter - 26th Oct. Facilitated by 5 Church of Scotland Pioneers, this day conference will explore their

experiences of building relationships with un-churched folk, offering reflections and

learning for us all as we seek to engage people beyond our congregations. Come and

be challenged and inspired to think how we can reach out with God's love in new

ways as we hear from their work in such diverse contexts such as with students, within the Visual Arts

Community, in the rural community, in an area of New Housing and in an area of significant deprivation. On

Edinburgh Street Pastors Training – 18-20 Oct. and 15-17 Nov. Street Pastors in Edinburgh are teams of women and men on the streets of

our city every Friday between about 10pm-4am helping anyone in need, whilst others

stay in the background in vital roles of prayer and support. They are all trained

volunteers from local churches who care about our community. For real life

stories and insight into this ministry visit their Facebook page here. Could you or

someone in your church get involved? The next training evenings will be on two

weekends 18-20 October and 15-17 November. If you're interested in finding out more about what the Street

Are you aware that Christians in Sport produce quality resources

to help churches engage with the world of sport? With the Rugby World

Cup on at the moment, their pack currently includes material to help you

This Workshop will offer support and tools to enhance confidence in having pastoral conversations about death and dying. Using a model from the field of bereavement to explore emotional, psychological and spiritual responses and building on the experiences of the participants, the day will resource those who attend to go deeper in their pastoral encounters with people who are actively addressing their own mortality. The day will be facilitated by the Rev Canon Dr Marion Chatterley. Marion currently works as a hospice chaplain and has many years’ experience of journeying both people who are dying and those who seek to support them. The programme assumes a degree of personal sharing and therefore participation is restricted to clergy and others in authorised ministries within churches.

Right Use of Power Saturday 23 November: 1.30 - 4pm at St Columba's by the Castle, Edinburgh

Power is the ability to influence and be influenced by others. Power is relational, and relationships can be messy. Good intentions are essential, but not enough to ensure we use our power well; we make mistakes, or even under-use the appropriate power we

have to effect change. Most misuses of power happen when those who have influence due to their roles misjudge the impact on others; limited knowledge of power dynamics can leave us adrift. Using material from psychotherapist Dr Cedar Barstow this event explores how we can relate positively to power with reflection, sensitivity and heart, and offer reparation when difficulties occur. For faith leaders and teachers, pastoral care teams, counsellors, spiritual accompaniers etc. Suitable as a CPD/CMD event, certificates are available on request. Facilitated by Elizabeth White, a spiritual director and senior accredited pastoral supervisor. Having formerly coordinated the adult learning programme for the Diocese of Edinburgh, she now offers group and individual opportunities for spiritual reflection on life and work.

At Safe Families we believe that every child deserves to be loved and thrive, but when circumstances cause

them to suffer, they can often feel alone and isolated. Throughout history the Church have often

responded with love and compassion and they have been the hands and feet of Jesus to offer love, hope

and mercy to the poor and the marginalised.

So many people are disconnected from their local church and wouldn’t necessarily turn to it in a time of

crisis. At Safe Families for Children we connect local volunteers from the church to get alongside families

who are in crisis and who need a helping hand.

Safe Families currently works with 834 Churches in the UK, 34 Local Authorities and we have over 4,000

trained volunteers.

Our vision is for the local church to become known as centres of compassion and hope for families

desperate for help. We are doing this all over the UK by letting people know God cares for them and

by mobilising the Church in their local community in a real and relevant way.

The Local Authorities in Edinburgh and the Lothians refer families to us who need our support for all sorts

of reasons. We then assess every referral and see if the referral is appropriate. Our staff then

match trained volunteers to families and continue to oversee the case offering support to the family and

the volunteer. Volunteers who apply to Safe Families receive initial and ongoing training and will be

assessed for suitability. This will include a PVG check and references.

We don’t expect our volunteers to have any specialised skills other than a compassionate heart. These

amazing people simply have a desire to help someone who are struggling. Sometimes the referral is for

a child under 12 and sometimes it is for a parent. In some cases, it might require volunteers to help both a

parent and family. The support offered is very practical and relational.

The scripture reminds us of the promise that by our good works they will glorify our Heavenly

Father. Our desire is to improve the situation for families and re-establish hope often in a hopeless

situation and connect them to community, often this community is our own Church.

So, the practical steps of getting involved are simple. Safe Families will usually do a talk at a Church Service

and invite volunteers to apply online. Volunteers will be asked to provide three references and will

complete a PVG form. Once they have attended training, they will have a one to one assessment with a

Safe Families for Children staff member and then they work with us on assignments of their choice.

Safe Families has made huge steps over the last few years to bring hope back in to so many situations. It is

a great way for the local church to show love and compassion in their local community as Christ taught us

Murrayfield Churches Together Faith Discussion GroupThe Faith Discussion Group considers different topics to do with faith to try better to understand what faith is and how it affects us both as individuals and as a community. All arewelcome to our meetings, including doubters and sceptics.

Before Christmas, meetings will be on Tuesday evenings, from 8th October to 26th November in the Upper Room at Saughtonhall United Reformed Church 85/87 Saughtonhall Drive, Edinburgh EH12 5TR.

Last session the group became a book club and spent eight weeks reading through half of the New Testament with lively discussions following the readings each week.

This autumn, we will read the rest of it. The Community BibleExperience has taken the New International Version translation ofthe bible and re-ordered and reformatted it. Since this version also has no chapter or verse numbers, it reads like a normal book. So,having read Luke, Acts, and the Pauline letters, we move on toMatthew’s gospel and the rest of the New Testament books.

Reading the Bible a whole book at a time has proved to be anenlightening experience, even for regular bible readers. It is notnecessary to have been with us for the first half to join for thesecond half. Or, if you can't make it on a Tuesday evening, whynot travel with us and just follow the readings at home?

We can obtain copies of this edition of the New Testament for youat £5; just let us know. So, if you have always meant to work yourway through the New Testament now is your chance. We read around 30 pages per week.
